What an absolutely fabulous apartment and a stellar Art collection (made my mouth water). If I were to visit, I would be completely absorbed by the Art, happy as a clam... for hours. Beautifully put together and with a clear vision. It's great when the art does so much of the heavy lifting visually. Even if I i couldn't live in an all white house it really works because of the art. Thanks for showing it all of us and ignore the couple of sour people.
What a fabulous apartment. We're all about the mid-century modern era and have many pieces in our pad. I was a picker for years down here in South Florida and with a gallery downtown Delray Beach for years, so I was able to get some great pieces at bargain rates, which fit in our budget. I picked up a beautifully framed original Rosette Bakish multimedia piece for 30 bucks at a garage sale, which is a focal point in our living room. We have a wonderful store we go to in Wilton Manors called DECADES, which has 90% original mid-century modern era furniture and decorative items and we have purchased quite a few things there. These two retired dudes on a budget could never afford to live in NYC, or pay premium prices for pieces, but we've done okay and love our little 2/2 condo on the water in Delray Beach. Anyway, this was wonderful.
@@fodorr I believe that I am about your age, so I grew up with a sort of blend of some more "traditional," some mid-century, and some mid-century modern (I think most people in my area grew up with some new and some hand-me-down family furniture.) The important thing, I think, is that it all "go together" in some sort of unifying, cohesive way or at least be grouped together by type in dedicated rooms. Today's fads are just seem cold and artless to me.
I love the danish and mid-century furnitures. I’m also a big fan of Danish furniture for their teak woods and simple and timeless designs. I’ve had mine for over 30 years and I still love them like I first had them.
Love everything about this apartment. Such a great job! Love the Adler piece, it really vibes and is a conversation piece. What is that gorgeous click in your kitchen?? Want! ❤❤❤
The original “icebox” before refrigerators..it’s where milk/dairy were placed. We need to strip it so that it closes properly, but we intend to keep it!
I remember a friend had that same stove in his Bronx apartment early 80's, I thought it was retro cool even back then. Royal Rose was the brand, it is beautiful...please restore it if it breaks but i doubt it will, it's a tank. i remember you had to light the oven with a match, very cool "whooomp" sound when it ignited!! Cheers!
Big fan of Alexander Girard and those dolls are awesome all gathered together. I noticed the Girard designs throughout the home and it brought me a big smile. I dig that emerald green Eames bent wood chair. I collect mid-century modernist work. I grew up around it in the 1960's and my dad knew many of the greats of the design period personally and growing up our house was filled with their works. My father was a design director for four major design firms in his career. He had the design greats early stuff starting in the late 1940's through 1960's. I'm a retired graphic designer and now a painter and I like what you have curated in the space.
Wow, at first I felt overwhelmed with all of the "stuff" but I gave it a chance. Towards the end of the video I was won over. It's a colorful home, for sure, but it's also warm and comfy... as long as things stay in their place. A Post-It note out of place would constitute a mess.
I really try to emulate my favorite designer, Alexander Girard with his use of texture, graphic design and color. Thank you for giving it a try and liking it in the process.
Hello Robert … lovely home with room to walk around in … some people tend to clutter every inch of the space and make it look more like a shop as opposed to a home … and I have to add that you my friend are just as handsome as can be !!!!! A true DILF !!!!
Hahaha, we closed them and sold the contents except for items which we really really loved and would never part with..and that’s what’s in the apartment now.
Love the apartment. One thing I would point out though is the interior window frames. The brown finish replacement window frames stand out. In our co-op in Gramercy we spray painted the frames with white auto paint, three coats, (windows were covered over for this). There are also companies that specialize in painting interior window frames in NYC with special durable paint.
Excellent idea! Windows are a touchy subject in our building, but I believe we can paint the interiors without issues. We actually need to replace all the windows in the apartment..quote already out for them!
I agree with you on the dad advice, like you say, IF he wasn’t aware of the real man she was going back to. I think it’s great advice, IF!! This family though, omg! OMG!! It just never ends, the nightmare! I’m so glad we’re almost done! The kennedys truly disturb me. My god this was rough to get through. I’ll grant it this though; it’s more interesting and scandalous than anything I could have imagined! Wow!!
Smartly, all the furniture in the living room is up off the floor, which makes it look less blocky. This gives the small room a larger feel, because you can see the sweep of the floor extending underneath the pieces. You can see this in the opening shots and also around 5:00. Even though this is a hallmark of midcentury design, I suspect it was a conscious choice.
The view from the window indicates this apartment is next to the Columbia medical center, which ia WAY uptown--not downtown as shown in the establishing shots. It would've been nice to get a shot of the building in its neighborhood context.
Hi there, yes, we live uptown, Roy. The other shots were just meant as stock footage of New York City, where the footage was shot. Manhattan doesn't end at 110th Street..haha!
@@fodorr Exactly. Which is why it would be good to see uptown'. There are some beautiful streets, parks, and buildings there. If shown, they'd put your apartment in its environment and broaden its appeal.
If you've ever seen the movie, the decor in the apartment is an exact diamond shape pendant light. She updates the interiors to be classic mid-century. Believe me, I've studied the movie..haha. And I know The Dakota isn't Art Deco, but those light fixtures are a modern take on Art Deco.
@@fodorr Okay, I get that the light fixture is a modern take on art deco, and I have seen the movie but not recently, however you do say that you love the fact that "they're in an art deco pre-war apartment house".
