Great video. I have never seen this kind of squash. I like the fact that your family has passed these heirloom seeds down. The squash look amazing especially after you took them out of the canner. Enjoy 😊
Hey Mud! Glad to see you won the wrestling match with your squash! Great video! We were blessed with a lot of the tan butternut squash this year and need to can them. Love squash but never canned it before. Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe you'll have a drawing for someone to win some seeds! Sign me up! I've also saved a ton of seeds from my garden this year. First time saving seeds as well as starting my seedlings last spring.
Great video, I find it very satisfying to clean the guts of pumpkins, while saving the seeds. I have not seen squash like yours though. HUGE! I will look for some next growing season. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Happy Canning!
How did I not know you had your own UA-cam?! I'm a member of Leisa's group. Those look wonderful. Would love to grow some. If I beg, would you sell me a dozen? ROFL!!!!! Also you have a wonderful voice.
Dude! I've been subbed to you for like 10 years & I've never seen ur face. You look so huggable. Have some cyber granny hugs. 👵🤗❤ I grew up on a farm & my mom canned everything, made wine & pickles & jam n stuff. Cast iron cookware rocks!
It does seem faster the second time around :) Those squash look yummy! Would you compare it to a kabocha squash? They look similar but yours are much bigger! Maybe Ill try canning squash for the first time! Thanks for sharing Mud :)
My son works for a farmer who grows kabocha, mostly for his wife's 2 restaurants. Good stuff! She's a Thai chef & the sauce recipe for noodles & chicken is a thing of beauty. 😊
@@TheWhimsicalMimzy aww man, I beg the lady at my Thai place for her recipes with no luck. Her Tom khan and pad Thai is beyond delicious and I can’t seem to replicate them despite many tries. Even have galangal and lemon grass growing in the yard.
Hey Mudbrooker, your channel is great. Been watching ever since I bought a pressure cooker last year and stumbled upon your videos totally by accident while searching for a "how to use your pressure cooker" videos. Besides the great information you provide there is something very relaxing about your videos. it's like those ASMR videos but not stupid. have you ever considered having some low volume jazz or classical music playing in the background when you make your videos? you say the most important ingredient in any recipe is alcohol and I for sure can't argue with a good beer- but you need music while you're cooking brother!
How much are your seeds! I’m wondering how they would grow in south Dakota zone 4? I’d like to try them here on the prairie. By the way your cast iron collection bets mine! ;-)
I been saving seeds on all kinds of squash and tomatoes and peppers well any kind of vegetables and I put them in paper bag and I put them in a plastic container with moisture packet to keep them safe
Hey Brooker! A trick I learned from a seed farm is to leave the seeds to sit in the water for 3 days. Bacteria will grow, ferment, and break down any additional pulp and make it easier to separate the seeds from the pulp. This is especially helpful for tomato seeds, but should work for squash too. However, after doing this, you have to dry the seeds for at least 2 weeks (4 preferably) to make sure they don't go moldy when putting away for storage.
I never had to do that with squash or any other vegetables But tomatoes they are the only one that works with and I been saving seeds for over 30 year's and I have a great growing rate...
I cooked a butternut squash in my microwave for 15 minutes or more and then I cut it and take the seeds out. I dumped the inside with the seeds around my rhubarb and would you believe they grew. I have many butternut squash. So doing the squash this way will be ok. I heard its not good to can it. I watched half acre homestead and I think she did hers mashed and lots of liquid in it. I would like to can some, but concerned. I have hubbard squash and would like to do that with it. Actually I planted in containers and surprised they grew and actually vined up my peach tree I planted from seed. Its about 6-8 inches in diameter in the tree. I think the vine is dying because of fall.
Can it in chunks and puree it when you use it, pureed squash and pumpkin won't process all the way through and aren't safe to can. Also, I just learned that the USDA no longer recommends canning summer squash and zucchini but winter squash (Acorn, Butternut, Buttercup, Hubbard to name a few) and pumpkin are still OK.
Hi Mud and Milo. Maybe Wed. could give me a little history or explain the art of canning. Is it the same as making preserved jam or tomato suace from scratch. Thanks

Seeds passed down 50 years! Am I the only one impressed by this!?

What kinds of recipes will you make with your squash? Will you use these in soups and stews or purée them up as a soup?
I was just going to ask the same question
Eating squash is great for weight loss too! Thanks again for a great instructional video

They're a buttercup type of squash, but who knows what else they might have cross pollinated with over the decades.

Great video! Thanks.

Could you show us an updated video of the seeds after you dry them on the rack and your storage of them please. Thank you so much 💜
Just scrub in soapy water, because they can be a little slimmie and lay on a mesh rack for several days
That's a good idea.

I will do that.
What clan does that flask go to? I wish our clan had that kind of merch.
Don't know, it came with the whisky.
