- Météo Média and The Weather Network went on the air for the first time on September 1st, 1988. To commemorate it's 10th anniversary, Météo Média aired a retrospective on September 20th, 1998 looking back over its first 10 years. Unfortunately, The Weather Network did not air one of its own. At this point, The Weather Network had just recently moved from Montreal to Toronto (Mississauga), so Météo Média had full use of the Montreal studios. In early 2016, Météo Média moved to the Toronto studios (now in Oakville) letting go of most of its staff. Only a few remain in Montreal providing some content actually filmed in Quebec. This year marks Météo Média's and The Weather Network's 30th anniversary, however, it doesn't look like much will be done to celebrate.
Sorry that the sound is not 100%.
Pretty interesting they referenced the WeatherSTAR system and the shared feed in the early days; I doubt you would hear TWN mentioning that nowadays.
I also noticed at 13:50, judging by the font style that this was an early WS4000 rather than a 3000. I guess it would be a year or two before it was reformatted with actual graphics.
Thanks for sharing this video!
Well, the 4000 started being used in early 1990 south of the border, but it probably wasn't until 1991 when it began to be used here (not universally adopted). Like the 3000 it was text-only based for a while.
Great video to showcase their 10th anniversary. Can't imagine how both the english and french studio staff, shared their time in the same studio 24/7.
WeatherNowTimmins I'm so happy I lived somewhere where I could watch both TWN and MM (which I still do!)! When they both used the desk in the office area you could see MM presenters walking around in the background while TWN used it and TWN presenters when MM used it! MM must have been happy to have all the space to themselves (studio and office areas) when TWN moved to Mississauga!
I remember on Tue Oct 9, 1990, a whole 8 hours of broadcast language mixups. They kept Allison Annesley's mic on, during the 6 minute local forecast at 5h12 PM, listening to her rehears the Marine Conditions report, while hearing a french presenter with a Regional forecast in the background.
I was on the same boat myself, although from New Brunswick where it was an hour later (Moncton in my area I could get both TWN and MM there). I think several months after this clip (when they fully owned it) was when they began to revamp the studio backdrop wise and made changes to it over the course of the years. Nowadays I get regional LFs with TWN covering all New Brunswick and MM covering all of Atlantic Canada (via FibreOp). In any event, great video clip all around :)
September 1st, 2022...The Weather Network / MeteoMedia will be 34 years this year. A salute to Weather Network / MeteoMedia fans, everywhere, for your loyalty and creativity with your emulations.
I was in Montreal in the mid 1990s, visiting a family friend for a few days. Sadly, they did not have MM. That friend asked if I would like to go visit their studio and offices, at 1755 Rene Levesque Blvd. I declined the offer, in fear that A) nobody would allow me inside, upon arrival. And B), I chickened out...for what reason?
Maybe they had over-the-air TV, since it would be channels from stations within the local area and MM was (and still is) a specialty channel, so it wouldn't be included for local OTA. If they had actual cable like Videotron back then, MM would have been included (and just MM in the Montreal East/Montreal Metro area). CF Cable at the time would have carried both TWN/MM on cable.
Also loved the blooper segment they did when things went wrong live. A lot of these were reused in the 20th anniversary, some in the 25th for a while winter wise, and some in the recent 30th they did just now, along with new bloopers.
Brigitte Roussy was the presenter at the beginning of this video clip... by this point (going back to at least 1996 or so), I believe she was the main presenter for the Entretemps week-end show.
The good ol' days! Thankfully some of us recorded TWN and MM to preserve the memories!
@@mikeyBegood Without a doubt, despite what happened recently with TWN/MM when they had a cybersecurity attack last week, meaning the data went out...
Even back in the good ol' days, we were prone to data going out or missing every now and then depending on where people lived, sometimes going into standby mode if there were technical issues with classical music (and then later on the 2006 local forecast music on loop).
But back then, yeah presenters had more on-air time compared to now.
If they do anything for their 30th anniversary, they may play classic local forecast tunes on both channels like TWN did (not MM however) for their 25th anniversary, but have them use songs that were played during the 30 year timeframe (1988 to today). We'll have to see how management will play out on this though...
Graig Mellon I didn't realize they did that with the local forecasts 5 years ago for their 25th anniversary. I remember TWN had showed a number of old clips and "bloopers" for their 20th anniversary and even had a 20 in the logo. I hope they do something to commemorate their 30th. There aren't many presenters left from the old days... even from 10 years ago!
Yeah, MM still has Patrick, Rejean, and Gisele, all of them have been on pretty much since sign on (or close to it), and Chris St. Clair is still the only Montreal presenter from TWN left.
Graig Mellon I'm glad Rejean, Patrick and Giselle are still on MM. Still enjoy watching them!
When the STAR4000 started, in 1992, I visited Ottawa and remember at :05, :20, :35 and :50 past the hour, MM showed templates for Regional forecasts. Is this true?
WeatherNowTimmins I can't tell you, I really only got interested in TWN and MM in mid 1993, but never really paid much attention to the timing of the segments.
