Thank you sooo sooo much for this! I just found out my vocal type, after 26 years of STRUGGLE, and it makes so much sense. It was such a relief to come across this video as I'm doing research on how to better tune my voice. I sincerely appreciate you.
I am new to singing, and not really sure what I am and what I can do, but contralto fit the best for me, and this comfirmed it. I was surprised that the high notes ended just when they needed to, and the low ones started just where it feels right!
i was always told i was a soprano, but intuitively i knew that was wrong. Even tho i "can" hit a higher register, and sound decent when I do, I find that my lower register feels more comfortable and resonant for me. Since scouring utube for exercises, i done found out im more contralto and i LOVE it here.
Absolutely perfect! I just found out that I've been mislabeled an alto for all this time, and this is the perfect warm up I've been looking for! Thank you so much and I hope to see more content about contraltos and how to harness our voices better.
I have to tell you, this is almost perfect for what my voice can do, but even this goes higher than I can reach. The tail end of each exercise, the final notes I definitely cannot get out without my voice cracking - I hit the wall a full octave beforehand, and in the case of the mixed voice exercise, I hit my limit two octaves before. The rest of it works beautifully for me, though. I probably just need to work more on my upper range. LOL. Thanks so much for posting this. Even two years later, it's still helpful, and very much appreciated.
Purple Plus Yeah that happens so often! It’s why there’s rarely ever any contralto songs and roles in music. The only reason I know i’m a contralto is because I’ve been hitting B2’s since I was 13.
This has really been a great find for me. It lasts about the duration of my car trip from my house to the gym, so I can get extra practices in. My chords feel much more supple than when I started 3 weeks ago, & my range is beginning to return to normal. Thank you so much! People sometimes forget about the contraltos! :-)
The lowest sounds in the range of a given voice that can be sounded. For the bass (with the exception of octavists and other cases), Db2-D2 are typical, for a baritone - F2-F#2, for a tenor - G#2-A2. The same notes are typical for female voices, but correspondingly by an octave higher. The lowest sounds in most cases are already a powerful argument in determining the type of voice.
Thank you! This is so much easier to follow a male instructor! I too just found out my voice type and why I've been singing male vocals for 35 years but thinking it was incorrect would always try to sing higher and like a female when singing in front of people and it was just wrong LOL
@@THEVOCALLEXICON it did! Especially the middle voice part! I have this issue with the A4 where it feels like a tug of war between my chest and head if the song is on a sustained A vowel! I believe I've been trying to take chest up too high. I thought it first my middle voice started at G4 because that note feels like a mixed note if I put my hand on my chest and on the side of my face I could feel it blending very good but the A is another story! I think my middle voice starts at an F sharp and my head should be dominating by the a flat which is in line with the registration outline on another site that was discussing training "confused contraltos" and how we are often put on the wrong vocal parts and it messes us up for years which is exactly what happened I can actually drop down as low as an E2 because when I play my bass guitar and I'm humming along trying to learn a song I was singing that Low!! but that's more of a vocal fry note but I've got a pretty decent G2 but my go-to " default" note is always the B-flat 2 which may have been influenced by my father's constant tenor sax playing pretty much since I was born! So once I started learning about my voice type and before I started accessing more notes on the lower and upper end my natural range seems to be B-flat 2 F sharp 5-identical to a tenor saxophone! I've been a little upset though that my father never noticed this I do remember him mentioning I had an alto voice years ago but never elaborated on it. I also found out that he became an instrumentalist because he thought his voice wasn't any good and apparently he is a basso profundo the lowest male voice so figures I'm a contralto and I believe I'm the dramatic type because not only is my voice low but it is ridiculously overpowered and loud and strong and metallic like you said in another video which is probably exactly what led me to sing songs sung by heavy metal male vocalists LOL maybe my father didn't notice how low my voice was because of how low his voice is most likely. Currently my range is extending from G2 up to A5
The high ends of the scales are quite hard for me to reach, and the low ends aren't even close to what I can sing. Contralto is THE lowest female voice? Or are the range of these warm ups not the entiee range of a contralto singer?
I feel you. I feel like a high baritone to a mezzo soprano but no one ever believes me. I can walk up behind someone with a deep male voice and scare the crap out of them and then sing Whitney Houston, not good though, lol.
You are correct. This is an awesome warm up, but not exactly within contralto range in terms of the low end. The high end is probably possible with practice, but trying switching to "E's" when you can no longer match pitch. Eventually the syllables he uses at the top will come. For your low end, actually look for a tenor warmup. It's difficult for men to reconcile just how low a true contralto can go. Hope this helps.
@@88cynthiak88 Thanks for posting that suggestions. The upper ends of this warmup actually leave my throat hurting to try. The E's help a little bit, but I totally feel like I'm hitting the limits of both head and mixed voice at least an octave before the exercises end (and actually the mixed voice exercise, I ran into my limit two octaves before the end), and these exercises are definitely not starting quite at the bottom of my range. I probably just need to work more on my upper range, but at least right now, it definitely feels like I'm trying to do something my voice isn't able to do way up there. LOL

Thanks a lot for sharing. I don't mean to ask a redundant question, but what are the warm up scales being used? I know you said that you started at E3. Do you progress by half or whole steps? I'm learning by ear. I just wanted clarification. I would do half steps though.
You are welcome. Its mostly a whole step progression. For the first one the notes in the scale are do re mi re so fa mi re From 4:21 I started using do so mi do so mi do which is more than a whole step movement. Hope this helps.

In this video it actually goes from an E3 to a G5. A vocal range for a bass is classified as an E2-E4, and soprano range is classified as C4-C6, with coloratura sopranos being anything higher than that. Nobody needs to be boxed into one vocal range though! Many people have a voice that overlaps through many ranges. I, myself, can sing in the contralto range through the coloratura range, but consider myself a Mezzo-Soprano since that is where I feel the most comfortable singing.

Why is it so hard to find help for controalto's?
sasha rain right! it’s always about doing high notes for many people but what about the low notes?
It’s because contraltos are so rare, not too many people understand how to work with them and they end up being diagnosed as mezzo-sopranos.
