I started working out with a personal trainer 3X a week about 10 months ago. Exercise has done more for my mental health than any antidepressant or therapy sessions could ever do. I am amazed at the reduction in my anxiety. Also, my concentration is on point. My mind is clear and much more sharp. I know that it’s hard to get started, but there is no going back once you reap the benefits. I feel amazing!
Indeed. So glad she makes these videos. She is in a profession with a shortage of professionals, since Covid. So, this information is very much appreciated.❤
Exactly. I wish I knew this earlier. I spent years in pain, mostly sitting in various chairs (work+gaming). Now I've been working out more or less consistently for a few years, and there are no words to describe the difference in how my body feels. Night and day is a massive understatement.
I think of it as an investment. Something you are buying into that you don't see the benefits right away. That's not always true, but it is if you're someone who goes all out for a workout instead of starting out reasonable.
I thought about this recently. I have been working out regularly for around ten years. Cardio makes me feel clear-minded and content. Lifting weights gives me calm confidence. If I don't exercise for a while, I get a little cranky.
i watched my husband transform his emotional regulation, while also building muscle so that he has now been his target weight for years. He did quantities of pushups and crunches, burpees and whatnot. No gym, it was the pandemic era.
Younger people take note: I am 71 and have been dealing with Parkinson’s disease for nearly 15 years now. Exercise is the number ONE prescription for slowing the progression of this incurable disease. I can’t imagine what my life would be like had I not had a consistent cardio/resistance training program beginning in my early twenties. You never know when being in shape, and having the ability to stay in shape, will save your life. Side note: Parkinson’s is known to be triggered by exposure to toxins. So ladies - quit bathing your scalp in hair dye. And everyone should wear gloves when using household cleaners, solvents, whatever. Be safe
Its important to combine both cardio and strength training. I run regularly and do a little cycling and find I'm less prone to injury since doing strength training regularly. I find both forms of exercise great for mental health.
@@DrTraceyMarks Doc, please, inform people about the dangers of taking steroids. I just learned about a 27 year-old guy with several heart problems. He have been taking steroids since he was 22. That's really really scary.
@@DrTraceyMarks could you do a research + video please about why thres only a NDRI but no SDRI 🙏? And how dopamine effects us on its ow meaing without norepineprine? Dr. Tracey is God sent. Your analysis is so perfect 🥰 Thank you. I have been suffering from constant burning akin cursed from physical anxiety depression, but ever since i returned back to gym, the symptoms has reduces to %70 under 2 months of strength exercise. Depression is a very bad condition 😞 God will see everyone that's going through this.
First time watching this Dr video. Great information. 62yrs old. 3 days of HIIT cardio and 3-4 days of high intensity weight training a week are my go to therapist.
I cycle for my transportation and I lift weights to injury proof myself for my job (I'm a caregiver), and in my limited anecdotal experience, you are absolutely spot on regarding which benefits each mode of training provides. I describe it to people like when I do cardio, my mood will lift, whereas when I do strength training, I may not be euphoric, but it's harder to get me down. Nice to see how it goes down precisely.
Your advice is exceptional and accurate. Physical activity has always been a part of my life. I’m 77. I’ve been training with weights since I was about 12. I played varsity lacrosse in high school and college. At 69, I took the MENSA admission test and was admitted. I still practice law. Physical activity is as close as we mortals will ever get to the Fountain of Youth.
I'm now 53. I've been lifting weights for around nine years (thanks for making me lose two years COVID). I'm stronger than I've ever been. Physically and mentally. It has given me resilience and has taught me I can do stuff, and do not need to rely on handouts and a hand up.
Psych medications never helped me much, but consistent near-daily exercise (and improving my gut health) made a night and day difference. Two+ years later, exercise doesn't give me quite the high that it used to, but I still rely on it to feel at least somewhat okay.
I am glad I found your channel, Dr. Marks. I love how you concisely give us great information. I am nearly 73 now and have been working out all of my life (in some form for about 60 years), fine tuning my workout methodology as I have learned what works. Your protocol for experienced exercisers happens to match what I have arrived at nearly exactly. The difference is it has taken me a lot of time to come to it. Two times a week weight training (about an hour and half each session which does include stretching) and three times a week cardio (a total of 150 minutes with 36 minutes of HITT). I also walk once or twice a week relatively briskly from 7 to 10 thousand steps. The walking is more for relaxation than a full-out physical workout. I also have fine tuned my diet and eat mostly whole foods, mostly organic fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains, with fish (mostly salmon and sardines) and occasionally chicken. I make my own protein bars from scratch (easy) and usually have a smoothie daily with assorted nutritional boosting foods. I am not on any 'lifetime meds' so far and hope to keep it that way. Best of luck to all on their health journeys. To me it is not necessarily how long we live but in what kind of health, but consistency and at least a modicum of intensity may very well lead to a longer life as well.
can't wait for the next one 🤩 struggling to stay consistent, executive dysfunction sometimes makes it feel like my life is in control of me instead of the other way around, but I know now that the consistency is what builds the benefits. Time to awaken my inner coach and push myself.
I added strength training to my routine about 3 months ago, and it has really helped my anxiety. Feeling strong and confident makes me feel less stressed, and more in control. And now that I think about it, my sleep has been better, too.
Thank you so much for this video, it was extremely thorough! I’ve been combining cardio and strength training for about a year and a half and it’s been a game changer. I really feel my best when I’m consistent with both types of exercises, especially because I suffer from anxiety.
I am a 62 yr old man. I have been a sub since the beginning. Thank you for all the help you have given me as I went through a horrible divorce. I just wanted to also tell you that you are simply one of the most beautiful women I have ever laid eyes on. :))
Thank you Doctor for this very informative video. I can tell a huge difference in my overall mental health from not engaging in both cardio and strength training for a period of a few months. Back to the gym today.
I don't know why UA-cam recommended you. (Maybe because I do so many Kukuwa Fitness videos.) But I just want to thank them for it 'cause sometimes YT will shake me awake from sleeping on a really good video series. This is one of them. Also, I miss the college days when I went from a size 12 to a size 6 from two months in a weight training class. Those were the days. I still lift 25 lb weights every morning though.
Very interesting, over exercising is a very real problem for some people who use it as medicine. When I was young it was easy to stay active constantly to self medicate. But as I am aging I often lack energy/motivation to do it and injuries can be traumatic and the associated inflammation can lead to more depression.
Thank you for all your hard work, Dr. Marks; you (and by extension the team behind you) deserve every bit of success that comes your way. You've been indispensable in my mental health journey. Keep it up! I wish you well.
Thank you Dr Marks. I've been following for a few years now and your videos are always so helpful. The new series on resilience and brain health is very useful. I especially like that you share the science and practical ways to integrate the information into our lifestyle. May you be abundantly blessed for your work and service❤
Thanks for a concise video and showing that both benefit. I like how you mentioned that there is chance of burn out and injury if we start out too much too soon and that there's no stress ways of doing it
Thank you, Dr. Marks. Interesting point about cardio and memory retention. When I was in graduate school and had to learn German, I'd practice my vocab flash cards while I was on the StairMaster (a cardio machine) in the afternoon. I did this to multitask and save time, but I was always amazed by how well it worked to lodge new info in my brain. It takes some balance because you can't use your hands to prop yourself on the machine.
Thanks! You mentioned it very quickly, but I think it is so important to stress not to overdo exercise, especially strength training. I really ruined my mental health for years only because I trained to much and was somehow paradoxically convinced it would be great for me while at the same time searched under every stone for an explanation why I felt so bad but not saw the obvious answer. Too much exercise, especially strength training is worse than to little I think and it works almost like a mild intoxication of your brain.
This sounds great and I’d love to do this but literally how? I don’t have anywhere near that much time. If I did that for even a single day, who would cook? I’d be up so late doing the dishes that I’d lose sleep
