“Ideological representation” is what we need that’s it that’s all. All skin folk ain’t kinfolk we need more than black/mixed faces in high places. We need substance we need a distinct agenda for Black Americans because right now we’ve constantly got nothing, nothing substantial for our communities.

? Folks. Ya’ll gonna have to throw away a LOT of pivotal black thinkers, scholars, writers, movers and shakers, artists, scientists, leaders, etc from the history of Black Americans in this nation if biracialness is suddenly a no-go. I can understand the African American argument. I am the daughter of Haitian immigrants so while I’m racialized (how others see me) as black/African American, I identify as Black or Haitian American bc there’s a specific difference and history in the experiences of Black Americans who are descendant from the enslaved and have been here a longer time: It’s different.
But after a while, even that gets...confusing bc if my descendants, 5 generations from now, are still
Visibly black and living here, having mixed with black folk who have been here longer or descendant from the enslaved-
Wouldn’t they count as African American? Or no?
Would W.E.B. Du Bois not count, despite the fact he was one of the founding thinkers of Black/African American (Africana) studies and Black theory- bc his parents came from Haiti?
      Would his descendants not count?
Would Malcolm X not, because he was biracial? Even tho he identified as, was racialized as and was visibly black?
Would Frederick Douglass not count as black?
It just gets messy- bc our history here is messy. How do you draw the line- when since the inception of this nation we’ve been brought or have come from all over and eventually are absorbed into the fabric of the black experience whether you want to be or not.
Your experience becoming mine, becoming his, becoming hers, becoming my children’s, becoming theirs?
Colorism is a thing, for sure. Passing privilege- yes. And not having to carry the immediate impact of generations of trauma that is specific to what this nation has done to our communities: black, african American; etc. on your back too if you’re here as an immigrant or only one generation in.
But I’m just trying to understand: how this is a question of her blackness instead of just a conversation of colorism and lightskin privilege. She is not white passing.
I’m not trying to jump on the all skin folk are kin folk train and all of our experiences are the same- bc those are lies and not true but genuinely trying to puzzle out how that gatekeeping could possibly hold up. Genuine thoughts and questions

    • @soulsearcher7077
      @soulsearcher7077 4 роки тому +11

BlahGirl I’m gonna stop you at your second paragraph because you made our point in your argument. You are “racialized” as you said, as black in the U.S. because the way that people perceive you and your image fits (or at least, I’m taking you for your word) the image that is that of the unambiguous black person. Malcolm X and Frederick Douglass were visibly black and that’s why they were treated the way they were in life. If either of them looked like their white parent (for Malcolm, grandparent, it was his mother who was biracial, not him) they would not live the life they had and they wouldn’t be the black icons that they are. Race is not genial. It’s not based on your genotype, it’s based on your phenotype. The only exception to this is the when the one drop rule was legalized and created legal discrimination but that simply does not exist today and the race you are is the one you appear as. No cop is ever gonna pull someone over and ask, “Hey, would you mind educating me a bit on your family history and ethnic makeup so I can decide if I’m going to ticket you or not?” That award winning true story telling series about the r@c!sm those 4 boys faced in NYC? It’s called “When they see us” for a reason. It’s not “When the DNA test results come in” or “When I found out I have a bit of black ancestry”. Kamala Harris is biracial and very much looks so. She is not black and if you think for a second there is no difference between her appearance and an unambiguous blackity black black person, I’m afraid our conversation just has to end here. I’m not going to praise a Kamala for being the first “black woman” to anything when she doesn’t face half of the things that black women do.

The Biden/Harris ticket may not be ideal, but they are going to place competent people in cabinet positions who have interests in improving those departments and not enriching their donors (or even place unqualified donors in charge of the department!). The environment can not take another 4 years of rollbacks of policies that limit emissions. Public schools can not take another four years of Betsy Devos giving money to religious and charter schools. Stephen Miller can not be in charge of immigration policy any more! With Justices Alito and Thomas discussing the validity of marriage equality, we can not allow Trump another opportunity to place another Supreme Court Justice.

Thanks for the video! You slay! Neither candidate is good enough. This has happened election after election. We can't continue this love affair with representation as progress. Even if she was African Amer., what kind of African Amer. would address the broader group, across the nation, present a timeline of ADOS specific sufferings from slavery to the hood and have the nerve to propose the Lift Act, which is specific only to a portion of the middle class? It further complicates already complicated tax codes. Then turn around and say some ish like, "Any policy that will benefit black people will benefit all of society. Let's be clear about that. So, I'm not gone sit here and say I'm gone do something that only benefits black people. No." None in they right mind. Look it up for yourself - Does Kamala Harris support reparations. . . And look, IDC if people don't understand reparations or if they don't believe in repairs. Life changing decisions are being made regardless of what one believes. All you have to do is know that ADOS has a justice claim that is only corrected via reparations. She is standing in front of that, in her fake Timbs and the HBCU banner that she so easily picked up through her Brahmin privilege. We have to get over it, because even if she can't get the BS past people like me, she can definitely get the soros. And what is she going to do for HBCUs? Fill them with H types Visas? Even if she was the first what does it matter to the black community if she isn't going to do anything for us? So, yes. I'm taking that away from her. Not everyone identifies with whatever some people see in her or Michelle Obama. We are playing the long game, here. She ain't it. Look her policy up, forget her collegiate alum status. I appreciate the conversation and the information though.

BlahGirl African American means someone who is descended from Africans who were specifically enslaved in the United States of America.
Africans were enslaved in various regions of the Americas. The corresponding identifier would be Afro-*nationality*. so if you’re descended from enslaved Africans in Jamaica you’re Afro-Jamaican. if you’re descended from enslaved Africans in Brazil you’re Afro-Brazilian. Afro-Colombian, Afro-Dominican, Afro-Trinidadian etc etc etc. obviously people are multi-cultural and can be descended from enslaved Africans in various American countries. But neither side of Kamala’s family is rooted in the U.S.
so although Kamala could identify as black because she has a black parent, her blackness isn’t African American; it’s Jamaican.

And even if Kamala had no "black experience" as a biracial child growing up, she certainly got it real quickly when she stepped on a HBCU campus! She was surrounded by folks that looked like her and dealt with her like one of their own! She even pledged a black sorority, and if her experience is like most in the NPHC, she has life long close friendships with many of these black women from her chapter, who still today remain to be some of her closes confidant! I think it's complicated, because when you take a deeper look into Kamala's record beyond the headlines. Her record should definitely be analyzed and critiqued. There is a lot she did that was about reforming the system such as starting a first of its kind to agency prosecute companies polluting in primarily Black neighborhoods as DA, the first DA to stop prosecuting sex work as a crime and focusing on getting young girls who were trafficked into safe houses, the first DA to embrace re-entry programs and expunge records for those who partake in job training programs. On top of creating a bureau of police accountability in San Francisco that is still used to this day to investigate police misconduct, as attorney general she did open up investigations and prosecute police departments who showed racial bias. Not to mention, when you actually look at the data she rarely ever prosecuted folks for low level drug offenses and if she did it was charged as a misdemeanor in a time where other prosecutors were going for felonie charges. She also weakened the 3 strikes law in California and under her tenure it was never charged unless someone committed a violent crime whereas before folks were getting 25 to life for stealing a soda from the store. Public Defenders have said she was much easier to work with than her predecessors, because she would actually talk to them and try to find solutions that didn't need to result in jail. Could she have done more? Sure. But, in context of the time she was a prosecutor, she was more progressive than majority of her colleagues in the field. Not to mention in the Senate she got legislation passed in the House of Reps that legalize marijuana and expunges records, that call for racial bias training in the health field, and ending cash bail systems. However, those bills have been ignored by Mitch McConnell and not gotten passed the Senate.

I find it quite troubling that people still don't know race from ethnicity. No Kamala is not African American. She is half Afro-Jamaican and half Indian. You cannot erase her blackness just because she's not AA and just because you don't agree with her policies. If the debate didn't show anything else it showed she's indeed a Black woman. I also think we have to get out of the mindset of only wanting to vote for someone that's gonna do solely for the Black community. That is literally NEVER gonna happen, it doesn't even happen in societies that are majority black. I do think we need to pick candidates that have a least a plan or two or our best interest at heart. But we are 13% of the country's population and we clearly see that racism is alive and well, so if there was ever a candidate that only cared about black people (especially African Americans) we know they'd never win and then we'd still be stuck with racist, sexist, bigots as leaders like we have now. We also need to focus on local and state elections because the state has a lot more power than we give them credit for. Having a President that is for us when you live in a red state means NOTHING if the policy can be regulated at a state level.

I agree AA are more an ethnic group rather than a racial group since many if not most AA are actually mixed to a certain extent. But as an African in Africa I am confused. How can someone who is at best 25% Black & 75% something else be considered Black when Black is a classification based on race. Is she also an Indian woman bec she is 50% genetically Indian? Or a White woman since she is not only genetically 25% White but also looks more White than Black. Why can't she just be a mixed race American woman with Indian, African & yes White ancestry? Why does she have to be pigeonholed into a specific racial category when she clearly does not even look like the vast majority of that race?
