basically sakuta "lost" his sister, then developed a really strong bond with her because he wanted to make sure she was happy and comfortable and could achieve all her goals this time round, but then he "lost" her again, believing he hadnt been able to help her see her journey all the way through, its such an abstract concept compared to straight up death, which makes it harder for me to take, fucking devastating lol
Yeah, and the new Kaede was so attached to Sakuta because of the lack of parental figure in her life and with how childish she was I think Sakuta thought of her sister as a daughter too, even if subconsciously. It would be crushing for anyone.

@@tigerwoods3729 Plus, which Kaede was there while he was dealing with his scars and stigma at school?!? Everything Puberty Syndrome that he has experienced was with Kaede 2.0 by his side. His entire life changed with her amnesia happening. Parents - gone. Sister - daughter-fied. Girlfriend - acquired. Fellow students and friends saved from PS by Sakuta - too many to blow many. Hell, maybe Sakuta would not have been able to get those things done without the growth he experienced due to being a dad to Kaede. He lost his "daughter," if you will, whom he will likely never see again, and got his sister, whom was "away" for two years, back.
If you sit and super deep dive into how you feel about the entire season and the movie, you just might feel like you wanna curl up naked in a dark bedroom and scream cry into a pillow, either out of sadness or fear or relief or empathy or overstimulation or confusion or love or worry or elation.
I LOVE how a dumb af sounding title was connected to a work of art that explored emotional, sincere, sensitive parts of life as a teenager and a human.

@@kallistikaleid i went into this show completely blind, the title and promotional art was all i knew, and i 100% thought i was just going to be watching a rom-com, so the very early sci-fi elements were a nice surprise, i could have never predicted all the emotional damage i would end up receiving from the series though, but in the end, after the movie too, i think it has a hopeful message
What killed me was the indifference "old" Kaede expressed towards pandas. Considering how joyous seeing the pandas made "new" Kaede, it crystallized the fact that she was gone forever. Therefore, Sakuta's sister died twice. Add to the fact that his identity for 2 years was his relationship with her, that hole left in his heart must've been gaping. This show took me to a dark place and it's no wonder that Mai is my #1 waifu--and no others will usurp her--and Sakuta is my favorite male character in anime. Dude's a champ.
From a storytelling perspective, it's quite clever with what they did with Kaede. We as the viewer, from the very beginning of the show, only see the new Kaede, so we developed emotional attachment to this character. Then they take her away, so we would feel grief, but since it's a different version of her, they were still able to kill her without throwing her to the way side. Pretty cool imo

In episode 1 when Kaede-chan was introduced, I rolled my eyes when we got yet another "cutesy little sister who loves her older brother a little TOO much type of character". Then episode 12 happens and completely subverts expectations with a well thought out reason on why she loves Sakuta, but not in a sibling sort of love.
To Kaede-chan, she doesn't see Sakuta as her older brother, but as someone who takes care of her despite being a complete mess, hence why she developed feeling for him. Naturally Sakuta can't return those feelings, because he knows that she's his little sister. Insane story arc.
Also literally one of the only people in her entire life.

The Kaede before and after the visit to the Zoo had completely different speech patterns... the pre zoo spoke like a 5th grader talking to her older brother (that includes the cutsey trope of 3rd person speech)... The post zoo kaede spoke like an angsty teen...
I think the important thing to realize here is that both of these identities are still Kaede, so no matter how you slice it, Sakuta is still losing a huge part of someone that he loves dearly
This. And she's never coming back, yet he gets to see her in the form of his sister.
This hits real hard when Sakuta, who mostly had a deadpan attitude, started showing his vulnerable side.
A point to keep track of here, seeing how hurt she was by this, essentially mad at herself for not being able to be there for him.
This is a point to what she said before, how she actually cares about him a lot more than he thinks.
which when you see all the displays of her pragmatism makes a lot of sense, she fully realizes how amazing what he did for her was.
I swear with what happened to him it's like he gives a blood sacrifice to receive "magical advice" from his "senpai" who may or may not be a Demon/Angel. I thought it was crazy the way the scar refreshed in an instant.

This arc si my favorite and the best for me... I like this more that the movie... It just hits different, maybe because I'm a brother too but I really get emotional just thinking of what happen to Kaede..
When Sheera said “her old self will still like pandas and want to go see them” I got it with that sadness again knowing that scene was coming.
If you're looking for some info on written japanese, there's hiragana, katakana, and kanji.
Hiragana and katana are both similar to how letters work in english where they represent just a sound. ひ(hiragana) and ヒ(katakana) are both pronounced as HI (like the word "he" in english) but the meaning of this can be ambiguous since multiple words sound exactly like that.
Kanji is like small pictures that can have multiple ways to pronounce them, but have a set range of meanings, so 日(day) and 火(fire) are also both pronounced as HI when written alone. 日曜日(Sunday) is read as "nichi-you-bi", so that same kanji for day can be read in multiple ways even in the same word.
Because of this, its pretty normal to ask someone how they spell their name. Some things are standard, like any time you hear "Ko" in someone's name such as Hanako, its almost always going to be 子 which means kid or if you hear "kawa/gawa" such as Takegawa, its 川 which means river.

The other thing to think about, as far as his grief goes....yes, he had known the "real" Kaede longer, but he most likely had a much closer, almost parental relationship with the alternate Kaede after her amnesia for two whole years.
episode 13... funny how on this episode instead of Sakuta outside the bathroom consoling the girls, its Makinohara consoling him outside the bath.

Sakuta’s voice actor also played Naofumi in “The Rising of the Shield Hero”. Mai Sakurajima’s voice actress played Raphtalia, also from the same anime

i feel that maybe mai wasn't mad that sakuta won't vent to her but she was mad that she wasn't there when he needed her most
Kaede’s amnesiac persona was kinda like another sister to him and so when she disappeared it was like she “died,” this situation is very similar to what happened with his friend that had herself split into two because when she asked him back then which one he thought was the real futaba, he said you’re both futaba. So here they’re both kaede and he wanted both to survive
You guys will have to watch the film Rascal Does Not Dream of Dreaming Girl to conclude this story and understand how Shouko fits into all of this.
I was really impressed at how Sheera comprehended the emotions of everyone and even managed to predict some future events in her first viewing. As for me, I was pretty much lost on why there was so much tension about kaede getting her memories back and to be honest I’m not really convinced that someone having their memories altered would be such a huge tragedy ( it’s definitely rough though), especially if it’s in a rather positive direction. I mean we do forget a lot things that we do on a daily basis and I wouldn’t say we become “new person” every time.
Imagine having about two years of your adolescent life just stripped from you forever, like Kaede did. All the experiences of growing up, along with growing pains but also new, enlightening experiences, possibly never to be experienced again. And as for Sakuta's POV, the person who you've been the sole pillar for all of a sudden doesn't remember any of the good you did for her, or any of the good that she did for you in the past two years, and that can never be salvaged. Sure, they can get over that over time, but it's heart wrenching in the moment. I hope this helps explain the "tragedy" part of the whole situation, even if it is just a short-lived tragedy

Because this Kaede was basically just another person in Kaede's body. Sakuta acknowledged this personality as just another person and got attached to her.
She basically just died in Sakuta's POV. She just witnessed an important friend die, it's more than just 2 years of memories.
@@LixienXIII That’s a good way to look at it too, but imagine being, like, 13 years old and then one day waking up and being 15 years old. What if you grew, like, 6 inches during that time or something, it would definitely be jarring haha

To me, Panda Kaede was like a new person being born (when Normal Kaede lost her memories) but this person already knows she's a teen and the situation she's in. Because of Kaede getting her memories back, Panda Kaede basically died, that's why it's a tragedy.

I essentially see the kaede in the show you see up to this point felt more like sakuta's daughter rather than his sister as he basically raised her for 2 years or however long his mom and dad left him with her and to see her dissapear kind of unceremoniously is genuinely heartbreaking literally killing her off in a sense.
Really enjoyed your guys reaction to the show. You guys are funny but also really observant, which is a great mix for sure. The movie covers exactly what Roshi wants and is very emotional. Really looking forward to it.

Man, that scene when Sakuta's wound reopened really hurt and I could totally relate. When you feel grief or stress so strongly that your body reacts in pain (especially on a recurring basis), even when you try to deny how badly you feel, your body is blatantly telling you that you are as hurt as you think you are and it SUCKS! Just makes it worse!
The movie just slaps you with the feels.. but 10/10 as good as Silent Voice as a standalone movie
