- It has been 15 years since the release of the Spider-Man 3 movie and the movie licensed video game. These both ended up with mixed reviews, but the lack of direction is the overall problem. We take a retrospective look at how this Spider-Man game messed up even more than the movie.

Was? It still is. A lot of people want to complain about the Spider-Man 3 PS3/Xbox 360/PC web swinging, saying it's bad, but try to compare Marvel's Avengers Spider-Man's web swinging to the Spider-Man 3 game web swinging.
There is no comparison, you just can't compare the two, the Spider-Man 3 game's web swinging is great, if you actually know how to properly use, and utilize it to the fullest. The speed and momentum you can gain is amazing, it feels so surreal.
You gain such a huge newfound appreciation for it, when you actually unlock all of the web swinging speed upgrades, and know what you're doing with it.

regarding the out-of-sequence movie-related storyline: i know that the game was developed to release along side the movie, but was given SUPER little direction regarding story. key plot points were handed over to help with writing the game, but not much else. the new tech and scope of the game made it impossible to direct a movie and videogame at the same time, so the stories share nothing more than a basic skeletal structure. everything else is completely different.
Key points from the movie felt like they were there just to sell it as tie in game. This game had more like multiple smaller stories rather than one story. It felt like developers wanted to do their own game but were forced to put movie scenes there cause it is tie in.
What’s funny about Harry’s death at the end of the game is that if I remember correctly the ps2 version actually showed his death by him getting pulled into sandman as he exploded. Would’ve expected the ps2 version to be the one that didn’t show his death fully
Idk which version is worse, X360/PS3 where he just disappear or PS2 where he sacrificed himself only for Peter to just say quietly "Harry..."
I could be wrong but wasn’t there a vampire that you had to fight as well while doing investigations on strange things

This was one of the first 5 games I owned on my own Xbox 360 when I was around 7 or 8 so I have a soft spot for it and enjoyed when I was young, but I do realise it has flaws.

Dude same, it was the third 360 game I bought. The first was Viva Piñata and the second was Cabela’s African Safari for some reason.
I loved this game. But im pretty sure the only levels i remember ever doing os the first fire escape and the lizard one.
I still have the game and my ps3 so i might go on it, perhaps in like 2 decades or something
Me with Spider-Man 2😂 i only remember getting to the Mysterio fake fight in the convenience store, then I just stopped progressing and kept beating people up😂 The OG Spiderman games had that effect, you get lost in the sauce🤣🤣💯
I do think that the arsenic candy, apocalypse, dragon tail, dewolf mission, and the mad bomber should probably be the side mission and have kingpin have a side mission boss battle while scorpion, lizard and kraven, venom, sandman, and the new goblin would be the main story.
At least the video game actually gave Venom a monstrous voice instead of his normal voice like it was in the movie
Also I liked how thay put in villains that weren't in the Toby merguier spider man movies made the game interesting instead of boring

You say how the mini bosses take away from the main villains. So wouldn’t replaying things you see in the film do the same thing. It’s based of an early script I think aswell.

I played the Spiderman Ps1 game, where you could only swing 2 times between buildings, and this :D good memories. These movies were good too, compared to the stuff today. I cant even watch or play the new stuff, because its so boring looking.

I have a soft spot for this game since it was the first HD Spider-Man game and I enjoyed seeing Lizard And Kingpin since they weren't In the films or previous games.

It's weird to complain about too much content in a game, when the newest games have so few villains and repeatable content.
Fun fact
The Spider-Man 3 game was based on an earlier draft of the movie. Eddie and Sandman meeting at the park was an actual scene in the film that was cut, also Venom being impaled too was in an early scene. Treyarch didn't have access to the final script since Sony was so secretive with it. With Spider-Man 1 and 2 they were lucky because not much from the earlier scripts changed.
Black Cat from Spider-Man 2 would've returned with her storyline continuing. Her model was even ready and her files can be found in the PC version but the reason for her being cut is unknown. If I had to guess, it was probably due to the game already being crammed
Also Spider-Man 3's game issues already grew worse when Spider-Man 2 devs Tomo Morowaki and Jamie Fristom left. These two guys were the lead programmers of Spider-Man 1 & 2 and Fristrom was the pioneer of that game's swinging. Their new ideas were to incorporate fully stealth sequences and missions as well as a totally revamped combat system more akin to later games like TASM 1 and 2, SMPS4 and Arkham games but issues with higher ups led to them leaving as well as their ideas being cut out. To make matters worse, Activision wanted Treyarch to focus on the next mainline CoD titles so the devs were basically being overworked
Damn, timing really screwed this game over. Imagine how much better it could have been if all of these things didn't go wrong.
Also the PS2 and PSP versions have additional content like Morbius and Shriek, very few QuickTime events, an exclusive side mission system where you have to help the police reduce the amount of gangs in the city, being able to change suits at will(though it becomes harder to switch between black and red in the later half of the story due to it corrupting him), an actual skill tree which you can upgrade and you get to unlock the black suit after you gather a certain amount of collectibles
It also has better conclusions, Mad Bomber is an actual boss fight and the conclusion had him arrested, same with Kraven and the Shriek boss fight too has her using Peter's guilt against him, Harry actually dies due to Venom pulling him whilst he throws a pumpkin bomb at Sandman. Speaking of Sandman you fight him more than once in this version, the first time during the subway, second time at the construction site in his human form where he creates a mini tornado and you as Spidey have to throw objects at him, the last fight is you teaming up with Harry to throw bombs at him. The team-up aspect is handled better here since the first Venom fight, Harry and Spidey have a special tag team attack and with giant Sandman you have to collect and throw Harry's bombs in timek

@@LoneWolfXP The combat is worse in the PS2 and PSP versions though. The only positives are the skill tree, a much more functional dodge system which looks like a beta version of the "perfect dodge" in SMPS4 and a web strike of sorts. The vast combos in the PS3 version are non existent

Can we talk about how ridiculously fast the Quick Time Events were ??? Jesus Christ the Subway Sandman battle , Harry v Sandman and Venom impaling are the ones that I had to retry THE MOST 😡😡I used to ask my big brother to do if for me 😂

I always thought it was a really good game to be honest. It captured the essence of Spider Man but more importantly the essence of Tobey’s version of Peter Parker well but I only played it on PS2

At least in the psp version, Harry wakes up in the hospital instead of home, he actually tells Peter that he realized his dad was insane, and his death is a little more confirmed not much better but a little more certain at least.

If you have a few braincells you really can’t condemn the early days of PS3.
The system was a pain to develop for. And the early library proofs it.
This game and DMC4 (OG, not SE) are super dumb and uncanny when you look at it “unseriously” but when you add the fun factor of gameplay like the upgrades and mastery, as well as story telling of that age. Not to mention the enjoyment I had with the Lizard new subplot.
Yeah… gaming had a different vibe back then. Not that I don’t like today’s movies.
I played it on the PS2 which IMO was pretty good.
At the time the PS3 version looked good, my PC couldnt handle it, but the clay looking characters looked funky.
My main issue which was not the games fault was that i bought a copy from Germany which said it was fully translated into germany which i understand, but when i went back home it it turned out to be a bold lie since everything was in French so i could barely follow the story. Dunno if this is common in germany, i bought it from Saturn.
Love the scale of the city and how many interiors there are. Much as I love insomniacs spidey, I never really feel like I’m free falling from the stratosphere in that game when I jump off the Empire State Building lol

Maaan that spider man stealth mission had me down bad for years. I played the game when it first came out and didn beat that mission til at least like 2011. Sneaking around and tryna get those doors unlocked with the code was so hard for me to do I had to take a break until I finally beat that mission then I beat the game.
It's also worth mentioning that Morbius and Shriek appear in the PS2 version.

The bicycle kick was in SM2. You just had to be in spider reflex mode. The combos in that mode to fucking insane.
you could not be more wrong. This was by far my favorite spiderman video game, the music, sound effects, the graphics of Spiderman himself was phenomenal, the villains, the storyline and missions, everything. So good.

It's been mentioned a few times in the comments, but I have the urge to say that too:
The game was rushed as hell to meet deadlines, and it really shows in the gameplay and overall structure of the game.
I've never confirmed this, but it's very likely that the team weren't given the script until late into development (and as some have mentioned, they were basing the story bits off early drafts of the script), so they were making their own stories until then and the movie plot was shoe-horned into the game.
Also, Kraven didn't fuse with the Lizard. Calypso (Kraven's partner) put a spell on Connors so she and Kraven could escape.
Overall, I'm aware of the game's faults, but I like it despite them. And I actually like the non-linear structure of the missions, that's what makes the game feel like open world. It's a shame it hasn't been done again since.
The game took 3 years to develop lmao. Treyarch reused the NGL engine for all their open world Spider-Man games(Spider-Man 2 up to Web of Shadows), since it was open world they spent a bulk of the development fleshing it out and since they didn't have most of the movie script by then they had to rely on original content and put in the movie content later on

The first video game I ever played, and I used to love it. Although even back then I preferred the PS2/PSP version, which I bought second.
Nowadays I fully recognise how lackluster (and *sometimes* outright terrible) this game was.
This was the first Spider-man game I ever played when I was a kid. So it holds a special place in my heart

The way you explained the story so calmingly, but at the same time so confused 😂 it was the best part. Man I didn’t remember all that, I’m from Brazil, so 12 year old me playing this and not knowing shit about English, I used to love this game. Of course I didn’t need to understand English to ask why the hell Penny was hanging from a tree out of nowhere 😂 but okay, I wouldn’t think much about it.
This game is the definition of making money from the hype, I’m glad vídeo game movies aren’t a thing anymore, they finally understood they can create something new. Xbox/PS3 era was a strange time for game, except exclusive ones. Remember Never Dead? If not, don’t bother.
I only remember that Venom were difficult af to beat.

The Next Generation version of Spider-Man 3 was horrible and I never played it. I played the PS2 version of it plenty of times and it was the best! There were many faults in The Next Generation one: The story did not have Doctor Connors help Spider-Man examine the symbiote nor saying it's weaknesses, it only had Spider-Man changing Connors back to normal and turning all the lizards into people again. Major graphic problems, so many side missions and the symbiote suit does not act like it all. It might as well be another plain suit. All it has is a red rage meter to indicate that Spidey is mad but the PS2 version has Spidey switch between the symbiote and regular suit and the symbiote acts like the creature it always has. Talk about major plot holes in this version while the PS2 version is straight forward and it was released after The Next Generation version.
Good point that having a ton of villains with their own stories can definitely dilute the main villain's story, as also seen in Insomniac's Marvel Spider-Man on PS4, which had a lot of boss villain storylines too. Marvel Spider-Man Miles Morales seems to be more focused with the story. For video games, lots of bosses are understandable for the gameplay first, though not great for the story necessarily.

no matter what the world says.... this game has been on the top of list of my best greatest games.. literally the fights, the combat style, the dodging system, the wall running and much more literally made it something EVEN MARVEL SPIDERMAN REMASTER WILL NEVER BE!!

I remember this was the first ever game i played on my ps3 when i was 7 or 8 and i found it so hard. I couldnt beat the game because on one of the first levels after you get the black suit and you fight kraven you had to spam x to lift a pilar which was blocking you and 7 year old me didnt have the strength to do it. I got past it once and died straight after and had to go back and do it again. Brought me to tears and never played it again.
I playey and loved the PS2 Version. Hunting down and fighting The Lizard, Shriek and Morbius and The H-Bomber. I still remember how hard my Heart was pounding while fighting the Big Lizard. Still my favourite Boss

venom does get impaled in the novel where he was a skeleton the whole time and there was a cool fight with the symbiote and Spider-Man, the ending to this game was random and don’t make sense they really letting sandman walk away with his daughter 😂
I played the ps2 version and they had a morbius boss fight which to me was cool. Really surprised ps3 didnt have him
As a huge Spider-Man fan, you don't understand how frustrating it was for me to play this. I tried to enjoy the game and look past the problems but, I've tried about 3 different times to beat this game and I gave up every time. A part of me still wants to do beat it but, overall 2 was a much better game. They should've just followed the Spider-Man 2 formula. This game was a huge let down. They made a lot of mistakes with this one. Great movie but, mediocore game.
The thing that ruined this game for me was the quick time events. I can forgive mid 2000s crappy storylines…but this crap-designed QTEs with no forgiveness for error and requiring robot reflexes was just horrible.
definitely doesn't help that this game was a follow-up to the Spider-Man 2 movie game which - up until insomniac's Spider-Man in 2018 - was considered to be the best Spider-Man game. It had almost impossible shoes to fill. it's a shame too, because while even the third movie was considered overbloated and poorly paced, the game could really fleshed out the villains and gave them more screen time and fuller arcs; I definitely agree with what you said about too many villains in the game. There was already too many villains by movie standards, but three would have been fine if they made the most of the game's time.
you wrong, SP3 The game was unfinished, but this game is a benchmark. No other spider game has combat mechanics like 3. And objectively still the best flights on the web. Take it back and apologize.
Kingpin surprised the heck out of me in this game. Peak human or not, ain’t no way this man should be ragdolling Spider Man that flawlessly especially with the symbiote on.

When I first got this game, I didn’t even know it existed. I was confused and thought maybe this is the movie. I originally went to buy NFS pro street, but got this instead. I was excited because I loved the first two games. When I booted it up on my ps2, I was like.. wtf is this shit. Why does it look like it’s an incomplete game. I only played a few missions and then stopped playing completely because I thought it was a fake game or sth lol
Not the presentation of it, but I prefer Venom blackmailing Sandman into working with him. In the movie, Sandman's all gung ho about killing Spider-Man until Venom gets beaten, and it's jarring.
I had to nope out of this game. The wonky camera, clunky combat and no healing factor made it a nightmare. The PS2 and GBA versions were at least playable. The PS3 version was a disaster.
Yeah, they kinda screwed over Harry and Sandman. I could have lived without the gang storyline if it meant giving them their proper movie stories like the other games did.
I will say though Venom kidnapping Penny and forcing Sandman to work with him upped his intimidation here.
Got the game on eBay, and it came with an extra bonus disk. Any clue what's on there? The game CD is super clean, but the bonus disk is a bit scratched and has some kinda stain on there so I'm scared to put it in my ps3.
If I remember correctly, early builds of Web of Shadows combat were found in this game via cheats or smth idk.

The story is based from what I can tell very loosely on early drafts of the movie. Someone from Sony probably sent Treyarch a 10 bullet list for plot points to include because you have to remember the consoles were brand new at the time of the movie being filmed, and the game being developed
This is great and all but is it just me that’s absolutely baffled that this game was released on Xbox 360 AND Gameboy advance? In my head I feel like the Gameboy advance was obsolete at this time 😅
