Gene Hoglan drum play through of Galaktikon track On My Way. From Gene's brand new DVD The Atomic Clock : The Clock Strikes Two.
"In November of 2008, as Brendon and I were just about to go in and track DethAlbum II, we hit some kind of contractual snag with the Turner Network, delaying the recording indefinitely. So, instead of eating the recording time that had been scheduled for many weeks, Brendon asked if I would be interested in doing a bunch of tunes that he'd had kicking around for awhile. And although we had only done the first DethAlbum together as well as the subsequent tour, I jumped at the chance to work with Brendon and Ulrich (Wild-our producer) in the studio again. Both guys make recording a total blast. So chill, so creative, so allowing of others to show their creativity, I'da been nuts to turn it down. Since I am not nuts, we all got in there and made a really killer album which went on to become Brendon Small's Galaktikon, a true gem."
"Not much to say about this track that I didn't already say on the DVD, but I sure enjoy the tune, as well as the part I had in creating the super-fun middle section. I recall that towards the end of my tracking, Brendon mentioned that the network were finally getting over their Cranial Rectitis and were going to finally give the go-ahead to get started on DethAlbum II, but as I found out way later, according to Brendon it was actually really touch and go to get that go-ahead from the CR-afflicted network. DethAlbum II quite possibly was not ever going to be made. Boy, that woulda made titling that third DethAlbum even more challenging..."
The Wait is Over!

Much like people, in this day and age, are still watching, in awe, videos of Buddy Rich from the 70s, people will watch Hoglan videos in 2050 or something, and realize that he is the greatest metal drummer who ever lived, perhaps one of the greatest drummers period. Thomas Lang and Johnny Rabb are pretty amazing technically, and so is Mike Mangini, but when it comes to laying down an awesome beat that fits a song to a T, no one comes close to Gene. Symbolic, by Death, is still, to this day, the greatest drum album ever IMHO. And I'm never wrong. So there.
I agree,.......Hoglan is tehnical and emotional drummer and he puts the right hits on the right places.
I would say Individual Thought Patterns is slightly better than Symbolic. But bother albums have some of the sickest drumming on a metal album period
Gene is just so fucking groovy.
Ummmm chris adler???
darkside from Mgla is a monster - maybe not in terms of influence but on every level of his own playing
For all the drummers out there that gripe about not being able to play double bass because you can't afford a $1000 set of Trick pedals this video should serve as the biggest STFU ever. Gene Hoglan, pair of 25 year old Camcos, while wearing boots. Stop blaming your gear and practice.
Camcos? What’s the closest pedal to that nowadays?
There's a drummer with a UA-cam channel - Lux Drummerette - she plays double bass in stilettos - playing Slayer, Megadeth, Sepultura and other covers. Plays in a couple of bands too.
I always liked the camco pedals, the strap drive Pearls was a favorite also. I'm very pleased with my demon drives.
i play the drums barefoot i used dw pedals for years now i use tama pedals
some1 knows what the FUCK they're tak8ng about! its nigga GigDrummer. I got no clue i dont play drums. you sound On fuckiing P . O . I . N . T !
@GeneHoglanOfficial we need more Galaktikon videos. Shits dope. 🤘
His precision is better than most drum machines.
5 years later & great!"_
So smooth, so groovy... again, wicked snare!!!!
Amazing drummer! Nice,Cool personality. I love the Camco pedals with the Danmar beaters. I use that same combo myself. Unfortunately I'm not as good as Gene.
awesome with the boots!!
Hoglan Rules !!!!🤘🤘
Cool as usual!
That snare is sic
goddamn!!!
fucking amazing, as expected.
🔥🤘🔥🔥🤘🔥
MELDRUM FOREVER!
Simon Phillips, Mark Zonder, Mark Nauseef, and that guy from Godsmack
Does it get any more metal than playing in boots?
Hoglan is God.
Fuckin sick as always, but why 2 different boots? 😂
I think I remember reading sometime last year that Gene's bag containing his drumming boots got stolen/lost while on tour.
i thought he might have a foot condition...when i met him years ago he walked around with a cane
Robin Barker he’s wearing one of them in this video though, one on his left but the one on the right looks like a stripper boot
When I saw him in 98 with SYL, he was on crutches, maybe it's a seriously long term condition? Doesn't seem to change his mastery of drumming though.
After discovering this comment 2 years later, I think he’s wearing the same boots and I was just a retard 🤦♂️
Mr Hoglan until Ill natured spiritual invasion has been a total inspiration, regrettably, triggers, New metal and a bunch of bad projects stopped his "mayhem"
Wow how come I never paid attention to Old Man's child line up ! I mean, I know Nick Barker was there with Galder, but never thought of Gene Hoglan tearing it up in a black metal band in Norway ! Awesome to say the least. It's true I'm a guitar player, but Gene Hoglan, Steve Asheim, Richard Christy, Paul Bostaph, Menza and Lombardo are my personal favorite hitters! Listening to them makes me admire the machine that is the human body ! Peace from Morocco
anahowana sure, galder played with different drummers, but in 98 Gene gave for me his Last masterpiece. I think a musician, like an artist, must seek perfection, but the way some guys and Mr Hoglan, changed 180degrees his way, for him better, for some fans, not so much, Regards!
Gene, what heads are you using on your toms?
Evans G2
I'm still hoping for 'Almost Again' to be on a DVD...
Вот вам і *Самоучка*
omg why you so skinny!
boring
feel free to be boring too and cover&record any of his songs!
So fucking solid. Seriously one of the most technically proficient metal drummers of all time.
FanaticalDrummer your forgetting Dave Lombardo
maybe - lars from metallicas pretty good, splayer drummer, JFAC drummer... but yeah this dudes 10/10 but some break 10/10
Hoglan has recorded 1000% more records than Lombardo ever did @@Brandon_94
Saw this man play in Vancouver,Canada many years ago when he played for Opeth. Opeth needed a drummer last minute and this guy learned their set in about a day! Pretty talented!
I'm sure Gene uses sheets to write out songs. If you know the measures.
Good to go.
@@patrickgelder-ph5yd yeah I his dvd he says he doesn't know how to read or write music he keeps it in his head memorizes.
Watching 'The Atomic Clock' play is like watching the sun rise. It comes naturally and effortlessly.
TOO NICE GENE!!!!!!!
Fucking beast. He drummed 95 percent of that with his eyes closed
Most other metal drummers would have made this song sound extremely generic.
guys clearly BADASS c . l . e . a . r . l . y !
my god that snare is like 4 feet deep lol
Its really a kick drum with a snare spring
Keep your Toms below your heart.
How old are those boots i swear ive seem those In all your videos lol
I remember Gene wearing those boots in the very first dvd
Maybe he's got 10 pairs
Gene is one with his instrument, fucking amazing!
I will never not be impressed watching this man drum
dude that snare is ENORMOUS i love it!!!
No wasted motion with Gene. What a treat to watch and listen to.
Still, pound for pound (excuse the pun), the greatest HM drummer, ever. Nice guy, too.🤘🏻😎
Him and Richard Christy are in my Top 5.
LOL!!! I'll excuse you
Without dispute best metal drummer. That ive heard at least. Man the drums and percussion in this track is beautiful!!!
Infuckingcredible drummer. Admittedly, as a drummer I find myself trying to copy him and Lombardo etc. etc. Gene I met you once in Edmonton, and we have a few mutual friends in common. Honestly you're probably in the top five living metal drummers. Top three, in fact. My own personal favourite.
He just feels the music, look at him just play with the eyes closed just vibing. He is just on another level
Such a great drummer. He's known for his speed, which is astounding for sure, but what I love about Gene's playing is the parts he comes up, and the orchestration he uses to execute them. The Strapping Young Lad track "Almost Again" is a good example. That is an interesting beat that no other metal player would create/write. VERY musical player.
Gene Hoglan is the most groove metal drummer. You know... Him, Lombardo and Vinnie Paul.
I practice my double bass with boots and 5 pound ankle weights why? Cause Gene told me to!!!
Gen makes it seems that he's playing easy stuff, he's so relaxed and happy. I also can't understand how he's able to play with those boots! He's a legend, nothing less.
On top of being a machine, he writes some of the most fun and coolest drums in metal. 3:45 insane
Does Gene have some amazing health routine? He seems to age slowly.
Gene Hogan is not only one of the best drummers ever, he’s also one of the nicest people. Keep rockin Mean Gene!
Love gene and his drumming...he just was so in the "drum groove" here 😎👍😊 it's also my happy place as a drummer myself. Locking in time and jamming just feels soo good.
Dark Angels Leave Scars is one of my faves since 36 years! Drumming and riffing at its best! Best regards from Sweden and Germany!
Haha! Fuck dude... Aside from how amazing, sublime, fluid, relaxed, economic and musically intelligent the playing is, the slight flams between the kick and snare makes it for me. So fucken good.
Dude plays the most insane patterns as if it were easy. Truly one of the greatest drummers to ever live
When Pickles decides to play the drums AND sing
I wish you'd bring back the proppeler cymbal back into your kit. BIIIIIIINNNNGGGG!
Fuckin awesome gene! Brendon is an amazing musician as well and you two guys kill shit together man.. i really wanna hear the rest of the galaktikon stuff.. it's so different from the dethklok stuff.. But amazing none the less.. great track man.. keep it up bro..
Sweet track, could watch you play all day everyday. Awesome shirt too.
My calves hurt just watching him kill that double bass.
Did he just do that with his eyes closed?
THE original super drummer
Ever wanted to see what would happen if a metronome had sex with a drum machine? Here it is.
Old school Camco pedals. Those were the shit back in the day. Long before pedals became overpriced gimmicks with promises of better playing.
Wanna hear something cool as hell?
I had Gene living with me for a month. Hanging out, taking lessons, life tips, eating generally getting to know the person whom I idolized as a fan.
One day he gets a call. He asks me if I had ever heard of Dethklok. After explaining the show and us watching some DVR'd episodes he tells me the phone call he just received was Brendon wanting him for drums on an upcoming album and tour. I was jumping out of my seat.
How many people can say they were witness to someone enlistment to a project? Greatful doesn't even cover it. All I can say is, GENE HOGLAN is my bro and BFF as well as an musical idol.
Thank Big Daddy, love ya!
Paul Feldman amazing to hear that he seems to be a really cool guy, besides of being the most amazing extreme metal drummer of all time
gene always been the best he has hidden arms n legs
Drums with Gene looks so easy, so you catch your sticks and.....oh wait !?!
Love how chilled he looks when he plays - definitely up for getting this DVD
Had the pleasure to watch him Drum in my shit hole city.
TheSpineSplitter1990 Me too - Detroit in 1995.
I can't even count how many times I've watched him play live. Back when he lived in Vancouver it seemed like every other weekend one of his numerous side projects would play at a dirty little bar downtown. He would almost always be out on the floor to watch the other bands and mingle outside in between sets. Chatted with him a bunch and he's incredibly chill and down to earth, all around nice guy.
I first discovered Hoglan through friends who asked if I’d play drums for their band. After listening, I hoped we’d still remain friends because fuck no! 😂🥁🙋♂️😂
Not for kids son
This is hands down the best drummer on the planet 🤘🏽…
Fuk Lars ulrich for thinking he can keep up..!
Luv you Gene ..fan for ever 🤘🏽🇨🇦
Absolutely amazing watching him play I think some parts he was doing it with his eyes closed
Ads off
1st time I've seen a drummer use his left hand for the high hat. Other than me. I cant do the cross arm thing. And I'm right handed! Is this normal?
Why need to use a sound trimmers?you are a very very nice drummer,i think you and your sound dont need that..
fucking awesome, I keep coming back to watch
One of the greatets drummers of all times,
For me the real king of metal drumming!
Gene is such an inspiration, such a cool dude too.
is there anything more metal than wrecking the drums in combat boots?
Un gran maestro de la percusión siempre vigente. Saludos desde Chile, Gene!!!
Is no one else going to mention he had his eyes closed? Gene is the GOAT
Awesome drummer. Get those ankle weights
I can't like the video because it's at 666 likes

Él no es de este planeta

That's 666th degree my friend
The best
Brother... I know you would never say this aloud.... But YOU are the FKN man!!!! Much love from Texas
Parabéns pelos vídeos. Gosto muito porque além de ser um grande Baterista, aprendendo suas técnicas devido a sensibilidade da edição do vídeo. Parabéns, Abraço!
When they're doing the 7/8 part with the straight sticking and the crashes, his snare count keeps striking on the snare for every hit. Where is he hitting doubles to accommodate and not need to switch sticks?
With boots on? For real?!
4real
Check out Inferno of Behemoth, dude plays with biker boots on.
If only the audio was louder on this page. It seems it mustve been engineered just a couple nothces to minimal. Oh well Gene is the man!
Джин, ты лучший.
Im fucking in love with this guy !!! And no I’m not gay lol
Hell yes gene! Sounds awesome!!!
Always a pro.. dude just plays .. oh yeah, plays WELL!!!!
I can't get over how fucking good that snare sounds.
I love this guy since the first time I heard him. It was a moment ago in my favorite band, DEATH !
