I remember when I was living in Hyde Park Chicago back in the Ron Hardy days (those who know, know), this guy in an apartment I used to live in I used to play this record and all of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes everyday religiously. He had some Harman Kardon speakers and a nice turntable I couldn't remember what brand but the sound used to resonate through the entire building. No one complained. Those were the best days of my life...
This song has aged like fine wine ☺️
What a great message this song sent about not trusting so-called friends that hang around when you have money. It was very similar to the message the O'JAYS were sending with the song "backstabbers". It was true way back then and it's true for our generation today, please watch your friends. Things are not always the way they seem.

It was rumored that Teddy got real deep into the recording track on the second take till the point when Gamble and Huff said " Keep recording Teddy's in deep mode " Teddy was expressing real feelings...Harold Melvin was Jealous of Teddy before this song but THIS IS THE SONG THAT MADE MELVIN CRAZY....

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes were nothing before Teddy Pendergrass arrived and were 2x nothing after he left! Harold Melvin was the reason though. He cheated Teddy and the rest of the group out of potential millions. Teddy and his career blew up 10x over and eclipsed the success of the group by miles. Harold Melvin couldn't buy a hit or decent group member once Teddy left.
