Ah, that's beautiful! Indeed, Visions of the Emerald Beyond may be my favorite music ever, the funk, vision, INTENSITY, and spiritual rawness is unmatched to my ears that are subsequently spoiled..
I love this!!! Actually, it isn't a ring modulator but a 360 Systems Frequency Shifter which provided a linear frequency shift of harmonics instead of the sum & difference of a ring modulator.. google it for more info. Very cool!
I just love the look on Ponty's face while he stands there through JMcL's lengthy solo - not the first night he'd waited 5+ minutes! Utterly awesome stuff, incredible to see Narada Michael Walden and Ralphe Armstrong.
This was also on the "bonus" audio tracks of the Eagle Rock Mahavishnu "Live At Montreux " DVD. They give no explanation of why the video footage is missing. I think McLaughlin was writing tunes that would be on "Visions Of Emerald" beyond album while touring in support of Apocalypse album . probably intergrated them into the apocalypse tunes to try them out.
That version of "Dawn" from the 1974 Central Park concert also appears as one of the "bonus" audio tracks on the Live At Monteux DVD , its mis-labelled as Sanctuary however.
RE# pnebenzahl Well Ponty had different style . But on the MAHAVISHNU NY CENTRAL PARK CONCERT TV which you can hear on that website I mentioned , there is version of "dawn' where Ponty and mclaughin do some blazing interplay . Ponty more than kept up to John.
@stigs013 You can get a ring modulator in pedal form these days - sort of a clangorous type of effect - one popular one is the Electro-Harmonix Frequency Analyzer and Boss makes one now too.
I hear that excessive, scratchy, high-end sound on some of the other live audio/video recordings, esp. with the violin(s). Wonder if it was the stage volume. I know in my band if you keep your amp low, you get cranked up by the soundman. That would obviously be reflected in the balance of any soundboard recordings.
Re the string quartet: I kind of know what you mean. They are all top players, but for one thing I think they're let down by the sound quality. Maybe it was miked badly, far too 'toppy' and thin sounding.
All hail the glory that is "bazonics". JM playing Cheroke on Johnny Carson - still one of my favorite U2b vids. I know what you mean "ahead of his time" but in a way, wasn't it the perfect time? This kind of experimentation doesn't seem to be tolerated anymore.
Now I'm a huge fan of John Mclaughlin, am I however the only one that feels like he didn't capture to beauty of the song 'On the Way Home to Earth'? That song is one of my favorite songs ever made, but I'm not too fond of the live performance.
Yeah, It's an early version though isn't it? it doesn't yet have the structure that it gained in January 75 during the "...Emerald Beyond" recording Sessions so...
solo is great the back up "orchestra" very amateur to the point of conflicting with the quality of the entire piece. would have been better with jm, drums, bass, jeal luc, and call it a day!

What a reorganization of a band...........Jean-Luc, Narada, Ralpe, Gayle.............incredible musicians!! John Mac is a genius.

greatest guitarist.......he must be. I know there is no absolute but hes up there for originality and vision.
Not an effects pedal as such. He put it through a ring modulator. This is in the days before the words 'guitar synth' were even thought of.
Wicked, manic, and absolutely demented version, love it.

Ace. Top of the Tree somewhere between Risk and Absolute Certitude.

i think john was using some crazy huge old school moog or other synthesizer, he said he toured once with rig that had a synthesizer for each string!
WOW... I just had an LSD flashback...
or maybe it is just MO jammin... brings back great memories..!!!
This solo reminds me of Shakti. I think that this is what let to that band.
thats the best!
Man, the drums are so in

Any other tunes where John's playing with a Ring Modulator?

McLaughlin solo sounds like an Ataria game on crack! Which is a good thing! Awesome!
Sorry, just kidding.

What tha...
solo sounds nothing like shakti, lol
woodros well if the sound was that of a clean acoustic guitar it would pretty much sound like it
