Oh my gosh I might sound like a fan girl but I didn't know Kerry Washington has Jamaican roots she has been my favourite actress since 07 and i didn't know this no wonder I've always respected her mannerisms and intelligence because its similar to my upbringing . And Purple Hibiscus is one of my best reads so far, it is a very good book. And I always love to see when a mother and daughter bond. Friendship for life

Kerry Washington' mom is so pretty. Daughter like mom. She even has her mom personality. It's good to see she's close to her parents. This is especially important today because we see a lot of families breaking up. Mothers and daughters relationship is so precious. I had this with my mom before she passed and my daughter and I share this type of relationship. I know they are proud of their little girl.🙋🖐️🤓😎😊💯💥

West Indians who leave the islands leave because they seek higher learning or better opportunities which is why our families and communities but an emphasis on education. I'm not sure who claimed African American culture in a "bad black culture" I just know that most Caribbean Americans put a strong focus on getting an education and advancement.

I'm caribbean American, educated in London and one of my closet friends is Canadian( Jamaican). I don't know where you get Caribs being "bad blacks" in the UK? Americans in general are seen as "bad" and "Ignorant" in Europe - this something I had to deal with from Uk to Portugal.
That is right. I know a woman who raised her daughter to not be ghetto, to speak properly and all that. Certainly my mom never let me speak out of turn to anybody. :-)

Very well said. I still don't understand that mentality that for a person of color to be educated, and to carry themselves gracefully is to be "bougie." It is so demeaning, and many people of color need to start understanding that. If a person can't even view themselves in a positive light, how can they expect someone else to do so?
That's a major point though, because there are those that speak with so-called proper grammar who indubitably feel they are superior or more educated; simply because of their tonality.
I know some people who speak the so-called proper way that are dumb as a rock; and on the obverse, there are some i know whose grammar is atrocious, but are some of the smartest people you will ever meet.
The way one speaks does not denote intelligence or common sense!
Black is not a race, it is a social and political condition. Black is a skin color or series of skin colors combined with a common political condition of outsider-ness.
