This song is incredibly moving, especially when sung by Craig. So many of us want to find our calling before we die, and I think that's what this song is about. We often get pinned into making ends meet, when all we truly want is freedom and to find our true purpose in life. Luckily for Craig, I think he found his and took flight.
I know that in terms of vocals alone, Ben Platt blows every other version out of the water but Craig's will always be my favorite. Absolutely untouchable.
I love Ben's version because of the explosive power and "prettiness" (forgive me for describing vocal skill as just prettiness, I'm not a professional singer), but I adore the original just as much. It has the same raw emotion behind it that I can't find anywhere else (I could absolutely be proven wrong on this, please suggest other awesome covers of this song if you have any!), and it's simply just beautiful. The pacing is wonderful, too. It's fast when it needs to be and slow where there's more emotion, and even then the entire song is just beautiful. I wish the original was on Spotify.
@@eileenmettler6838 I took your suggestion, and oh man. He's amazing! He sings with the emotion Flight needs, and his voice is beautiful. Thanks for making my day :)))
@@danivee8572 I’m so glad you looked him up. When he says that it’s his song it truly is his song. Ughhh I can listen to it over and over again and never get tired of it.
Oh no, there are much prettier and technically astounding arrangements of this song than Ben's. He is insanely talented, but his explosive style is boring to me. I'm a lot more interested in the subtle gestures that take wondrous control these days. The arrangement with Sutton Foster is a great example. Watch the live one (at the Barnes and Nobel) and you'll see what I mean.
Let me run through a field in the night Let me lift from the ground til my soul is in flight Let me sway like the shade of a tree Let me swirl like a cloud in a storm on the sea. Wish me on my way Through the dawning day I... Wanna flow, wanna rise, wanna spill Wanna grow in a grove on the side of a hill. I don't care if the train runs late If the checks don't clear If the house blows down. I'll be off where the weeds run wild Where the seeds fall far from this earthbound town. And I'll start to soar! Watch me rain til I pour out! I'll catch a ship and it'll sail me astray Get caught in a wind and I'll just have to obey time Time flying away! Flight! Ahhh... Ahhh... Ahhh... Let me leave behind All the clouds in my mind I Wanna wake without wondering why Finding myself in a burst for the sky! Flight! Flight! I'll just roll! Let me lose all control I Wanna float like a wish in a well Free as the sound of the sea in a shell I don't know But maybe I'm just a fool I should keep to the ground I should stay where I'm at Maybe everyone has hunger like this And the hunger will pass But I can't think like that All I know is that somewhere in a clearing (somewhere) There's a grain of sunlight on a river long and wide (there's sunlight) And I have such a river inside! Let me run through a field in the night! Let me lift from the ground til my soul is in flight! Let me sway like the shade of a tree! Let me swirl like a cloud in a storm on the sea! Wish me on my way! (wish me on my way) Through the dawning day I... Wanna flow, wanna rise, wanna spill... Wanna grow on the side of a hill... Wanna shift like a wave rolling on Wanna drift from the path I've been traveling upon Before I am gone.

I’m glad choir helped me discover this beautiful piece of music
Incredible. This original version is touching because he's singing with raw emotion. I would love to know the inspiration behind this song.
really neat to see the songwriter himself performing the song, thank you!

Blessed to have had a class with Craig and to work on some of his phenomenal material over the years. Sweet human.
Even if other covers may be more polished - this? This is the real thing.
Actually, it's the best version I've heard. The guy wrote the song and he knows best how to sing it!!
Listen to the Ben Platt version!!!
Thank you for writing this song........
What a beautiful voice....
I love the Sutton foster version of this 💖
SAME. That arrangement is astounding
@@Shrilaraune it’s beautiful
Let me run through a field in the night
Let me lift from the ground til my soul is in flight
Let me sway like the shade of a tree
Let me swirl like a cloud in a storm on the sea.
Wish me on my way
Through the dawning day I...
Wanna flow, wanna rise, wanna spill
Wanna grow in a grove
on the side of a hill.
I don't care if the train runs late
If the checks don't clear
If the house blows down.
I'll be off where the weeds run wild
Where the seeds fall far from this
earthbound town.
And I'll start to soar!
Watch me rain til I pour out!
I'll catch a ship and it'll sail me astray
Get caught in a wind and I'll just have to obey time
Time flying away!
Flight!
Ahhh...
Ahhh...
Ahhh...
Let me leave behind
All the clouds in my mind I
Wanna wake without wondering why
Finding myself in a burst for the sky!
Flight!
Flight!
I'll just roll!
Let me lose all control I
Wanna float like a wish in a well
Free as the sound of the sea in a shell
I don't know
But maybe I'm just a fool
I should keep to the ground
I should stay where I'm at
Maybe everyone has hunger like this
And the hunger will pass
But I can't think like that
All I know is that somewhere in a clearing (somewhere)
There's a grain of sunlight on a river long and wide (there's sunlight)
And I have such a river inside!
