  • Our garage door stopped working. I found out one of the two springs snapped. I ordered a pair of Garage Door Torsion Springs for ~$115 (and the winding bars) from Amazon and came in the mail two days later.
This was an easy and enjoyable fix. I learned and saved a ton doing it myself.

We're building our own home and I'm doing majority of the non-major tasks. UA-cam has been a great source of educational content and we're paying it forward by documenting our build. This garage installer video is right on time! Love your instructional video style. I also watched your garage door opener install from 3 years ago which lead me to this video. Keep up the great work and thanks for the info! - Byron

Thank you Byron! Indeed, it has saved me so much. Before UA-cam, when something came up I'd sit on a bucket in Lowe's and read the construction books for sale so I didn't have to pay for it.

Nice job. My Dad wrote the instructions in magic marker on the header beam above the door as we did this about 3 times over 50 years.

Thanks Tommy! Wow, in wouldn't have thought I'll run into it that much. Funny enough, I was going to mount the two metal bars in the same spot, I like the way he thinks!

@@kove Funny. My grandpa would put a little white tag with date and his initials on things around the family house that he had fixed over the years. I went to put in a dimmer switch in their dining room in 1978 after he had passed, and inside the light switch box was one of these tags where he had replaced a 1900s era bakelite switch with a more modern one in 1951. I updated the tag and it made Grandma smile.

That's a neat, practical and interesting tradition! I was telling my wife how I've replaced/fixed nearly everything in our home, I need to start tracking it.

@@kove My Dad retired in 1980 and passed away in 2008. While retired he kept a logbook of all the problems he solved around the house and documented the details of any special tools or tricks he used. He said is was very helpful as he could go back and look in the logbook to see how he fixed pesky recurring problems, as you tend to forget how you did things "last time." I have the logbook now and treasure it greatly. Take care.

The garage door should be set to neutral tension. So, it should stop halfway up from closed and come halfway down from open. 👍🏿

Thanks Big! Good to know, that's where I decided was just the right amount.

Wouldn't it be easier to attach the cables and spools first and then apply the spring tension. The trick here is to make sure the cable tension is the same on both ends so the door moves up evenly.

That scale, what a clever idea, we think alike but I dont know if I would of thought of that to calibrate! Thanks for sharing

Thanks WC! I'm surprised I haven't needed to tighten it up, apparently you have to do that sometimes after the initial install.

@@kove pretty sure it’s the same as lug nuts concept, your wheels are fine after they have been installed but they should be torqued again after 50-100 miles, same with these bolts after so many cycles and vibration they won’t be at the same torque.

The newer in tube torque master spring system is so slick and simple to install, I loved it when installing my new garage door a while back, it’s easy peasy but I have heard the old school springs are better in the longevity department an slightly easier to service.

Gets the “(easy)” rating because you didn’t break out your kevlar flak jacket, that’s when we know the project is getting dangerous. 😂😂

What was the reason for the vice grips on the Rod, I seen it but you didn’t say why you put it there.
    Awesome video by the way!!!

They stopped it from spinning out of control. You see what would happen at the very beginning of the vid.
