Hey Nile, i was curious about using the starting EO (such as the one in this video) for use in soap fragrance. I was unaware of the benzoic acid that forms as a contaminant from storage and whatnot. The soap i was looking to make would be a hard castile using NaOH as the base. Just to confirm, any benzoic acid, that may potentially be in whatever oil I may find, should be neutralized upon contact w the base? Also, how about the potential long-term storage of almond scented bars of soap? Would there be any potential risk of the miniscule amounts of benzaldehyde (per bar) becoming oxidized into any harmful benzoic acid in time? Should I be concerned w this @ all? Then again, I could imagine how the chemical nature of the soap might prevent oxidation on some level... yet I'm new to the soap-making world. Anyhow... NileRed why don't you try making benzaldehyde from Benzyl alcohol using pyridinium chlorochromate or P.C.C in DCM ? You can make your own P.C.C...buy some Vitamin B- Niacin from the health food shop and pyrolyse it, via a distillation..and CrO3.if you can't source chromium oxide you can make it fairly easily from any chromate or dichromate with conc. sulfuric, and the only other reagent is hydrochloric acid. You could even get real clever and substitute the pyridine with quinoline, easily made by the Skraup synthesis, just Aniline with glycerol and conc. sulfuric...quinolinium chlorochromate is just as effective as P.C.C..the yield of the oxidation is high, over 80% because the aldehyde is not in an aqueous form and thus does not form a hydrate, which are much more susceptible to oxidation.

There is a glass connecting adapter with PTFE stopcock you can attach between condenser the the distillation vacuum adapter. In theory you can close it down, break vacuum (the rest of the apparatus is under vacuum), replace the flask, pull vacuum and slowly and very carefully open the valve. But it is much easier to just get a cow adapter and two small flasks. It costs about the same and you save time.

Some of the bitter olmond oil on ebay is even found on th Unite3d states ready to be shipped anywhere in the US. I don't understand this. But bassically the question boils down to can a buy it from ebay without geting arested or no?
It is not controlled or anything, but probably watched, as it is a precurser to a prescurser to a precurser of Methamphetamine. (Benzaldehyde + Nitroethane = 2-Nitropropene + Iron Catalyst = Phenylacetone = Methamphetamine) So as long as you dont also buy nitroethane, you should have no problems at all.
Indeed yes. Na2HCO3 is heavier than water so increasing its concetration increases mass of the solution while volume stays the same. Hence the density increases.

Think about how much more pressure there is to play with on the POSITIVE side of the gauge? Plus, if something implodes, I guess it wont be flying into my face, but away from it, right?
can you please tell me which OTC products containing the highest amount of Benzaldehyde? and is 65$ for 500ml of pure Benzaldehyde?
I think everyone is wondering this but not admitting it. Why not!?!?
SO CAN YOU USE BITTER ALMOND OIL WITHOUT THIS DISTILLATION PROCESS AND GET THE SAME RESULTS FOR ONES HEALTH ? ( LIKE CANCER PREVENTION)???
Hmm
@@sundance8623 maybe why edgar cayce says eat 3 almonds per day to prevent cancer.its one of his books but i dont know the title of it
If you could find a way to get the vacuum distillation working in a food-safe manner, this whole procedure could have been made food-safe.
What isn't food safe about the vacuum distillation???
@@EddieTheH This is a 6 year old comment dude. I don't remember this vid lmao
@@loupandsnoop Lol! Phone was rained on, thought it said days! My bad!
@NileRed I'm doing this in the lab at school but having trouble choosing the benzaldehyde layer could you help me out? How will I know?
I would love to own a custom lab coat from your merch store.
Hey do you have a idea where to buy glasware for a little home lab
lexaf LECK MICH GOOGLE Personally I'd cruise eBay first, and if you don't find anything I'd order from unitednuclear(.com), though I'm not sure if they ship outside the US/CN
Considering you have a German nickname I assume stores like unitednuclear[.]com are out of reach. Except for looking on eBay there are several interesting shops selling lab glassware, however most of them are quite expensive. One great address is handelskontor-freitag.de (has an eBay account as well). Hope it helps.
Isn't it possible to use some valve instead of the cow adapter?
Collect into a separatory funnel
There is a glass connecting adapter with PTFE stopcock you can attach between condenser the the distillation vacuum adapter. In theory you can close it down, break vacuum (the rest of the apparatus is under vacuum), replace the flask, pull vacuum and slowly and very carefully open the valve. But it is much easier to just get a cow adapter and two small flasks. It costs about the same and you save time.
I live in the US and I want to try this but I'm worried about ordering the bitter almond oil from ebay. if it is iligal to import how can they legally send it to me on ebay? Some of the bitter olmond oil on ebay is even found on th Unite3d states ready to be shipped anywhere in the US. I don't understand this.
But bassically the question boils down to can a buy it from ebay without geting arested or no?
It is not controlled or anything, but probably watched, as it is a precurser to a prescurser to a precurser of Methamphetamine.
(Benzaldehyde + Nitroethane = 2-Nitropropene + Iron Catalyst = Phenylacetone = Methamphetamine)
So as long as you dont also buy nitroethane, you should have no problems at all.
Can u make a video about Grignard's Reagent
Would a higher concentration of sodium bicarbonate solution have a higher density?
Indeed yes. Na2HCO3 is heavier than water so increasing its concetration increases mass of the solution while volume stays the same. Hence the density increases.
Why did you used sodium bicarbonate? What does it do?
2:22
It reacts with someone of the benzoic acid that might be present.
could you not have just distilled over NaOH/KOH to remove the benzoic acid?
NaOH/KOH would react with the benzaldehyde in a reaction called the Cannizzaro reaction to make benzyl alcohol!
can u made it risinine from castor beans?
Where can I buy bitter almond essential oil? That product is not on ebay now.
That was the only place I really found it.
I wonder if it is a crackdown from the FDA.
buy some almond peanut butter and apply red niles method. The cotton filter should collect little almond fragments, right?
what about from sweet almond oil? i have seen it in a pharmacy recently
No can do sir
what about the $8 stuff from walmart online is it a xrtup
what is this used for ???
Precursor to what drug
Lol you stole my idea! I though it would be a cool idea to make styrene from cinnamic acid and I've been trying it out recently.
I definitely stole your idea (somehow)
haha. I'm assuming you're going to decarboxylate the cinnamic acid? If so how are you planning on doing it? I was going to see if basic copper carbonate would work.
Nick Beck I have a procedure that uses hydroquinone as the decarboxylation catalyst.

Hey! those are great things, good for you, you might want to take on interns and hire a marketing team (if/when it's feasible, good job bro)
I hope to eventually make things around here more official. Having an intern would be awesome. That is for the future though.
I can get bitter almond oil easily from a local shop
wow normally i'm late on these
You would not be allowed to work in my laboratory with bare arms. Why are you not wearing a lab coat ?? Also a heavy walled conical flask with a tube connection side arm is a Buchner flask, not an Erlenmeyer. An Erlenmeyer has thin walls and no side arm.
next video be like: making amphetamine from benzaldehyde xD
+NileRed Do you have a drying agent attached to your vacuum pump? if you don't you will get water in the oil
Make butyric acid via diazotization and hypophosphorus acid.
can sweet almond oil be used instead of bitter almond oil?
No. Also sweet almond oil does not smell sweet like you would imagine, it smells really really bad.
GJ, i would surely buy a beaker mug :)
united nuclear style
I got 100ml of bitter almond oil from amazon for 20 dollars
I wonder if cinnamon oil contains a bit of Benzaldehyde. Also Benzaldehyde is used in producing ketamine and Vallium
Can't it be used in meth as well ?
@MrMartinswan It would take quite a bit of catalyst reaction. Wouldn't recommend it. Because there have been experiments gone wrong and many have ended up making picric acid which can be toxic and deadly, it's very unstable.
Yer you could get a like bit thar way !! But bitter almond oil would be better
@MrMartinswan not for making an illicit drug like methamphetamine. Ketamine yes but meth would be a bit more difficult and more volatile
@Ecksterphono what's best for meth then lol 😆
