Overall aspect : strictly superb ! My friend who likes steam engines for aesthetics reason will be amazed when I'll show her mine, after I have bought one. Features : cranked to 11, Hornby got the lesson. And the assembly quality looks fine. Hats off for the Dapol-like tender-locomotive coupling. Driving train : seems not let down, and Hornby-like for the best (top end quality), tender pickups of course, best of Hornby oblige. So, dynamic qualities ? In one word : Hornby, at the best sens of the brand. I just have to wait a little to buy mine, Rails of Sheffield had been looted away of this model. 250€ earmarked now for her, worth it every centime !
Hi mate I hope you are well Yes hornby qc does seem to be better. They some good features on this model. It seems to have gone down well with other people who have the model too. Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP

Steam locomotives on British railways never had "working lamps". The lamps were positioned for identifying the type of train being hauled. They were lit with oil only for night time operation. New build LMS, LNER, and SR steam locos post WW2 had electric lights fitted but were quickly abandoned as they couldn't be seen by signalmen during daylight hours. None of the 999 BR Standard steam locos were ever fitted with electric lights. Hornby's attempt to have lights on steam locos is merely a gimmick which is completely wrong from the historical perspective.
Hi mate I hope you are well It is a lovely model and some great features. Runs well too Thank you for the kind words and watching and commenting Keep safe ARP

I know zero about model locomotives, but have some idea about tooling and electro-mechanical assemblies. Given the complexity of tooling and assembly required, and the relatively small production runs over which tooling costs are amortised, I am astonished that they only cost £200.

Hi Adi, Nice positive review. Sam wasn't that happy with his badly assembled and faulty model. It still is a win or loose with Hornby concerning Quality Control and that's not acceptable. Reviews from your and other You Tube channels do have an impact so it is in their own interest that manufactures have efficient and reliable QC. Spread the word my friend ! @@AdiPullen of course, but for me, I’m not willing to spend £200+ on a loco that is known to have quality issues. Sure, there are good examples out there, and I’m glad because the Black Five is a popular loco, a do know many were looking forward to this, but personally I am more than happy to go with the slightly older model, as it is not bad by any means.
@@denishilder3124 fair enough, I have seen Adi and Peter’s reviews and both of them seem to have had better examples, I just don’t feel good spending so much money on a model though, knowing that there definitely are bad examples. Sam also gets a lot of Hornby models that are poorly assembled, or don’t work properly, and I find it very hard to believe that he would be the only one to revive bad examples. £206 plus shipping (for me to Canada) is just way too much for a loco known to have quality issues, and in all honesty it really begs the question as to why Hornby think they can price their models the way they do. Say what you like about Bachmann’s prices, but at least with their new tooled stuff you always get a model that is built well, runs like a dream, and is going to last. Sadly, I really can’t see myself buying many of Hornby’s new models, as you never get what you pay for, and this isn’t the only new model from them this year with problems, both Sam and Adi had issues with the 2MT as well…
Hi Adi There are many issues with the new Hornby Black Five it is not the accurate ultimate Black Five that Hornby claims it to be. Some very basic details are incorrect, the gap between the running plate and the boiler, bogie wheel profile, brake shoes are the incorrect type, the cab interior is the wrong colour, and the back head detail in the cab is incorrect. The lamps and cylinder relief valves are hopelessly out of scale, much of the pipe work should be black. Why have I mentioned all of this??? There is a massive amount of high quality accurate research and published information about the Black Fives, yet Hornby still gets very very basic stuff wrong this is highly frustrating. UA-cam reviewers are not covering a lot of these issues. Some may call me a rivet counter but it’s 2024 and this is a plus £200 model and Hornby have growing market competition. Please somebody do the wonderful Black Five justice in model form ACCURASCALE!!!
