this is how people were meant to live, with daily purpose and work, this is happiness and fulfillment, and we wonder why depression is so strong these days.
Facts! Everyone waste to much time chasing the all mighty dollar to try and live a life they think they want because the television told them this is how they should live.
I disagree. Very few people would be happy with his situation. Most would lose their minds, literally. Most people, nearly all, do not cope well with isolation from other people. International standards compare isolation with torture. Imagine being alone with nothing but your thoughts 6 weeks or more at a time and the monotony only broken occasionally by a copter pilot for maybe 15 minutes.
@@tarstarkusz yes, too few people fail to realise this way of life would suck for most people, no human contact is not natural, the winters must have been especially awful.

I made a comment over 3 years ago and got several responses plus lots of thumbs up 👍. Looking back I was told if you r always trying to get the perfect picture you end up missing a lot special moments. So true I have witnessed the porcupine Caribou herd over 2 seasons when stationed at Bar 1 or Komakuk Beach Dewline site along with Wolves, Grizzly Bears, Arctic Foxes, Wolverine Sandhill Cranes, Falcons, Beluga Whales and Ravens plus tons of migratory birds. Point is not a lot of pics but a lifetime of memories. Dick made movies but enjoyed priceless interactions with nature which he shared unknowingly with millions. A life well lived without worrying about 401 k, rrsp maple 🍁 beautiful scenery has no price.
My childhood was partly spent living pretty similarly to this in the Yukon Territory, at the time it didn’t seem to out of the ordinary to me it was just how we lived. We had a copy of One Mans Wilderness back then and I loved the pictures in that book as his cabin looked so cozy and I could look out our windows and see similar scenery and weather.
Dick's recordings should be made available to the public. The lessons of resolve and human spirit and coexistence with nature are too deep to keep hidden behind a paywall. There's so much potential here to reach and impact a larger audience.
Many viewers wish they could live like this. It may be better to try it more like in "Swiss Family Robinson" rather than in a place with such hostile weather conditions. Millions of people live and survive quite well in tropical or sub- tropical conditions. Few possess the skills needed to survive as this man did. My wife and I blew off city life to buy a small 13 acre hobby farm, built our infrastructure, out buildings, fences, barn and two houses all after our kids left the nest. We were 46 years old when we took this new lifestyle on. Prior to that change we lost everything we had twice including our homes. We lost one of our children (one of our twin daughters) unexpectedly at two years old. That was 38 years ago. We are nearly 65, married 46 years and retired now (finally). Never regretted any of it. We raised calves, milked cows, took care of more than two hundred chickens, grew corn, potatoes, peas, beans, blue berries, peaches, figs, apples, plums, tomatoes and other produce. We raised dogs to sell as pets, learned to raise rye grass and put up hay. We learned to can our own fig preserves and to make fantastic pickles from our cucumbers.. We learned to butcher and to heat with wood. Not much money now but we ended up with a simple and comfortable life style that is all paid for. It has always been very rewarding. We made our living online and doing many things on the side. Neither of us has had to work a 9 to 5 job since 1995. We have been free! God gets all the credit, especially for delivering us out of many hardships and close calls along the way. He provided the income and resources to buy and build out everything we own. We started with $1,600 cash and a dream. That is all we had. If you want change go for it and make the commitment. Expect a lot of new education earned the hard way because it is not as easy as it looks. Before jumping somewhere off the grid and out of the system you best try it our way. You probably will never graduate to off grid living, few succeed at that. Same takes even greater survival skills such as solar, wind and conservation measures not to mention austerity measures galore! Also if you have a spouse you better be Best friends as we are because you will be spending nearly every waking moment together! Best wishes to you as you discover your new adventure.
The Woods and the Mountains: The daughter we lost was one of our two year old twins. We miss her very much even 38 years after losing her, but she is with God and we will see her soon. We no longer grow our food, just the fruit orchard now and a little canning of preserves. Our milk cow died of old age so we no longer milk a cow or raise calves. I miss that but the work of that is huge. We still keep a few chickens for eggs only. They are all pets with names so no more butchering. My health is going downhill fast but my wife is very spry and youthful so I believe we can hang in there for a long while yet. It is wonderful to own so much land but couples wanting this lifestyle must be willing to work very hard and also be prepared for old age when infirmity sets in making the work much harder to manage. Thanks for your comment and God bless you too!

This man was so talented. I can't imagine building all the things he did and with the simplest of tools. That cabin looks as good as a prefab already made and put together. Glad he was able to live his dream and not get injured or attack by some animal.
I remember seeing the pbs show one night with Mr Proenneke and you could tell his attention to detail with everything he did. I don't think he knew what the term "it's good enough' meant it had to be done right or not at all. As far as the isolation goes I worked on the American built cold war Dewline in the Canadian arctic sector for about 10 years doing tours of 5 to 9 months with as few as 12 people operating a radar station. Summer could be nice but winter with 24 darkness could be pretty bleak when the wind was blowing at 60 knots and it was minus 55 centigrade combined minus 80 with windchill. I worked at several stations and always remember being in the Yukon which was less than 20 miles from the Alaska border on the coast of the Beaufort sea we did not see the sun for 6 weeks because we had the brooks mountain range about 10 miles behind the station. I was only in my early twenties and was told its ok to talk to yourself as long as you don't start answering because then you have become bushy and time to go back to civilization for a vacation. Not sure if people read comments but an old English mechanic I worked with was in the tail end of WW2 would say sometimes you just have to watch and take in the scenery because life is unpredictable.

Thanks so much for sharing! Such imagery and perspective. That solitude rips at a man, but sometimes we demand it. Primal sensory experience and a true need for spatial awareness. And boy the scenery 🥰
Modern video cameras show Twin Lakes to be even more beautiful- than it appears in these old video films; I can see why Proenneke loved this valley; one of God's great creations!
This is so amazing... I loved listening to the wind, waves ...reminded me of where I grew up on the St Lawrence River across from Cornwall, Ontario Canada.... Thank you for posting... lovely to hear Dick Proenneke's voice....
They made a documentary about him from beginning to end of 40 years on Twin Lakes Alaska until he came back. A real adventure story. "Alone in the Wilderness".
I absolutely love the mountains. Dick is a special type of man. I honestly don’t know that I could do what he did. We’re spoiled with the luxuries we have today and the convenience of things surrounding us. 1 day I hope to be able to build a cabin in the mountains and spend as much time as possible there.
Does he sound confused? Threatened? Sad? Angry? No he sounds ……. Get this…… happy. 100% healthy and happy. Self reliant and un-tarnished by humanity. No competition for anything from anyone. Just he and life. Meant to be.
Dick lived life on his terms. It may have been hard at times but apparently he enjoyed the solitude and living among the we wildlife He was a special type of person to live without radio, television, or phone.
All good points! Without indoor plumbing, running water, electricity, roads, etc. If he got injured he’d have to wait until the next visit from Babe. Could he 6 months. Madness! Nothing but respect for the guy.
I lived like this for 2 years when I was a youngster. Some young ppl backpack through Europe. Not me, o spend 2 years living off the land in the north. I still think of it occasionally and I must say I do miss it more as i grow older.
What a wondrous person truly inspiring, I have so much respect for this man living the life I can only dream of I watch all the videos with interpretation and love them thank you so much
This is awesome..that he even attempts to do this alone...in the wilderness..Especially in AK....so self sustainable and a true frontiersman...an true Craftman....
I thought I had seen all of the "Alone In The Wilderness" videos, until I came across this one tonight. I believe that Dick's brother did the narration on all the other videos, this is the first time I've heard Dicks' voice. I'm convinced that the series would not have been nearly as successful or pleasant to listen to, if Dick had done the narration. Sometimes I put a video on before bedtime, just for the soothing voice to take me on a wilderness fantasy.
I am finding all kinds of Dick Proenneke videos recently. They were removed a while back because of copy write rules. Great to have them all here again. YES The Narration is a Great Part of the Videos. Thanks.
Apparently he lived this life when I was a kid dreaming about the wilds of Alaska. Now that I am over 60 I see this through different eyes. I have been alone in the rugged wilderness, far from any other living soul. It can be an eerie feeling being so isolated in such unforgiving country. I think I would want some company, for a few reasons. But this gentleman seemed right at home with only the wild creatures as his companions. Quite a unique story.
I remember watching this as a child...this mans life is A National Geographic..Twin Lakes is on my bucket list!!..Mr. Proeneckies cabin is still there..I know because I researched the whole life span. It's not just a video.
Great video, what an amazing man. I would have loved to spent 12 months there Untill age of 13 I grew up in a small village in South Caucasus, a village with 15 families , no running water or electricity Almost all men had some skills in carpentry, stone masonry & other skills, Winter would be anywhere from -10 to -25 C, and our best friend in the house was our wood oven & heater All food was organic, fresh bread or lavash was made by my aunty & grandmother, home made cheese, butter, yogurt and plenty of eggs and chooks I dreamed of escaping to a modern country and life style, BUT NOW I dream only of going back to my old village and life style
Lived in remote Alaska 40 years never saw a wolverine retreat before that’s odd! They’re like the honey badger of North America they don’t give a shit at all!! Beautiful country I wish I’d lived like this much serenity and peace freedom

I saw a Bigfoot in Dec. 1973 in northern Illinois. If I never see another one that will be fine with me. My next door neighbor saw one standing in a shallow lake in Wisconsin in the early 1950s. He only told me about his sighting after he heard me talk about mine. He didn't want to seen as some kind of nut. Me, I have had many "paranormal" experiences. I don't much care what other people think. This is America. Think whatever you want to.
good guy4life taxes followed him too. Everything you buy is taxed as is fuel and property. Life will never be truly wonderful until we are with God in eternity.
@@YanksandBritsProductions Believe me, when you are living in silent solitude and work hard to survive without convenient grocery stores nearby, you too would doctor up a stew more than you realize. Ive lived like that too. Been in the Alaska bush for over 20 years now. The complete silence does something to you and you find yourself exaggerating just about everything, including eating. You learn to live with the mindset of preparing for the worst and going absolutely nuts at meal time. You want to enjoy every bite and morsel while realizing it's not a dream, but reality.
Dick built that cabin in a relatively short period of time but the cabin was 11x15 (165’). People kept chiding me that mine was taking so long to build but mine is 810’.
These videos need to be made downloadable at a reasonable price. I am a retired American living in the Philippines and the cost of shipping those videos here is cost prohibitive.
It was a wonderful life, for Mr. Proenneke, really wonderful. _(I'd sure like a little insight to the 120+ downvoter's and their mindset for it . . . there's no accounting for taste I guess!)_
WOW God Our Heavenly Father Loves His Beautiful Creation. He looked at all He created, the mountains, trees and streams of cold clear water, the momma bear and her cub, the blue jay and then He formed man and put him in this garden so He could walk and talk with him in the cool of the evening. Our Father looked and said it was good.
I only pray I could be as healthy as this man is at 70 plus I'm 47 years old and I already have major back problems and other health problems I don't see me getting nowhere near 70
Yeah. Same for me. Sarcoidosis, Brugada syndrom, degenerative disk disease, spinal stenosis, recovering from lymphoma, no way I could abandon society. Forced out of the Marines as well. Health problems suck
I have health challenges as well, but I am going to move off Grid, but only 30 minutes, no more than an hour to the closes city. And I will let the closes EMS, First Responders know were I am. I also will have a companion with me.
So glad to see rifle and handgun as equipment available in the cabin. He ought to have had the handgun [assuming 44 or 45 cal.] with him when he went out filming the bears. Also surprised he used a fireplace where most of the heat would have gone up the chimney and cold could have come down into the interior ... instead of the larger camp iron stove that radiated much more heat.
I don't think that most people can identify with the type of solitude that you would be with every single day. You see what he does and it is a very condensed and edited version of what his weeks were like. Trust me when I tell you there would be lots of downtimes. Especially in the harsh winter. It seems as if he is canoeing and wildlife filming all the time in picturesque, fall-like weather. You would have to be very comfortable being alone. I am an only child and I am not sure that I could do this. It takes a very unique person to adopt this sort of life and be content with it. I have been alone a lot in the woods and although very beautiful I am always glad to return to civilization as crazy as that sounds.
@@blainwilson7937 I have lived alone since 1997, I am 78 years old. I live a life of extreme solitude, I am a recluse, I have no living family left. I have outlived all my friends and acquaintances. My 14 year old dog died four months ago and I don’t intend to get another one. I much prefer animals to people, but do not feel I can take on another dog with all the hiking I used to do. I never had children, consequently no grandchildren. I have never been much of a people person, I am extremely self-sufficient. I am perfectly happy being alone, and I have never experienced loneliness. Of course, I’m a little bit crazy but I’m not insane.
Been there done that lol Great Lakes area up and around upstate New York. Canadian border. Freezing cold, just breathing hurts. -40f plus the windchill burrrrrr! Little bits of ice blowing in the wind like little needles. And yes we walked to school even during blizzards up hill both ways lol
Prepperjon -40 windchill is a joke. -40 then 80mph winds are a whole other thing. Power will 100% go out and you’ll live in your house with no power or heat for days.

I absolutely love the mountains. Dick is a special type of man. I honestly don’t know that I could do what he did. We’re spoiled with the luxuries we have today and the convenience of things surrounding us. 1 day I hope to be able to build a cabin in the mountains and spend as much time as possible there.
He grew up during the depression. He was in WW2. There aren't any men like him anymore.
@@ianbyron7464 So true!!!
Now we have a generation that can't change lightbulbs.
My family and I visited Dicks place, was pretty special.
I would love to see his cabin.

Inspiring! It's easy to take for granted what it took to create these films in our day and age of HD video! Pure and wonderful!

Well said !Thank you for appreciating what it did take back then ! Glad to hear you have enjoyed watching.
Bob
Does he sound confused? Threatened? Sad? Angry? No he sounds ……. Get this…… happy. 100% healthy and happy. Self reliant and un-tarnished by humanity. No competition for anything from anyone. Just he and life. Meant to be.
Dick lived life on his terms. It may have been hard at times but apparently he enjoyed the solitude and living among the we wildlife
He was a special type of person to live without radio, television, or phone.
All good points! Without indoor plumbing, running water, electricity, roads, etc. If he got injured he’d have to wait until the next visit from Babe. Could he 6 months. Madness! Nothing but respect for the guy.
Almost all of humanity have lived without a radio, phone,or television. Even in these times millions live without such things.
For someone in solitude and lacking human interaction, his mind is seemingly nimble and his character is upbeat. I enjoyed this video
I'd say he was actually much more sane than the average person is today.
@whitemaninventedeverything9511 I don't think they let regards fly planes
I lived like this for 2 years when I was a youngster. Some young ppl backpack through Europe. Not me, o spend 2 years living off the land in the north. I still think of it occasionally and I must say I do miss it more as i grow older.
All his work is so precise, it looks manufactured by precision tools, instead of by an artesians talented hands.
Absolutely love it. I was only 5 when he moved North.
so many inspirational up loaders on youtube these days but this guy is the best I think. Truley off the grid bush craft at its most pristine.
What a wondrous person truly inspiring, I have so much respect for this man living the life I can only dream of I watch all the videos with interpretation and love them thank you so much
Beautiful respect to this man love to live this life style
To Bob for posting such an awesome video and thank you for letting me purchase the two CDs from you awesome totally awesome I love all these videos
This man was the original UA-camr.
I never thought of it that way... neat! 😀
I so love the videos, of Dick's life in the wilderness!!!
I am still amused, watching this. I remember the whole documentary as a child...
This man is great in his thinking and the things he does I am amazed
Truly enjoy all his work & documentaries, please post more if you have them, thank you.
This is awesome..that he even attempts to do this alone...in the wilderness..Especially in AK....so self sustainable and a true frontiersman...an true Craftman....
Great guy to have as a hero.He is definitely one of mine.
Thanks.
First time hearing his real voice also, I didn't know that wasn't his real voice. He talks a little like Bill Cosby. Or he talks like him I think.
I noticed the voice difference immediately and wondered why it sounded so different. Your explanation could explain things!
Until recently I thought the narration was his voice
Dicks voice is not in any of the videos.
He's my hero. I have the VhS tapes from a PBS telethon 25 years ago. I will sell them for 1 million dollars. Almost priceless.
I remember watching this as a child...this mans life is A National Geographic..Twin Lakes is on my bucket list!!..Mr. Proeneckies cabin is still there..I know because I researched the whole life span. It's not just a video.
2:37 nice fireplace, that takes some real skill to build.
In another vid, he describes how raw his hands were from the home made mortar.
This man is amazing. I've watched this many times. Truly inspiring
This man is living the dream.
Not many dreamers could handle the reality of it.
Great video, what an amazing man. I would have loved to spent 12 months there
Untill age of 13 I grew up in a small village in South Caucasus, a village with 15 families , no running water or electricity
Almost all men had some skills in carpentry, stone masonry & other skills,
Winter would be anywhere from -10 to -25 C, and our best friend in the house was our wood oven & heater
All food was organic, fresh bread or lavash was made by my aunty & grandmother, home made cheese, butter, yogurt and plenty of eggs and chooks
I dreamed of escaping to a modern country and life style, BUT NOW I dream only of going back to my old village and life style
He was a amazing man. I think of him as others might think of Mr. Einstein
Lived in remote Alaska 40 years never saw a wolverine retreat before that’s odd! They’re like the honey badger of North America they don’t give a shit at all!! Beautiful country I wish I’d lived like this much serenity and peace freedom
Love these videos of Dick and his adventures , first time I’ve seen this one
God rest are soul Mr p we need such a peace n our lives I miss how things were thx
I like everything about this documentary. It's feel so down to earth where we all can relate. Wish I can say the same in 2019
Just wait till 2020

I want you all to note Dick never saw a Bigfoot after 45 years alone in remote wilderness
He must have been of sound mind and trusted in the Lord...
Too cold up there for big foot.
None he admitted to....
@@allaylan7498 he aint snitchin
I saw a Bigfoot in Dec. 1973 in northern Illinois. If I never see another one that will be fine with me. My next door neighbor saw one standing in a shallow lake in Wisconsin in the early 1950s. He only told me about his sighting after he heard me talk about mine. He didn't want to seen as some kind of nut. Me, I have had many "paranormal" experiences. I don't much care what other people think. This is America. Think whatever you want to.
Read his journals - they are great reading. Dick had a great sense of humor. I found them on kindle.
He inspired me to build a new Journey 💞 Life is beautiful

@@YanksandBritsProductions Believe me, when you are living in silent solitude and work hard to survive without convenient grocery stores nearby, you too would doctor up a stew more than you realize. Ive lived like that too. Been in the Alaska bush for over 20 years now. The complete silence does something to you and you find yourself exaggerating just about everything, including eating. You learn to live with the mindset of preparing for the worst and going absolutely nuts at meal time. You want to enjoy every bite and morsel while realizing it's not a dream, but reality.
i could of survived it with a good cigar with a shot or two of whiskey
Love all of Dicks films...wish I could have seen his homestead in person.
You still can. The park service still maintains his cabin and many of his things inside of it.
Dick built that cabin in a relatively short period of time but the cabin was 11x15 (165’). People kept chiding me that mine was taking so long to build but mine is 810’.
His skill set with an ax and basic wood tools was unparalleled.
I agree with you buddy....some people are to narrow minded tjese days
Why anyone would downvote is truely astounding....some ppl just want to watch the world burn. SMH...
Great film 🎥
“She intended to talk to me”. Dick wasn’t in a talking mood so he ran as fast as he could back to the cabin.
Dennis Boyd ..yeah, well, that’s just, like your opinion man....
Fredrick Jackson i think something bigger than that happened
It's just too bad that it didn't stay that way................
STFU.. heavenly father?
I only pray I could be as healthy as this man is at 70 plus I'm 47 years old and I already have major back problems and other health problems I don't see me getting nowhere near 70
Same here, I’m fifty years old feel like I’m 80.😭lol
Temperamentally, I could easily live alone. I have too many health problems to abandon society altogether. Just have to dream about it.
Same here my friend
I think your health is the most important thing. Money isn't everything, although it does help.☺
@@fullfire0 degenerative disc disease ,is just arthritis of the spine, its not even a real disease, atall
I believe he mentioned having his hand gun with him on one of the hikes. I too noticed the pistol in the post inside the home….
@Marc Abramsky
Most people would go mad in a few months of solitude. Scary to ponder.
That old calendar I use to see that hanging up on a wall in my dad small business shop in the late 70's when I was between 6 or 7yrs old.
