- childsplaymusic... & / childsplaymusicperth A candid review of two very mediocre playground musical instruments. These drums and tubular bells are commercial playground equipment by Megatoy. Both instruments sound bad, and in the half hour I was at the playground (which was packed with kids) no child spent more than a few seconds playing the instruments.
This doesn't surprise me - both instruments are astonishingly unmusical. My guess is that they have been designed by someone who knows nothing about musical instrument design. The tubular bells in particular suggest this: they are suspended from the very top of the tube; because of this they can't vibrate properly - they should be suspended from approximately 22% of the total length. If properly suspended they might sound OK; instead they just go "clonk" and are totally unmelodious.
Videoed at Mawson Reserve, Hillarys, Western Australia.
