  • As well as games, Archer Maclean also did freelance development work during his early #Atari days, which included developing this Oil demonstration program recovered and released today by #GTW, which was used by old British Oil company, Carless.

UPDATE: It has been revealed that the Atari UK edition did indeed sneak out back in the day (though not the Carless version), and exists in PD libraries. But has only now been accredited to Archer Maclean (however, the clue has been there all along with the AM83 credit in one of the screens!)

Wow, nostalgic! My 4th grade teacher had us play this as a competition between small groups to see who could produce the most oil. It was amazing fun and really grew my interest in geology. I never thought I'd see it again.

Ah, but this wasn't a game - it was only ever an animated demo. Perhaps you saw something similar back then?

@@GamesThatWerent Ah, I see. Weirdly similar but I suppose all graphics at that time would have to be.

@@Superkuh2 You may well have seen it - as its just come to light that it snuck out back in the day. Though the playable version you recall might be this one: www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-oil-wells_3771.html

@@GamesThatWerent @Superkuh2 There were a few games that come to mind. Another is "Oil Empire" (german name) / "Black Gold" (international) It is a business simulation but there are some 'action' sequences where you have to build a pipeline, control a fire, or drill for oil. There is also "Oil Barons" which apparently was the name for two different games, one released in 1992 and the other in 1983. I remember playing yet another game where the drilling sequences looked VERY similar to this video, at least in my memory. However, I am unsure if maybe it was just "Oil Empire" running in a graphics mode with limited colors.

@@knorker Oil Imperium (by ReLine) and Black Gold (by Starbyte) are two different games, one is about oil drilling and the other about coal mining.

Tom Snyder on the "Tomorrow" late night talk show used the Atari 8-bit program/game Scram! to demonstrate what happened during the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant accident.

Yes, but how many democracies had to be knocked over to extract these resources? Or wait... is this not a wargame? Oh, poo...
