Sohyang is a 44 year old South Korean gospel singer. She is a cancer survivor, vocal coach, song writer and author. She remains an independent artist due to her health and her faith. She can sing any genre she puts her mind to including rock, rap, and jazz. Her main goal is to bring comfort and joy to her listeners. She is well known to those in the business like Seth Riggs, Kirk Franklin, and Michael Bolton called her a virtuoso. Yet she remains little known to the general public in the west. Mostly she spreads just like this via UA-cam reactions. She sings in both English and Korean, sometimes both in one song, she even has a couple of Chinese covers. When reacting to a Korean song it is best to use Vimeo clips rather than UA-cam, as Vimeo tends to have more English subtitles.
Do be careful of blocks and copyright strikes, Korean broadcasters can be tough, pays to use a filter.

Now you have come upon So Hyang, who to many, is simply the best female singer on earth. She brings with her a multitude of vocal tools and emotional translations. She can sing anything from gospel to jazz. Her version of 'I Have Nothing' from the DMC Festival, her in a dark blue dress, is more than tremendous. She sings incredibly in Korean, of course, or English as well, and most songs have subtitles if you look for them. She is incomparable and can sit at the table with all of the greatest singers which is amazing considering she never thought she would be a singer when she was young and even almost gave it up at one point. She is a cancer survivor, a church singer, a person who has not sought fame but to comfort with her voice. David Foster (record producer/composer for Whitney Houston among others) wanted to sign her. A warning, you must filter her videos as many (not all) are blocked for copyright issues. But it will be worth it for you to hear her. 'Everyone' is considered a masterpiece, and 'Misty' from the Begin Again Concert is remarkable and completely different. There are many, many songs to choose from which are gold. Great reaction. I have been reading some things about her in the comments and she seems like an incredible person who I want to learn more about. As for the singing this was just amazing and a performance that I have watched quite a lot since reacting to it. When it comes to singer preference she seems to tick every box for me and seeing the I Have Nothing in this comment as got me just as excited as when I did Bridge Over Troubled Water. she is one of a trifecta of singers that can do whitney houston justice, imo, the others being the great katrina velarde (please don't let her amazing talent get lost in the sea of new stuff; she's worth coming back to, repeatedly), & last but certainly not least, glennis grace.

We all wonder if Sohyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!

She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ua-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/v-deo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 44 on April 5, 2022, though in Korean culture she would be 45 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international attention from the performances being posted on UA-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on UA-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted Sohyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for some of her songs, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places Sohyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview Sohyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via UA-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
Sohyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소향--Sohyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. Sohyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. Yet for the definitive answer Sohyang has stated in an interview that her name means "enjoy the light." Her grandmother named her.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer Sohyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. In addition, she is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has an outgoing and bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, Sohyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, Sohyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people Sohyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

Her name is pronounced So Young and as a professional studio and touring audio engineer she is one of the best vocalists I have ever heard. @@Dazza010 I actually did a deep dive into her story when I discovered her a few months ago. She is a cancer survivor and had battles with pneumonia for several years. During that time she says she took a close look at her life and decided to devote her talent to giving comfort to those in tough times through her voice. She has an amazing connection with her audience as you can see when the cameras pan to their expressions. I also highly recommend "Arirang Alone" and "Everyone". Both show her brilliance and vocal talent.

Some singers are a one hit wonder. In Sohyang case, all her songs are a wonder, and you will constantly be shooked by her headvoice, her belts, her extremely long note, etc.

I don't know much about So Hyang other than she blew my mind with this graceful and powerful performance. It was well put together from the background changing, the cameras going from full body to close focus, the orchestra following her changes to a perfect interpretation of the song and vocal performance. Your reaction the first time listening to her singing is also my reaction! I first heard about this woman back in 2017. Haven't stopped listening to her ever since. Whenever I feel down, she brought so much soul everytime I listen to her that I feel energized and get my hopes up.
Many of her legion of fans (me included), believe she is the best female singer on the planet for the last decade. Other than her pure vocal skills, which took several decades to perfect, is her emotional connection with her listeners. She is as famous as she wants to be because of her personal beliefs. Since you aren't familiar with Korean artists in the UK, let me share a couple with exceptional skills and performances. First "AILEE". She is actually a Korean-American that returned to Korea to have a singing career. Known as the "Golden Voice" of Kpop, she has a strong voice similarly powerful like Sohyang, I would recommend typing in "Ailee immortal Songs 2, Georgia on my mind" and watch the KBS world TV version" My Second recommendation would be "SONG SOHEE." She sings in an old Korean country style called Gugok. The song I recommend is "Song Sohee Immortal songs 2, "Tearful Dooman River" on the UA-cam channel of KBS Kpop. The song is about a woman who's love was killed by the Japanese during the occupation. She had been waiting by the river for his return when she got the news. She takes off her shoes before sitting down. This symbolizes that she will join her loved one by going into the river for a ritual taking of her own life. The shoes are left as a mark of her passing and devotion. Also to not take any dirt into the next world. Her rendition can bring tears from a rock. You can thank me later.

Everyone is her masterpiece. She's only done it once as far as I can tell because it was so hard to sing. The VIMEO version has English subs WHICH YOU WILL WANT and regret if you don't have them. Her story is amazing. She could have any record contract she wants but she chooses to refuse and to sing to raise the spirits of people who are suffering and to sing for her church and the glory of God. She is a cancer survivor, a successful science fiction writer and she survived getting hepatitis from a blood transfusion. She's amazing. Her cover of I Have Nothing, the live version of course, is just stunning but so is everything she does. She respects Mariah's version but makes it her own as well.

If Daz Reacts wants to compare how female sopranos and male tenors sing on Broadway and in movies with how they sing in operas he might want to look at the UA-cam videos entitled "Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort-Balcony Scene (Tonight)(From 'West Side Story')" which shows the Broadway version and "PLACIDO DOMINGO-ANA MARIA MARTINEZ-'TONIGHT' Duet-UA-cam" which shows the operatic version complete with the "bellowing tenor" who is the famous Spanish tenor Placido Domingo. Tenors say they have to bellow to keep from being overpowered by the top operatic sopranos. ANA MARIA MARTINEZ is the best Puerto Rican singer who ever sang the part of Maria who is supposed to be Puerto Rican in the musical. Rachel Zegler is of Polish and Columbian heritage.
