  • In the mid-1990s, Western Pacific Airlines, a short-lived US carrier, made a significant mark in aviation history with its unique and colorful liveries. Among these, the most iconic was the Boeing 737-300 adorned with characters from the beloved animated sitcom, The Simpsons.
Western Pacific Airlines was founded in 1994 and began operations in April 1995. Just two months later, the airline received a Boeing 737-300, registered as N949WP. This aircraft had previously served Piedmont Airlines and USAir before joining Western Pacific’s fleet. In a creative marketing move, Western Pacific teamed up with FOX TV to transform N949WP into a flying billboard for The Simpsons.
The Simpsons-themed livery was a vibrant and eye-catching design. The aircraft was painted in a bright yellow hue, reminiscent of the characters’ skin tones. The fuselage featured Bart, Homer, Maggie, and Lisa, while Marge, with her iconic tall blue hair, was placed on the tail. The engines displayed the FOX logo in blue and yellow, completing the playful and distinctive look.
The Simpsons plane quickly became a favorite among aviation enthusiasts and the general public alike. Its unique design and connection to a popular TV show gave it widespread appeal. However, despite its popularity, the aircraft’s time with Western Pacific was short-lived. The airline declared bankruptcy in February 1998, and the Simpsons plane was subsequently acquired by Southwest Airlines, where it was re-registered as N660SW.
The aircraft continued to serve Southwest Airlines until July 2016, marking its longest tenure with a single carrier. After more than 31 years of service, the Boeing 737-300 was retired, having accumulated over 91,000 flight hours across nearly 69,000 cycles. Today, the legacy of the Simpsons plane lives on in model form and in the memories of those who saw it grace the skies.
Western Pacific Airlines may have been short-lived, but its creative marketing strategies, particularly the Simpsons-liveried Boeing 737, left a lasting impression in the world of aviation.
