@@ichoosemysanity6467 I don't know if this is still the case, but back in the old days, there were schools that rescinded scholarships of athletes when they were no longer on the team. I think the initial solution is easy--structure the players compensation the same way some schools structure coach's salaries. Don't pay them for playing the game, but let them make money on all the ancillary deals (endorsements, etc).
the solution is simple: put the athletes on work-study and pay them like any other student who works for the school. this would also make them eligible for workman's comp and obligate the schools to take care of them medically.
And what type of work would they be performing for low wages? Teaching assistant model is a different model. We are talking a billion dollar March Madness industry alone, with coaches getting millions, and the players getting none of the pie?.
That free education line is bullshit. whenever most of these students can't pursue extra curricular activities outside of football they don't have the time to advance their degrees as they would a normal student. Education is a valuable asset but it doesn't take care of the immediate needs most of these college athletes face. many want to support their families and they can't pick up a job because they have no time. Just ask Jalen rose about it. I'm not saying they should be signing contracts and being paid to actually play. But I do advocate that they should collect revenue from Jersey sales and be able to collect money by attending football camps and even speaking if they are invited to do so. And you know what if they're offered money and gifts from boosters. Who the hell cares?
Bull shit they don't have enough time. They could work 2 hrs a day 7 days a week at a $10 an hour work study and make $500 a month. Thats plenty of money to pay for what ever they need to pay for. Its all about time management, but lets face it 18 year old kids suck at time management. So what ever financial issues they find themselves in while in college they got in by their own doing. They practice what 40 hours a week? Shit I know people that work dual jobs 80 hours a week just to pay for school, food, rent, phone, internet, utility (all things most of these athletes don't need to worry about) and still have enough time to study and get good grades in class. So don't try to say they don't have enough time because thats bull shit. 2 hours a day plus lets say 6 hours of practice a day. That leaves 16 hours to study or sleep or do what ever the hell they want to do with those 16 hours. That is plenty of time to study, get an A on that western civ final, and still get a full 8 hours of sleep every single day. Don't have enough time, please. Shit I know guys that finished full college semesters while deployed over seas and you wanna tell me these kids don't have time to study and work 2 measly hours a day on top of practice, what a joke.
R Nordy what about travel time to and from practice, to and from work, time that you're getting ready for the day, getting ready for practice, actually attending classes (not just homework and studying) I feel like with all of this considered it would give them about 9 hours left in their day to study and sleep .. if they're taking 12-15 credits that's got to be 2-3 hours of homework and studying nightly. Doesn't leave time for any type of social life either. Almost no time, for anything else.
it really is that simple. Like humans often do, we create grey area where there IS none. Who wants to work a job where the employer says, ok we'll give you something to eat as payment....while the employer is making millions every year? Kind of like people who ask pro musicians to play for free lol.
I had a thought about the statement, "We are paying our student athletes with education." Let's say that you have a job. A job you love, a job that you're great at, but still it's a job, and you want to be paid. Your employer is happy to pay you - in manure. When you ask why they are giving you manure, they explain, "This is just as valuable as money. You can use it to fertilize a field, then plant some seeds, weed and till the land, hope for good weather, and after all that work, reap a fine crop to support your family." The metaphor breaks down in that you can turn around and sell the manure for some kind of financial gain. There is no guarantee that you can "sell" your education. I do not mean to imply by the scenario above that I am of the opinion that all student athletes should be extravagantly paid, or even paid at all. I'm just stating that in almost every situation where I perform a service for an outside party, I would expect my compensation to be something of tangible or financial value. I would even go so far as to say that I think that expectation is shared by a great many people. I'm also not saying that education isn't valuable. Many people see the value in a higher education, and hence, colleges exist. I am saying that education in itself cannot be so easily substituted for actual financial compensation, and that it's somewhat misleading to suggest otherwise.
It doesn't pay for meals they should at least get them a card that is just for Food at least that has a fair amount of money that would help them during the weeks , then when they go on road trips some don't have money and they have to play on a empty stomach or eat off a team mates money because everyone trips over coaches helping players out with money or getting them food , kids don't have a lot when they get to that stage some don't even have a stable house hold to get a reliable source of food
Too few athletes actually make it pro (roughly 2%). If they think this is a realstic career path then that's their mistake. Everybody else is betting on themselves without a guarentee to get a job with their degree, and when they fail they still have to pay the Piper. Athletes should be no exception. Plus they don't have to pay for education, this saves them from $30,000 a year everyone else has to pay. Getting a shot for the pros and a free pass on the cost of college is more than enough of a reward. NOTE: If college was free for all students, then yes I think student athletes should make money on their likeness. Realize it is unfair, yet this is the MOST fair scenario we have available as of yet.
@@dillon5866 the current model is based on the market value of an individual athete at a given time. Like any other enterprise or job seeker, they have a right to test that.
Have you seen ticket prices to a prime time College ffootball game FSU vs UF or Bama vs UGA? Those tickets are 150 upwards to 3 grand! Those stadiums holds atleast 76k plus
None of these college athletes, especially NCAA players, should play at all unless an agreement is met where these athletes receive a piece of these multi-billion dollar industry's pie! Straight up. It's absolutely absurd these kids are plucked from their hometowns to generate massive levels of wealth for these corporations, schools, coaches, etc., when less than 1% of whom ever go pro; and with their great sacrifices, when all is said and done, they go home penniless. There should be a sort of "trust fund" set up for all of these revenue generating players to receive after their college careers are over. The better the team (the ones who generate most by going furthest) the larger the fund. Period.
Kaiges Claiborne No the college get's money from all the students who are not athletes. If all the students that don't play sports stopped going to school tomorrow ever last college wold be broke. Me and ever other student who is not an athlete spends more money to keep the colleges going then the sports.
@Michelle Appiah They bring more students to a school. Lets say I am 5'10 185 playing RB and I get 3 yards a carry my team goes 5-7 every year we will only have about 10,000 students at our school and tuition is like 20k a year. There's another RB 6'1 235 his team is 10-2 and his college has 40,000 students many came just to see him play or be near him. Tuition is 30,000 per year there. He brought his school an extra 300 million bucks annually just off FACT of people from 1000 miles away are paying 10 k extra a year to see him play. Also in college he is more likely to catch a false rape charge and doesn't have the money to protect himself it's a fxcking disgrace and 95% he's Black so the false rape allegations are a 20% chance sometimes the athletes do actually do the crime but I am just saying its a bad situation.
if the student athletes did receive a good education I can understand not paying them because they have something to fall back on. but they don't get a good education because they are spending all their time playing their respective sport and teachers let them slide on their work and some make up grades and classes so they can play.
Speaking from experience. I hardly slept due to field of study I entered and playing soccer at a D1 school. I was a walk on, but I made the first team after my red shirt year. I played for 5 years and all I received was a partial scholarship that would sometimes cover books or meals. I played for what Vance says, "love of the game." I hardly slept due to the playing schedule and the school work I had. These people have no idea of what a student athlete goes through. I had some fellow teammates that struggle a lot as I did to either eat or pay for books. I agree that athletes should get either have their complete schooling played for or pay them.
most FT students, even those with aid, work PT or more to make ends meet. College soccer is not a revenue sport, so its no surprise they have limited free rides. "Paying" students is based on the market value of the individual.
1:51 "She does not want us to be paying student athletes". That immediately lost the debate for them. It's THE PLAYERS that are paying THESE COLUMNISTS to talk about college sports. The players fuel college sports, that give columnists things to write about, and now these power-confused individuals think they are entitled to say the people that pay them, shouldn't be paid? This is mind-boggling. Also Christine's fake smile is so infuriating to look at. Her argument against paying student athletes is (paraphrasing): NCAA would have to pay players with market value, worker's compensation, and insurance. [Ok, cool. She's basically stating what Kareem is advocating, to treat NCAA as an ECONOMICALLY modeled professional corporation. She's listing those effects negatively, but it is exactly what the opposing side is proposing. So she doesn't make a logical conclusion here.] "There's not a university president that wants to get into that." So basically she's saying the people that are leeching money off players don't want to do it, so it's completely justified to not pay athletes. OF COURSE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS DON'T WANT TO DO IT. She admits that NCAA is hypocritical yet immediately follows that by stating this is the best system we have? Are you serious? If you think someone is hypocritical, it implies you feel there is a BETTER option to view/handle an issue. You don't say someone is hypocritical, but say "it's ok because it's the best they can do". Either don't call them hypocritical and stay consistent to your claims, or just admit you might not have thought things through completely. And her final point is players need that time to mature for the game in college (claiming athletes aren't all LeBron James). That is a valid point... wait a second... HOW DOES THAT RELATE TO PLAYERS GETTING PAID OR NOT? It doesn't. Players can treasure time in college and still be rightfully paid what they deserve. She goes off topic. The fact she keeps reaching for her coffee, smiling and nodding her head throughout this video just makes me question her credibility and status as a spokesperson for this "debate".
Also the college columnist could just write about the pros and if there isnt college its called going highschool to pros. Also players if they are good enough and have enough equity with the team workout deals with the team where the team pays for the players college education when they decide to go back Most players in MLB that are latin or from foreign countries dont even go to college and just get drafted from HS. And if a player is good enough in College (which most arent) the university will keep them on scholarship. Ex. Marcus Lattimore
"It's the players that are paying these columnists to talk about college sports" How is that possible if they're not getting paid??????????????? Maybe the dumbest thing I've ever read and she's been covering every sport for over 30 years GTFOH
hahyunlee No the players dont pay them. They will just write about and talk about pro sports olympics or high school lol. College players are still student athletes they WANT to be seen as pros but they are not.
hahyunlee WELL SPOKEN!!! I'm in 6th grade and we have to debate the topic "Should college athletes get pair or not" so I looked up this video so I can take notes for the debate tomorrow. I finished this video with some really good notes and I decided to stroll through the comments and see what people said before going to the next video (part 2, if u will) and I saw yours and it caught my eye. I read it and it made me think about a lot of stuff I didn't think of before, and a lot if it made a lot of sense. Thank you so much for posting your opinion. I will remember it if I need it. Thx😜👌👍
I say they should be paid. They’re bringing in a lot of income for the school by providing entertainment, and business for snack stands (if they have any). They should get some money for this
Most student-athletes tend to come from poorer parts of the country in which their families cannot afford to pay tuition at any division 1 or division 2 school. The kids coming out of these place are looking to make money off of their biggest talent...sports. And at instances they have to choose between continuing their education or foregoing college to enter the draft in search of those millions of dollars to rescue their family. By allowing students to be paid and market themselves freely without any rules you allow the student athlete some motivation to continue at college.
+Robert Loves Arsenal What happens with the students that spend their money on drugs and More athletes will be kicked off. Which will relate to more gang related violence and only 1% of college football players go on to play for NFL. Also what if a student wants to holdout because they want more money. Can the Group of 5 teams be restricted to get recruits by only being able to offer little money since the budget is different.
Robert Loves Arsenal But they are choosing to. May e they should accept reality and just stay the fuck in school and find a good job stop chasing big money. Your not lebron your not kd your not jordan. The odds are stacked against you to make it pro soif you know that why you putting all your eggs in that basket? Because you believe your owed because you can play sports? Sorry there are tons of kids who are willing to play just to play.
@wholly33 Exactly chances are he isn't an athlete. Getting exploited is never good for anyone. Why don't they give movie actors free housing and food instead of money?
No, because then all they’re are focused on that paycheck that they will only be getting for 4 years tops and not an actual education. The vast minority of college athletes actually make it to the NBA or NFL or something like that so chances are they’re gonna have to fend for themselves in the real world and because they were only focused on that short term paycheck they waisted their colleges years and have no clue what to do with the degree, that is even if they do well enough in classes to get one
This utter BS if I am Floyd Mayweather I make 100 million a fight Adrien Broner makes like 500 thousand a fight how come everything is not "equal"? We all know why Money Mayweather gets so much money but why are these athletes getting screwed?
Kareem is 100% right.. Everyone doesn't get a trophy.. Nothing against field hockey and all of the other sports. I have allot of respect for all sports. However what it comes down to is the money.. And where the money goes is where it should stay..
Let's be clear. These big name colleges are not recruiting the students to attend their schools for the educational benefits. They are bringing them in for their athletic talents and are making millions off these kids. You can argue the fact that they are also there to get an education, but put the reality glasses on for just a few minutes. They CANT get educated properly when they have to spend 70% of their time on the football field instead of the classroom or study hall. And these professors are being forced by the universities to pass these players in their classes just to keep them eligible to play! So what type of real education are they receiving? Again, they are there to one reason and one reason only, to play sports. And if the school and the NCAA are gonna make billions off these kids, then at least pay them. Just utilize your filthy high-priced lawyers to work out all the BS legal stuff.
kdeezo326 yes I agree (I'm in 6th grade taking notes for a debate tomorrow on this exact subject), and plus they get a education but are put in easy classes , so A. that leads to a meaningless degree and B. they're not really getting and education if they don't know, or aren't actually learning the things they got the (worthless) degree on.
I played baseball for Northern Illinois from 1969 thru 1973. Varsity players back then were paid, not so much with cash (there was pretty good cash for making sure the sprinklers went on and off at the field and a few other "jobs".), but with other perks such as a running charge account to the University at one of the local tailoring shops, free rental cars, and many others at local businesses, especially businesses located on campus. Sports programs were pretty small time at Northern. Back then you were there primarily for an education. I can't imagine what some players at big time schools were getting then or now.
Shame on Chris and Von for attempting to blocking student athete opportunities. Newsflash; NIL involves 3rd parties, Title 9 does not apply! Respect Kareem for speaking up.
Stop saying " the players get paid with a scholarship". At the University of Alabama that scholarship is worth about 60,000 bucks. The school makes millions. Nick Saban makes 10 million. Why isn't he only making 60,000. Why is there no uproar when a coach makes big bucks, but the minute you start talking about giving these athletes the dollars they are creating, people start freaking out. A lot has to do with who's doing the reporting, who's writing the article and who's actually doing the complaining. I think you'll find they are all the same TYPE of person.
Let's say Van Jones or that woman...all of a sudden the company that they work for creates billions of dollars but their salary is capped, no increase in pay. How would they feel? Others are making a ton of money but they are not.
You need to pay these athletes PERIOD !!! UOFM Football Brings in 1 billion dollars a year.... tell me why in the hell these students don’t get a kick back from what they brought in ?
In addition. not every student playing sports gets a scholarship. If the players who did not receive scholarship stop playing there be no team. It's a job. simple at that.
It's the other way around, it's the other 99% of the students who don't play sports; if they stopped paying money out of their own pocket or getting loans to go to school, if THEY stopped going to class, there would be no school, comprende?
Her’s the thing 40% of these kids for whatever reason don’t graduate so don’t give me that education payment bs for me don’t give them a salary but a stipend so they have what they need and Honor full scholarships for all four years plus medical problems and athletes should not be punished for gifts or other areas of payment
Hold on. The athletes ARE paid. They get an education worth 100k-300k-market price. There is risk, students are broke, what else is new? Schools don't know which athletes are going to rise to top-that's 1 out of 100 at best. Schools pay athletes in many sports-the price of tuition, lodging, meals, healthcare, books, tutors, etc. Somebody please fill me in on this point.
6:10 Schools purposely aim to not turn a profit. The reason for this is as an institution your goal should never be to earn money for yourself its always about the students. It's not good for the schools image if they're making all these millions of dollars profit because then people will want to know where the money is going. It just looks bad for business. So to "hide" all the money they make they immediately spend it on top of the line facilities and arenas, and coaches. Go and look at some these top college locker rooms and training centers. You'll see where that money is going.
Minimum “walk on” employee age NFL/NBA Teams hired at 16 and attending community college/post secondary classes at the same time while receiving compensation.
Most people who say these athletes shouldn't get paid, obviously never played any major sports in college. Any real college athlete knows that "free education" argument is pure BS. People who are attending these schools on athletic scholarships are there for ONE reason and ONE reason ONLY....to play sports. Most of these kids bearely made through high school academically, but the colleges see an opportunity to make money off their sport talent. And when you attend a college on an athletic scholarship, majority of your time is spent practicing/preparing your craft. Academics is the last thing on the list. Just research the UNC "paper classes" and you'll see how the schools get around that "GPA eligibility" hurdle. And this is common practice in many schools. Pay these athletes and stop with the BS.
kdeezo326 you're their to get an education your pay is a college degree and if your good enough your pay can also be a chance to make the pros no college athlete should be paid
@@rcracer8872 Ridiculous how can they study when they are always practicing and 80% of athletes don't get scholarships to play sports. Very few of them get academic scholarships I am sure.
? They are... They go to school for free. That's the better part of $100k in most circumstances. $25k a year without a college degree; they get paid more than most police.
jaquan541 No, they'd go broke without education. Sports are worth NOTHING compared to the millions upon millions students bring in for tuition. Let's put aside the debate about who works harder and assume that running 10 miles a week for $100k of free school is REALLY REALLY hard... the profit from this $4 billion industry should go toward alleviating the $43.5 billion in annual tuition payments. By the way, I thought you implied that sports brought in more revenue than education... Which one is a bigger number? $4 or $43.5 billion?
Sooo her arguement is title ix shouldn’t it be proportional to what ur making there could be a way to pay players fairly and equally maybe some sort of fund to care for you if you leave college and don’t go pro and pay proportional to how well your team did. Same as social security
College athletes should be paid, or there should at least be a stipend set aside for them. People who attend college on art scholarships or music scholarships are allowed perform for money or get their work featured, yet student athletes are barred from earning money unless they get jobs, which they usually don't have the time for. On top of that, you can't tell me that it's fair when universities, coaches, the NCAA (a "non-profit" organization), broadcasting companies, and a variety of private corporations all profit off of student athletes, yet they go out and train, attend class, perform, risk getting injured (which in some cases may lead to the rescinding of their scholarships) and see no money from it whatsoever. I'm not saying offer them the equivalent of a professional contract, but they deserve something.
I actually think college athletes should be paid because if a student gets like a part time job, they're able to make some money to provide for themselves. But a college athlete has to train, perform, study and etc. They wouldn't find time to get a job when they have to train.
jaquan541 so that's an excuse for them to get paid? while every other average human pays an arm and a leg, these athletes don't pay a single penny to go to college
Captain Random Regular student can get work study jobs. Student athletes can. All the money that the NCAA gets is from student athletes. They are paying the tuition for everybody. You must be a dumbass to Think everybody on a team has a full ride
no no and no again - if they allow it - high-school ball-players will then sign agents to represent them or parents will decide to whomever is the highest bidder.....then it takes the reason of commitment and the fundamentals of analyzing what coach fits my game, examining what program has the kind of players I would like to play with and what if a player gets his money before his commitment/ then he gets hurt? what protection or legal binding laws that will protect his contract - players that are not professional in their craft do not get the right to choose how much and what kind of money they deserve if they have not produced before. If WE LOOK AT THE ARMY no 18 or 19 year old becomes a sergeant his 1st tour of duty or during his initiation into the FORCES. He must dutifully earn his stripes and can you imagine having a soldier that is ill-equipped or prepared in [protecting our freedom].
The funniest part about this is that all players on the football teams and basketball team isn't on scholarship. Almost half of theses football teams are not on scholarship but yet are still on TV and video games and get their jerseys sales. What About those guys. I'm sorry but I think they got the wrong person advocating for of the athletes because that is a huge point that is missed. All College Programs have a set amount of scholarships that they can give to the athletes and the rest of the ones that's on the team aren't on scholarship and is being exploited.
This was posted over 8 years ago as im writing. College athletes should not be paid or bribed into joining a school. The student should choose the school that best fits them that will accept them. Also its way less of an achievement to do good in school and perform well for your team. The feeling will never be the same. When they are not getting paid they are way more determined to make it to the next level into the professionals. With the money some of these athletes make, why go pro when you have already made millions? You need to earn the right to make money and in my opinion only the ones that make it to professional should get money for playing.
The "Love and Passion" argument is stupid, because those that espouse it refuse to live by it. The government would run much better if politicians did it for the "Passion and Love" for the job. Sports Commentating would be so much more enjoyable and would garner greater audience, if the hosts and panels did it for the "Passion and Love". Find me a politician or sports commentator willing to forfeit their pay.
Why law suits? You get paid proportionally to what you bring in .. if you don’t like it, let’s just cancel the athletic programs that are not profitable
Absolutely not!!!! Never!!!! Should Bio Medical Engineers get paid in College?? What's the difference, when they create a new medicine doesn't the school prosper???? No the shouldn't!!!
Anyone who argues them not getting paid doesn’t understand that they themselves aren’t worth what the athletes are worth. Your value as a human being is equal but not in economic value. Sorry if that upsets you but you don’t generate millions of dollars like the athletes do.
We just witnessed the issue that this’ll always be an ongoing “discussion” they were all shutting him down or avoiding his points, cause they were aimed towards actually aiming towards fixing it. Kareem is the only person there with his own money, and not company property so he’s the only one trying to discuss issues and making equal If not more significant examples of needed attention. And every single one of those people, went straight into their employees handbook and went into their call center scripts. What I thought was gunna be a discussion was clearly revealed to be more of the very same bs that’s done to keep players without a paycheck. Like the killing of Julius Cesar they all took a stab at him for trying to broadcast issues that are genuinely controversial. They wouldn’t even acknowledge that he had said something that was terribly tragic & somewhat of a whistleblow, but it’s out there, just buried so not brought up or considered. Kareem’s just keeping it real, and it made these people turn into corporate policy robots short circuiting. Trying to defend the gross reality of college football. They in the game for profits, it’s a business so empathy isnt a priority but it’s clearly mentioned that they make sure their players get the full scholarship along with clothing and food plans so they can get be their best on and off the field blah blah blah. Or they donate chump change to cancer society’s they or their wife swap neither or founded. It’s all about addressing the reality of the situation. They big corporations, they’re wheeling dealing lobbyists on Capitol Hill, they’re big pharma, same shit just a different shovel.
Van Jones, student athletes should be represented by attorneys and paid. Pay into an Escrow account to be drawn on after graduation or if drafted before. If not graduating or drafted by a professional team, to be redeemed after 10 years.
I think that College athletes should be paid because all these athletes put their bodies at risk and sometimes when they get injured they have to pay for it. Furthermore, these athletes work on their sport just like a job. It makes it hard for athletes to balance school and their sport. In addition, there are many students who have a scholarship at school like Duke. I actually did a podcast on this so please check it out. Apple: King Kumar’s Podcast: Why College Athletes should be paid on Apple Podcasts Anchor: Why College Athletes should be paid by King Kumar’s Podcast • A podcast on Anchor Spotify: King Kumar’s Podcast
Kareem is a little off topic. An Athlete getting and losing a scholarship for an injury is entirely different topic. The discussion is about Athlete compensation and not a student losing his scholarship.
there is enough money to pay football and basketball players and still fund minor sports. Soccer doesn't make any money, if you were a top level soccer player you wouldn't be playing in the NCAA, you'd be playing in the pro leagues and getting paid! Title 9 has single handedly ruined minor male collegiate sports. Women is extremely out of touch and wants to speak with a few athletes and then see how she feels.
How about you just don’t STOP the athletes from making money. If they want to sell a signed football, or do a advertising deal, let them... don’t suspend or expel them.
How are these kids supposed to obtain an income? They have to support themselves clothes, food, etc. They can't get a part time job because it's school & sport's. $600 a week plus benefits is fair enough more than fair, compared to what everyone around them is making. They can even get hurt then what?
you've obviously either never gone to college or never received a scholarship. when you're on a full scholarship some of the money is also to help pay for books, housing, and other shit. a lot of students also get loans. if the athletes think they're too good for loans, then they need a slap in the face. their student athletes. STUDENT athletes. and if they get hurt, believe me, if the kid is a star they will make damn sure he heals
Gator yeah I haven't went to college nor did I receive a scholarship but what does that have to do with anything and I'm guessing you never had to struggle to see my point of view? I know what a scholarship is but even that isn't enough, I know people who have a full scholarship yet they still have a part time job because they still need to support themselves financially. The fact is these students need to get paid some how in some way, they risk way too much for these university's.
bro_mackin those struggles aren't exclusive to athletes. and my point about haven't gone to college or receiving a scholarship is to imply that I am currently a student with a scholarship. one university offered to pay my full tuition plus and extra $5000 each semester to defer the cost of books, housing, etc. so athletes probably get something like that as well. and no I haven't struggled much because I manage my money pretty well, spending only on what I need, and borrowing only when I need to and knowing I can pay it back.
bro_mackin you just basically answered you're own question. Playing sports while going to an academic institution and learning is a privilege...unfortunately many people cant even afford both Remember these are students first not athletes first. If we reverse it then it devalues colleges and universities and a degree is basically worthless
Gator the struggles of an student athlete and a regular student are completely different, being a med student for example offers absolutely no risk of physical injury unlike in amateur sports like football as an example where career ending and sometimes even life altering injurys can occur, what do these atheletes do then. And a lot of schools only offer yearly renewable scholarships so there is no guarantee that you will be compensated for all 4 years, the school may decide to drop a player. Other students also are offered coop paid work terms and are allowed to work atheletes due to their schedule and ncaa rules aren't even allowed to work during the summer. The amount of money the schools make of these individuals including ticket sales and merchandise include player specific items like jerseys, bobble heads, posters etc.. with that said players name and likeness on it, but then their not allowed to recive any money from those sale....ironic. These schools are making millions to sometime billions of dollars of profit of the play and handwork of these athletes and these so called gracious scholarships are a minuscule fraction of whats really being being made. Fans go to see the players perform not the head director of athletics, so pay them or make these people benefiting of the kids to take a pay cut.
I know I’m going to get hate and I personally don’t care but here’s my saying why they shouldn’t get paid. 1. A good chunk of these athletes get some form of scholarship so that should be their form of money while other students who aren’t athletes and don’t get scholarships have to deal with loans for 20 years of their life after college. 2. College sports is like any school sport, it’s an extra curricular activity, it’s not required. 3. Professional sports are jobs, college sports aren’t. So if it’s not a job, it’s a volunteer type thing. Not only that, they would have to pay every athlete money and the same amount because if they don’t, then more uproar would occur. Lastly, would you rather have good facilities coaches and a great stadium to play in and not make money, or make money and get crappy facilities. Lower income schools would go bankrupt if this would happen and that would lower education levels because of cheaper schools shutting down.
Collage sports are slowly dying, I wouldn’t be surprised if top recruits skip college entirely and go play in a lower skilled league before they go to the NBA/NFL. It’s happening rn with Mello Ball who skipped college and was still a top 5 draft pick.
The day college athletes get paid is the day I stop going to games. They already get paid in the form of a free education. They will never have to deal with student loans or forgiveness programs, etc. You're telling me that a kid who rides the bench 95% of the season needs to get paid? What a joke....
nfl and nba teams allowed to hire teens in high school or college ie In house development ie the floor mop practice guy and the juice bar gym assistant ie nfl and or nba ready day one..
Theres around 138,000 Sports Scholarships in Division 1 and 2. less then 30k of that number are the Football and Basketball programs. She is 100% right because of Title 9 they would have to pay those other 100k+ Students OR disband those programs so now while your hurting kids who depend on these scholarships.
I mean "taxation without representation" was enough to start a war. How about "money is made, let me be paid". The woman's argument is pathetic. Its the same argument women's sports make. Also the fact that an injury will cause a student to be discarded like a broken appliance is disgusting!!!!
This lady lives in lalaland. Her examples are out of reality. If a student gets hurt, he's done. How can that be fair? Their scholarships should be guaranteed. It's exploitation plain and simple.
You start paying athletes I bet you my last dollar there grades will start looking better then what they do now . An actual reward for there achievements creates physical evidence of progression and results in taking the education and athletics more serious. Yes there will be the ones that will slack off but those ones will slack off either way , you start slacking this way you not only lose the scholarship you also are losing a job .
Getting paid to play professional gigs while in college (as a musician) did encourage me to work harder. so you definitely have a point. My first gig like that was a brass quintet gig w/ 4 other professors. Imagine if they would've been paid, and I had not. I would've been angry, that they did the same work as I....and somehow they should paid and I'm not allowed to, b/c I'm a "student." If I were a coach making millions, I wouldn't be able to look at my players w/ a straight face. We're both working our asses off, but I'm the only one getting paid. It's just straight-up dishonesty. I'd feel like I'm lying to them EVERY DAY.
Only 10 guys on most D1 schools get full rides and maybe another 10 get half but that means 80 or 90 guys pay full amount. My question is why do they even play???
While any person going to bed hungry is an insult to all of us, who can't relate to a hungry belly needing food, and for at times denied? That is especially true when that person is young and with a whole life that should be look forward to and trying to better his or her station to life. This problem clearly goes well beyond college athletics. That is why you should vote for Bernie Sanders., because everybody should have the basics to life, which should never be compromised. And I do get why this subject is so thorny, why the college itself can not directly pay for athletes whether you are at the elite Duke Blue Devils, to North Carolina, to Witchita State to some shit Florida college no is ever going to hear about its important that the NCAA has parody. And that is why it has got to be adressed to higher authorities. Bernie Sanders 2016 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your argument is that an industry can only survive by exploiting their workers, perhaps you are really arguing that the industry shouldn't survive at all.
The short answer is no, student athletes should not be paid. Well except for one thing, which is the amount of sponsors these students bring in. When the students cut the net they climb a Werner ladder, a ladder which is being heavily plugged by the NCAA. The moment they climb that ladder or appear in a videogame or give an interview by a product branded table, they're effectively endorsing a product, and this they should be paid for, because it has fuck all to do with the universities they attend.
College athletes don’t get paid and when they put there careers on the line and get injured and suddenly they are not worth a damn have to pay for their own stuff such as gas, food, and they own time just pay the students a simple 300 to 500 a month because they can’t make any money during college because of there schedule. They have to study for there classes too
@@aldenunion They can't get a good education when they have to dedicate 50 plus hours a week to practicing and learning plays and exercising. Let's be honest and empathetic.
@@aldenunion If they get hurt they are screwed. The colleges have BILLIONS the athletes have a lottery chance of making a million bucks in their career probably like 1 in 10,000.
If student athletes get paid I bet more of them will play less hard and spend most of their money on drugs and alcohol which could hold back the potential NBA, NFL, etc players.
of course a former NBA star agrees that athletes should be payed. and how about the NBA and NFL require you to have some sort of degree whether it be an associates or bachelors to enter the draft.
Just pay the athletes and stop calling them kids they are adults now pay every sport soccer golf whatever there is more then enough money to go around football and basketball alone bring in enough money for all sports men and women PAY THESE COLLEGE ATHLETES! WELL DESERVED its like all these non athletes/ unathletic speakers dont want them to get paid which makes sense why they dont
my answer is no they shouldn't get payed///The issue that no one has ever considered surrounding this issue about paying college student athletes.IF THIS was to ever happen the righteous moral code and integrity of student athletes will be lost forever. giving birth to a nasty monster of gambling & buy off.
Couldn't gambling and buy offs occur now? Isn't the lack of pay an incentive to take part in these type of activities? Is the lack of pay an incentive to sell your autograph and have the money laundered through a third party? Lets not work off of an ideological view of the student athlete, but lets consider that a person may try to do what is best for that person. If you are one injury away from losing losing out on a career or continuing your education, why can't you try to get as much money as you can. What can you do to guarantee that you will get a complete education if you tear your ACL during a practice? Also, why is making money a threat to the "righteous moral code and integrity of student athletes?"
+Paul Dawson Because in this day Money talks and sadly it shouldn't be a threat to moral code and integrity but it is and that is reality give anyone of these kids a fat paycheck and What do you think a 19 year old kid or a 21 year old kid will do with the money. We have see it in the NFL these kids go backrupt after a couple years out of the league or they blow their money on some nonsense. We should be able to trust these kids with the money but I don't think we can.
These student athletes are treated like slave gladiators.. if they get hurt , they get fed to the lions
@WolfLarsen85 Depends Kareem said they lose the scholarship if they get hurt.
@@mervyngreene6687 Ok
the solution is simple: put the athletes on work-study and pay them like any other student who works for the school. this would also make them eligible for workman's comp and obligate the schools to take care of them medically.
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOORY MUCH. YOU JUST HELPED ME WITH MY HONORS ENGLISH EASSAY.
And trips home
sienna three, YES. You have to perform.
Dave Singerman why? They are getting a free tuition and not paying thousands of dollars to go to school.
And what type of work would they be performing for low wages? Teaching assistant model is a different model. We are talking a billion dollar March Madness industry alone, with coaches getting millions, and the players getting none of the pie?.
lol this chick acting like kareem couldn't ball right out of high school

Christine Brennan is on the Board of Trustees at North Western University. Always follow where the dollar comes from.
Conflict of interest right there
This is one of those debates where there is simply nothing to discuss. Pay them.
it really is that simple. Like humans often do, we create grey area where there IS none. Who wants to work a job where the employer says, ok we'll give you something to eat as payment....while the employer is making millions every year? Kind of like people who ask pro musicians to play for free lol.
Nobody asks escorts to work for free. But hence if a man is getting exploited it's "OK".
As someone not from USA, hearing how much they make the schools, how can they not get paid 🤯
I had a thought about the statement, "We are paying our student athletes with education."
Let's say that you have a job. A job you love, a job that you're great at, but still it's a job, and you want to be paid. Your employer is happy to pay you - in manure. When you ask why they are giving you manure, they explain, "This is just as valuable as money. You can use it to fertilize a field, then plant some seeds, weed and till the land, hope for good weather, and after all that work, reap a fine crop to support your family."
The metaphor breaks down in that you can turn around and sell the manure for some kind of financial gain.
Not all student athletes will be paid , only a select few, based on what the market brings.

Period.
At least they're just penniless, most students come back $30,000 in debt. Athletes are sparred this, so they've already profited.
Billions in revenue, Billions in expenses.
Without the college athletes there's no money!!!! PAY THEM
Kaiges Claiborne
No the college get's money from all the students who are not athletes. If all the students that don't play sports stopped going to school tomorrow ever last college wold be broke. Me and ever other student who is not an athlete spends more money to keep the colleges going then the sports.
Delain124 so what about the TV deals, and all the other sources of revenue that College Sports have generated as of late?
Kaiges Claiborne period
*Newt tearing that girl to shreds. The look on his face when he hears her B.S. is hilarious*
For all the money that gets generated especially college football and basketball and for the amount of work they put in, they deserve to get paid
"Paying"
students is based on the market value of the individual.
Also players if they are good enough and have enough equity with the team workout deals with the team where the team pays for the players college education when they decide to go back
Most players in MLB that are latin or from foreign countries dont even go to college and just get drafted from HS.
If they’re poor they get government subsidies
@wholly33 Exactly chances are he isn't an athlete. Getting exploited is never good for anyone. Why don't they give movie actors free housing and food instead of money?
No, because then all they’re are focused on that paycheck that they will only be getting for 4 years tops and not an actual education. The vast minority of college athletes actually make it to the NBA or NFL or something like that so chances are they’re gonna have to fend for themselves in the real world and because they were only focused on that short term paycheck they waisted their colleges years and have no clue what to do with the degree, that is even if they do well enough in classes to get one
You wouldn't have to pay the field hockey team as much as the fball players
its illegal to do that
This utter BS if I am Floyd Mayweather I make 100 million a fight Adrien Broner makes like 500 thousand a fight how come everything is not "equal"? We all know why Money Mayweather gets so much money but why are these athletes getting screwed?
If you not going to pay them, don't get mad when these football players go pro after 3 years and these basketball players go one and done.
Holy crap, I’m agreeing with Newt. “Cats and dogs living together...”
Respect Kareem for speaking up.
oh my god, She needs to get over herself.
Van jones probably thought slaves shouldn’t be paid either cus then they would get lazy

Its not his personal opinion. They make them take a counter stance.

Amazing how they worked around all that.
Pay them or lose them
In addition. not every student playing sports gets a scholarship.
PAY ALL OF THEM THE SAME AMOUNT PER SPORT.
AND.
ALLOW EACH STUDENT TO GENERATE MONEY ON THEIR OWN.
Love for the game was played at the peewee to high school levels if you go to college you should get paid !

Yeah, I guess the free education isn’t some form of compensation.
They should give a stipend for all the athletes. It is not to get make them rich.
Her’s the thing 40% of these kids for whatever reason don’t graduate so don’t give me that education payment bs for me don’t give them a salary but a stipend so they have what they need and Honor full scholarships for all four years plus medical problems and athletes should not be punished for gifts or other areas of payment
For me the problem is not that they don't get payed but a fact that there is a rule saying they cant earn this much money which is utter most bull
And then take a look at the coaches' paychecks.
I'm Disappointed in Van, I thought he was more knowlegeable/informed than he has shown himself to be.

Sorry lady, no one is watching field hockey.

@@iuquad16 Ok but without sports some people wouldn't attend OU or Alabama so those schools would lose millions.
Sooo her arguement is title ix shouldn’t it be proportional to what ur making there could be a way to pay players fairly and equally maybe some sort of fund to care for you if you leave college and don’t go pro and pay proportional to how well your team did. Same as social security
See you do not see paying the other college students that do great in academics get paid or get that much spotlight from the college athletes.
+Numbuh 5 they dont make money for college
TheJayDot Absolutely do. When a bill gates graduates creates a huge company its advertisement for that school
No Pay No Play
They wouldn't find time to get a job when they have to train.
they go to college for free. that should be enough
Captain Random dumbass they can get released anytime
jaquan541 so that's an excuse for them to get paid? while every other average human pays an arm and a leg, these athletes don't pay a single penny to go to college
Captain Random Regular student can get work study jobs. Student athletes can. All the money that the NCAA gets is from student athletes. They are paying the tuition for everybody. You must be a dumbass to
Think everybody on a team has a full ride
jaquan541 they do
no no and no again - if they allow it - high-school ball-players will then sign agents to represent them or parents will decide to whomever is the highest bidder.....then it takes the reason of commitment and the fundamentals of analyzing what coach fits my game, examining what program has the kind of players I would like to play with and what if a player gets his money before his commitment/ then he gets hurt? what protection or legal binding laws that will protect his contract - players that are not professional in their craft do not get the right to choose how much and what kind of money they deserve if they have not produced before.
Yeah right buddy.
Sorry if that upsets you but you don’t generate millions of dollars like the athletes do.
did anyone else just get here because of LAST CHANCE U
We been knew van wasn’t shit as a black man
We just witnessed the issue that this’ll always be an ongoing “discussion” they were all shutting him down or avoiding his points, cause they were aimed towards actually aiming towards fixing it.
At least a stipend
I think that College athletes should be paid because all these athletes put their bodies at risk and sometimes when they get injured they have to pay for it. Furthermore, these athletes work on their sport just like a job. It makes it hard for athletes to balance school and their sport. In addition, there are many students who have a scholarship at school like Duke. I actually did a podcast on this so please check it out.

Kareem is a little off topic. An Athlete getting and losing a scholarship for an injury is entirely different topic. The discussion is about Athlete compensation and not a student losing his scholarship.
Van Jones is disgusting on this topic. It's insane.
If the NCAA is non profit y dont they show it on tv for free???
there is enough money to pay football and basketball players and still fund minor sports.
Playing sports while going to an academic institution and learning is a privilege...unfortunately many people cant even afford both
Remember these are students first not athletes first.
Fans go to see the players perform not the head director of athletics, so pay them or make these people benefiting of the kids to take a pay cut.
what?? Van Jones is on the "left" and he thinks student athletes should NOT be payed??
If money is being made by these students, then they should be paid. These students rake in millions, surely they should see some of that?
Its idiotic if you believe that athletes shouldn't be paid. They have all the rights to be paid.
Only like 10% of football players are getting athletic scholarships. Its way rarer than these know nothings make it out to be.
Funny how the women did not even mention the most popular sport on earth. The real football.
Is this a news special or a WWE event?
And allow them to make money off their name
Student athletes needs to be paid. If they are not at least they should at least be able to bypass college and go pro directly
Pay them that's what the fans see is entertainment in sports!
If your argument is that an industry can only survive by exploiting their workers, perhaps you are really arguing that the industry shouldn't survive at all.
Pay them period they know better with so much money being made, pay them and they could pay for their own tuition.
They have to study for there classes too
Money manipulation will ruin the only honest tradition we had left.
EDUCATION IS PAYMENT.....NO DECADE OF STUDENT LOANS TO SUFFER...
@@aldenunion They can't get a good education when they have to dedicate 50 plus hours a week to practicing and learning plays and exercising. Let's be honest and empathetic.
@@ichoosemysanity6467 Yes that sure is another windshield view to consider.
If they are going to do drugs and booze they will just do it later on anyways. So why not give them free will they are over 18 anyways.
of course a former NBA star agrees that athletes should be payed. and how about the NBA and NFL require you to have some sort of degree whether it be an associates or bachelors to enter the draft.
I'm a conservative, but Gingrich is wrong on this one
did any one catch that the other guy the con side guy idk what his name is but he rose up hi eye brow 10:13 XD
van jones i think thats how you spell it
