The Utterly Killer Apache Transformed into a Total Different Beast

- After reluctantly accepting a last tour in Afghanistan in 2006, Ed Macy found himself on the most adrenaline-pumping mission of his 22-year stint aboard one of the globe’s deadliest aerial predators.
Assigned to the cockpit of a cutting-edge WAH-64 Apache attack helicopter, Macy climbed aboard a chariot of destruction of such complexity and might that studies conducted by the United States Army determined only a select few human brains could process the simultaneous tasks required to operate this aircraft. Macy was in that elite circle.
While providing air support for ground troops storming a major Taliban stronghold during Operation Herrick, the unthinkable happened. The troops Macy was guarding walked into a lethal ambush. Even unleashing the full might of the Apache’s M230 Chain Gun, AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, and Hydra-70 rockets wasn’t enough; one soldier, Lance Corporal Matthew Ford, was missing in action.
The British ground forces were forced to retreat, defeated; the enemy assembled in hordes, and using RPGs, they fiercely tried to knock the Apache out of the sky. Macy, his team, and their 25-million-dollar war machine became Ford’s last hope. They were about to embark on one of the most audacious rescue operations in modern military history…

I flew an OH-58 while in the army, because of my age and condition it took months of medical exams before getting cleared to go to flight school, I was born with a defect that allowed me to move my eyes independently and focus on 2 different objects, by the time I was an adult the muscles in my eyes were so developed that I could control my eye movements independently and at will, something that is required to fly an Apache which most Apache pilots have trouble doing.
A Derp that earns the Salute 🫡
Amazing. Do tell more please.
Wasnt there a Nicolas Cage movie on that?
@@blech71 yes actually the same time I was getting ready to go to flight school.
Me too
This isn't exactly the full story, but appreciate it's been edited for YT. Ed Macy wrote a book called 'Apache' which i highly recommend anyone interested in this story reads. They were actually at base when the news came in someone was missing, they were expicitly ordered to not take off, Royal Marines were strapped to the sides of the Apaches (something it can do, but was never recommended unless in a real emergency), they ran the risk of court martial for disobeying orders, but did it anyway.
Great read that book
Seriously?! They strapped a couple of Royal Marines to the sides of the Apache? Sounds like something straight out of a hollywood movie lol.
That's gotta be one of the craziest things a solider can do! How on earth is that even possible? Did they harness them on to the weapons pylons or something?
People forget it can actually carry 4 people. You can sit on the sponson an ride it like a little bird
@@justandy333they hold on to those huge handles on the side of the cockpit an sit on the sides
@justandy333 yeah, as stated above, 4 people can sit on the sponsons. If memory serves, I think it's also able to carry two stretchers, but again the owners manual states 'only in an emergency' in very big letters lol
Even with the more powerful Rolls Royce engines, the Apache struggled to lift Ed Macy's balls.
This is a great channel with great content that's why I subscribed.
PLEASE do NOT become a channel that uses "clickbait" thumbnails of military or commercial equipment that obviously does NOT exist in real life outside photo-shopped pictures, I can't stand that in a channel. Thank you for taking the time to review my comment. =)
You aren't buying that aircraft carrier that looks like the SHIELD helicarrier?
@@MichaelBradley1967 lol not anymore =P
I agree, like the channel and content, but almost skipped this video because of the goofy thumbnail.
Dark Skies delivers! You don't have to worry about this channel pumping clickbait. This guy digs deep into the vaults of aerospace, then channels his intriguing delivery style to make it interesting and suspenseful. Good stuff!
There are def. enough real life, amazing things in this world to delve into. No need for a cheap mock-up to attract clicks. It works to an extent, but a UA-cam channel loses its legitimacy in the process, making it a losing bet in the long run.
I just started my Apache journey a few months ago. It’s a fun helo to fly.
I smiled when I saw the A 10s show up.
I was a Blackhawk crew chief in the 6th Calvary in 1986, we were the first unit of the US Army to field the AH64 helicopter.
Big dog and pony show, but fun and interesting.
I was an MH-53H Crew Chief in the USAF (82-87). I was very interested to see how it would fare.
I was uh-60 Crew chief 1AD combat aviation brigade .
From one to another thank you for your service to our country and humanity brother.

I'd highly recommend both of Ed Macy's books, Apache and Hellfire.
Excellent presentation and story.
I red Macey book. Worth IT
Well, I blue him.
Thank you A10
I live in the south west of England and have seen a few of these from a distance. Very distinctive.
However the best view I ever had of one was in Raynes Park South west London area about twenty years ago. The pilot obviously knew that people were gawping, so flew at a pedestrian pace. It was a truly awesome sight.
If that chap is reading this, thank you!!
I love stories like this!!!!👍🏻
Awesome!!
Still worth every penny 👍
Other military branches fly helicopters, but the Army is the King of the chopper force!
They wear an awful lot of gear. I mean i get it, its for if you get shot down. Looks super uncomfortable tho. Fun fact: the apache carries or rather can carry stingers on the end of the weapons stations. They can also be popped off in the event of a crash landing with the gear for turning iit into a manpad stored in a locker just behind the weapons station "wings".
I thought they were using aim9
One Apache, plus 16 missiles, minus 16 tanks, equals A-10 helicopter.
So far my favorite story time with Mr Dark
Integrated CAS at its finest. The harpies of death and a fire breathing dragon. Two magnificent machines just doing what they do. Ruling.
If I recall from the book when the 4 marines got dropped two started running the wrong way in the dust and had to jump out and run after them. They also think that ford was friendly fire in the chaos
"Helmet Fires" are common with such high tech fixed and flex aircraft. Too much information can kill pilots and crew.
Three Apaches AND an A-10? How big was that Taliban force?
Substantially smaller afterwards.

Firebirds with tommy lee jones and nick cage was badass. Showcased the apache gunship
It was absolutely NOT badass, but a good waste of time

Absolutely. One of the few movies I've actually walked out on. Nick Cage has had a few good movies. Firebirds was NOT one of them.

6:10 Copilot? The Brits squeezed an extra person in that thing??
One in the back, pilot in the front.
@@klausschwabshubris The rear position is the pilot, the forward position is the gunner. While the gunner can act as the copilot they are not two separate people. The video mentions, "the pilot, copilot, and gunner" as if they were three people. Indeed, for the rest of the video they act like there are three people in there, often referencing, "Macy and his team" as if there was more than just one other person.
There are always 2. Designed that way.
@@life_with_berniehad marines sat on the sides riding them in...not kidding either
Even in the Grand Theft Auto games, it is a good challenge to unleash the full capability of that beast lol
Not for me!
If you got someone good in the “front seat” in GTA V Online it’s a blast to be the pilot, especially if you’re covering moving product for a business. If you have a few friends their version of the Hind-D works so the person in the back can shoot flares if under missile attack. God,… I gotta hop back online and get familiar with everything all over again!!!
This was a great video thank you so much
Okay. Some of the content on Dark Skies and sister channels had been getting a bit slapdash and rushed - frequent occasions of an airframe that isn't the title topic getting referenced in the script accompanied by B-roll of a random different fighter - but this... this one, the script was epic and presented excellently.
Whoa whoa whoa...STAFF SERGEANT yanked back on the cyclic??? So enlisted NCOs are pilots now??? What happened to warrants and commissions 🤨
When the apache fielded they accept staff sergeants who were Bradley master gunners for the program to fill gunners positions
“Cutting edge”
Shit is so old that DoD tried to replace it 30 years ago
The Apache is arguably the best attack helicopter in the world.
No argument about it
@@Rotorhead1651the new Zulu Cobra might be its equal, in certain ways.
Amazing people. That was an exceptional video really done well. I’m guessing some of the prose came from the book?
Well done brothers! SGDM!
Tandem seat, air conditioned, chariot from hell.
I was just north of San Diego at a rest stop. Way out I could see the outline of an aircraft carrier. Then I heard some helicopters headed my way. I grew up in the world around civilian helicopters so I was wondering what I would luck out and see. Three of them came over at tree top level and I just froze. I can't even begin to to explain except that they literally projected death. I have never seen a machine designed with such emphasis on one thing only. Killing. I know, you've seen them at air shows but to have been surprised by them and never seeing one up close and then they go over so low I could have grabbed a wheel was beyond my brains ability to cope. I KNEW beyond any doubt that I was going to die. Not fear, just acceptance of that fact. Again sorry, I can't really explain the sensation. Never felt it before or after. I have nothing but pity for anyone who tries to fight one of these.
A teacher at that age was judge, jury, and executioner.
I'm behind in my listening - probably too much of my favorite drink - but I'm slowly catching up.
Thank you!
Ed Macy wrote 2 books about his time in the WAH-64 Apache, Apache and Hellfire
that b-roll footage tho
3:13 Assassin's Creed: Apache
Macys book is a very good read
Reminds me of Jaegers from Pacific Rim movie
Funny to think it was a ordering error that meant the British ended up with only getting the longbow version... That was a good fuck up
how do you fit the body of a soldier inside the cockpit of an apache? never been close to one, but from the pictures it does noit seem to have enough room?
There’s footage of them attached to the side of the helicopter.
The description of the video does not match the content. It’s almost like dealing with ‘click-bait’.
please do a feature on 160th SOAR and Special Operations Aviation.
Is that related to the SOLL II units?
Have u guys heard of the mi28

I love the clickbait rotors in the thumbnail.

Apache defines where the front is.
from 1982 where is Replace New Model - and Hellfire OUT - U.S. Army announced it was fielding the Spike NLOS missile on AH-64E Apaches as an interim solution to acquire new munitions that provide greater stand-off capabilities.. It's Israeli answer with great distances working..A lot of countries Buy Spike to replace Hellfire..
I always forget the Brits also fly the Apache
no plane has ever been designated an A-10 Warthog. a "Warthog" is an A-10 Thunderbolt II. in future, help decrease the use of the misnomer by correctly referring to the plane.

We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.
How did he get him out? Did he put him in the cpg seat?
thank ||u . ( 2024 / May / 31 )
Did I hear him say the pilot was a Staff Sergeant? Really?
To be a pilot in the British Army Air Corps you only need to be a sergeant. I served 7 years in the AAC
I worked as an avionics and armament tech on the Longbow and it's predecessor. Later I worked with Boeing for almost ten years on Longbow flight simulators. If I found one fueled and ready to go, I could fuck shit up without anyone in the pilot seat. It aint that hard, it's easy to fly and the Fire Control Radar is wicked.
What's with the thumbnail?
What I'm getting from the descriptions of the necessary eye control is that the Army developed a system made for the eyes of chameleon lizards then just forced pilots to adapt to it, sounds accurately boneheaded and dense lmao. No wonder drones are replacing the functions of military attack helicopters more and more as time goes by. Makes you wonder how overloaded the Russian Black Shark pilots were with having to handle everything solo
And yet, 10's of thousands of Army pilots have managed to do it. The training is there. the techniques are there. Your conclusions contrast with the facts.
@jswjr6001 10's of thousands of pilots huh? Exactly how many Apache helicopters have even been fielded by the Army for you to pull that number out? Sounds like bs
@@kingdomskobolds8267 2400 have been built as of 2020 . In service (US) since 1986. 40 years of service. about 800 currently in service, in just the US. That is wiki open source numbers.
A conservative estimate is 3 rated pilots per airframe (when you consider staff supported flyers, etc.)
So, 2400 current pilots, just in the US.
Now walk that number back 40 years....
Dead or alive at least those bastards didn't get to keep him.
I’ve seen it in action in Afghanistan but I’m not so sure it would fare well against a near peer enemy in a disputed lower altitudes airspace.

What a dumb title. Here’s the part when you change the name 4 times over the next week.
Channels do the title changes because it drives engagement for the algorithm, just one of those things you gotta do to get the numbers up :/
It's so difficult to fly that Tommy Lee Jones had to teach Nicolas Cage how to fly it.
That was a great flick. Firebirds

Just an FYI... There is no amount of G's that an Apache or any other rotatry aircraft is able to pull that comes anywhere close to a fighter jet.. Time on station or in battle wears on anyone, but pushing the Apache (etc) to its max.. You'll lose your blades if not the entire hub / swash system before you so much as start to grey out.. Sorry.. Probably irritating facts getting in the way of a good yarn..
"FireBirds" Is a Nick Cage movie exactly about that.
It sucked ass. Cage has had a few good movies. THAT was NOT one of them.
@@Rotorhead1651 Yeah, he was on coke, or asleep, or both. I don't know.
Even as a kid I cringed. I was there for the beautiful Apache's.
its not what I expected ie, I expected to hear of the development process of the inception of the helicopter to what it is now adays...
not of a military mission involving such helicopter, during a rescue mission, as not forgetting multiple missions have occurred & with one leading the way ie whereby marines were picked up on 1 "I think 2-3" Apache helicopters, tied to the side rails travelled pasted/though heavily enemy contact, some marines were injured etc this a book was written & made headlines news.. anyway, good story... pity we don't make films involving situations like this, highlighting the work the UK actually achieves, rather then 99% american made none sense, glorifying american..... erm "work" usually failures ie black hawk down, lone survivor etc whilst made with massive amounts of false/made-up material.
Lose the clickbait thumbnails and descriptions! You're better than that, or should be. This was a great story to be told, but many will just pass it by seeing the tacky photoshopped thumbnail and dramatic description. Man you gotta hand it to the talis. To go toe to toe with fuckin a10s, apaches, pissed of marines and brits....those guys can fight.
I can understand the mention Ronald Reagan made on videogames: They train better combat pilots.
There was an old Nicolas Cage movie called Firebirds that was about the Apache helicopter. Supposedly, they let Nicolas Cage takemthe test to be a gunner formthe Apache and he passed the test needed to go to training. Like a lot of actors he had a pilot's license and was learning to fly helicopters. Don't inowmhow much was true, probably none of it, but if it is true, you can see it because Nic Cage did act crazy in that movie.
