A well hidden jewel in the Moranbong Band:
The synthesizer player Kim Hyang-sun here switches to Russian accordion (bayan). She usually looked almost bored when playing synth and actually quit the band in 2013. But here with her accordion, her eyes shine up just from playing this simple tune. The reason for this is she is in reality an accordion virtuoso of very high class.
Check out this video when she performs "Horse hooves at Mt. Paektu": • Video and it becomes clear she really has no use of the Moranbong Band. She could just play everything by herself...

When I first encountered this treasure just a few short years ago I was astonished and it really got me thinking and questioning. I am now beginning to discover just how much we have been lied to. The demonisation of the DPRK by the ‘western’ media and ‘politicians’ is just a continuation of the last century (+) of lies.
It was written in 1923 by the way. I am just looking for a link if I can find one - please bear with me.

I will send it to my mother, and she will be surprised, thanks to generations of repetitive "indoctrination" regarding the poet. I don't know much about the DPRK, but I clearly remember a puzzling incident I encountered in elementary school in South Korea long ago: The teacher told the classroom full of children to draw a "Ppar-Gang-ie" - meaning something similar to "red creature". I had no idea what it was, so I looked at my classmates' drawings, and I saw that ALL the students were drawing hideous red monsters with horns, claws, teeth, etc....Now that I have a little more information about the story of Koreans, it pains me each time I am reminded that a same people with a same culture were artificially divided and indoctrinated separately to view each other as enemies.

I'm Romanian and this song also makes me think of childhood memories and of home - I believe it's both the beautiful harmonisation of the instruments and the fact that the theme of this song is very similar to the kind of stuff we'd learn to sing for the 8th of March in Kindergarten and/or primary school. There are of course cultural differences, but in a few ways North Korea now is more similar to how Romania was in the 1980s/1990s than nowadays Romania is... Anyway, where do you live now? I'm in the UK myself.

Absolutely agree! Kim Hyang-sun's rarely seen Bayan is at the heart of this sweetly relaxed yet deeply passionate song, she just lights up as she plays it, and it's because of those rare performances like this one that she is actually one of my very favourite members of the Moranbong Band (being incredibly beautiful also helped though of course...)! I really wish she had played more on the Bayan with the Moranbong Band.
I also found the inscription on her bayan is interesting, it says "Русь" (Rus') which makes it seem likely that Kim Hyang-sun plays a Russian-made imported accordion, rather than DPR Korean-made Unbangul (은방을)-brand accordion.

@@stanleysur600 통일은 하루아침에 이룰수는 없겠죠.. 통일을 너무 감상적으로만 봐선 안됩니다.. 김정은이 반중인지 아닌지 우리가 알수 없지만.. 중요한점은 북한경제는 이미 중국경제에 거의 종속되있다시피하다는 사실입니다. 통일로 가기위한 밑거름을 다지기 위해선.. 남과 북이 어떻게든 경제적으로 협력할 수 있는 부분을 찾아 시작해야 한다는 것이며.. 그러기 위해선 가장 큰 걸림돌인 북이 핵개발을 포기하고.. 국제사회의 경제제재로부터 탈피해야 합니다. 남북 경제협력이 시작되고, 협력분야가 늘어나다보면 남과북이 적대관계도 청산되고, 점점 평화적 공존으로 변해갈 것입니다.. 북한도 남한으로의 개방과 내부적 개혁을 시작해야해요.. 꼭 정권이 바뀔필요도 없습니다. 김정은이 하건 누가하건.. 북이 변화하면 되는것입니다.. 남한은 그 과정에서 인프라구축 등 충분히 도울 수 있을겁니다. 중국과 대만이 서로 전쟁이 날것처럼 으르렁거려도 경제분야는 협력합니다. 한반도도 그럴 수 있습니다. 이런 것들이 선행되고, 북도 스스로 경제적으로 안정되고, 남과북이 교류하며 동질감을 찾아갈때.. 훗날 통일도 가능하리라 봅니다. 북을 보며 안타까운것은 경제가 파탄난것도 있지만, 사회, 정치, 문화적인면까지 모두 점점더 중국화 되어가는 거 같습니다. 혼자 생각일지 모르나..안타까울뿐입니다.. 그냥 제 사견입니다..
