  • Psychologist and anger management specialist, Dr. Conte created the “Yield Theory,’’ as a powerful approach to combining radical compassion with conscious education.
After earning his doctorate at Duquesne University, Dr. Conte co-founded a center in California to help people who have been convicted of violent crimes. Now, in addition to writing, public speaking and co-hosting a reality TV show about sports’ coaches, Dr. Conte works with inmates in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

People who continuously breaking laws are not matured. They need to be mentored and trained to be real men and women who will know how to handle issues affecting their lives. They need to be taught to love themselves and be positive all the time.

Gabriel Andrai I agree, unfortunately the fact that if you have a criminal record will cause about 80% of work to be removed from you.
Once someone has reformed then the continued life restrictions are inhuman.

punishment solves nothing. If it did we'd have no crime by now.
Teaching compassion is the best we can do to prevent people to cause suffering.

You have expressed these concepts so perfectly and I really respect your passion. I have just finished a Community Services course and I am doing a Mental Health course right now. What you have shared in this video is what is being displayed in these courses, as the most important method of communication/therapy. Congratulation for keeping this strong and beautiful ripple going, I will be sharing this video once I figure out how.

I have spent the majority of my life behind bars, honestly I was put here and no one seems to understand a word I say. I have spend time is restricted management unit, and would love to have share my perspective on the control group. Being 5 months old and wearing a diaper, and sleeping behind bars every night can be lonely. I am happy to find some one who understands my perspective.

Incredibly.motivating message. We can't just lock people up and toss the key because more often than not, those people return to society. Some will reoffend, obviously. However, the others that may be changed if given the right guidance and support can be productive to society. Some are just monsters and we can't change that. But most are humans that are reachable.

Im imagining a world where kids are taught anger management and figuring out their emotions, starting from kindergarten and continously all the way up to H.S. graduation. Emotions are what cause tragedy, the method is not really the issue.. its the emotions leading to that event that caused it. If we're all taught to handle our emotions from a Dr. like Conte from early age, the crime rate would be ridiculously low in within one or two generations, in my opinion.
I'd love to see a mandatory, yearly class dealing with psych and understanding our own emotions and how it causes us to act. That will save more lives than a cure for cancer, exponentially, every year, forever.

Society doesn’t let people just serve their time and move forward. A record stays with a person and it’s so difficult for an offender to move forward. There needs to be reform that will truly give people a second chance. There is so much corruption and money made in prisons and innmates are truly the forgotten society ...

I wish the issues that this intelligent gentleman is speaking on were restricted to prison and inmates. His ideas would help fix a lot of the human interaction problems which prevent them from festering in bigger problems. We live as an intellectually lazy society made up of many individuals who prefer to label and dismiss people rather than feeling obligated to understand them and what this does to them. Dismissing another human being is the same basic mindset that allows criminals to do horrible things to others. And many of us do the same thing everyday. If it were possible, I would sentence everyone who wished to influence prison policy to a trial and a month of jail and prison where no one knew that you hadn't done anything. (Like undercover boss) Same for the mental health system. it is easier to have compassion as well as have an educated opinion when you've been on the other side of things.

Thank you so much. Honestly, the audience laughed a lot harder in person, and they emoted a lot, too. For some reason, you can hardly hear any audience reaction, which was much different than my experience when I was there. When I first saw this video, I actually also picked up on the discrepancy between what it was like being there live, and what seems to come across on this video. I feel like my mic sounds very loud and there was no mic on the audience. In any case, I put my heart and soul into what I do, and I sincerely appreciate your kind words. Sending you all my best and tons of peace!

Ever wonder why prison in other country less time and rehumanitize and get apartment behind fence works? Rehumanitize. As much as dont deserve u say. They don't recoffend on you. Do we just want to give correction a job? Why not less prison time. Why not correction officer trained in just that. More pay for c officer. Less money in rehabs bring it to prison. Maybe let c officer be someone with a record. That understand. Rehabilitated
