- Jazmin Sawyers discovers the story of 'The Miracle Mile.'
Sir Roger Bannister’s name will forever be synonymous with the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Sport. In the summer of 1954 at the V British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, Canada, he competed against John Landy in what became known as “The Miracle Mile”. It was the first time that Bannister and Landy - at that time the only two sub-four minute runners in the world - had faced each other, and was also the first time two runners broke four minutes in the same race. Bannister defeated his Australian rival on the last bend in a race that would go down in Commonwealth sport folklore, in a time of three minutes, 58.8 seconds. - Спорт
I have the honor of training with Roger Banister and pacemaker Chris Chataway at Oxford Universities Iffley road athletics track throughout the summer of 1953. I remember then. Roger saying after an exceptional time for the mile that. "I can now see a "Four-minute-mile" is within reach."
I represented my school & north Oxfordshire schools in atheltics. Specializing in the 100 yard & 220 sprints. The Half Mile. The Shot Put. & Discus.
That is why my school "Easington Modern School Banbury" arranged for me to attend the training sessions.
Today (2021) I am 84 years old and still do my one hour powerwalk (Regardless of he weather) & can be seen at any time between 4am & 5,30am in the morning along Kenilworth Road Balsall Common.
I often get a wave or beep from passing traffic.
Please give me a wave if you ever see me.
Keep a look-out for the Cowboy hat in summer & the Russian Ushanker Hat in Winter (A gift from my Russian-Daughter-in-law).
I intend to train you up to a 4 min mile young man you’ve still got potential

At the time Roger Bannister (not yet a Sir) ran the first sub 4 minute mile, I was at secondary school. We were all very excited about it and it inspired many of us to run. I later ran in the cross-country team for the school and was a reserve for the county secondary schools cross-country team. I hope that he had a good life and left it peacefully. Thank you for inspiring me.

Congratulations Trevor. What are your personal best times?
Primary source footage of one of the greatest mile races of all time. Each competitor oozing with class and sportsmanship even to this day. It's a shame one of them had to come in second. Cheers

I watched this live as a youngster. My dad had bought our first television set about a month before the 1954 British Empire Games were held.
The term "Commonwealth Games" was not used in 1954 and not until the 1960's as I recall. The CBC had a full crew of commentators for the various competitions. Our family sat glued to the 17 in. screen to watch this race but of course, in those days there was no video-tape /instant replay. It was many years later before I saw this again. Great memories.

The 'Miracle Mile' will always remain one of the world's top epic athletic's battles!
John was a truly great runner, with a beautiful / efficient running style. He made a very solid attempt to win the Empire Games race but that is not to say that his tacticts could not have been even better. But he had no coach. I personally believe that had he the nous of Steve Cram he could have taken Roger by running slower over the first two laps and mounting a charge from say 660 yards before the finish. But no-one will ever know as history is set in stone.
How extremely pretty Jasmine is!
Landy should have run 2nd lap nearer 59 - Bannister knew his likely tactics to try and break him
Two classy gentlemen.
Hard to find two humble and admirable people like Sir Roger Bannister and John Landayn nowadays.

Why do people seem to forget about Chris Brasher. He was the workhorse for the sub four minute mile. He didn’t get a knighthood like the other two, but have a look at the history of this brilliant man.
That is very exciting. Thank you.
Respect to both of them❤️ John lady had stitches in his foot and said it had no affect on the race. True sportsmen❤️
Wonderful!
Funny thing is, We’re related. Grandads cousin :)
Holy shit!
That's like 60 MPH!
He could pass cars on the freeway
15 miles per hour
Uploaded the day he died what a great man

This old man ran a sub-4 minute mile? Amazing
At 5:30, they were in such a position that he could see both their shadows. I heard one of their shadows almost won the race, but Roger Bannister sprinted at the end and left both shadows in his dust.

@@deconstructedshorts1848 Yeah, but when are we gonna hear about THE SHADOW breaking the impossible?
Shadow always seems to lose.. lol
What's interesting is if Australian John Landy ( who ran 1.4 sec faster than Roger the following month in June 54 ) had travelled to Europe in the summer of 1953, looking for faster tracks and better competition, he would undoubtedly have become the first sub-4 min miler. So, why didn't he? And, why didn't his athletic federation encourage him to do so? Well, I think that nobody back then had any idea of how iconic and symbolic and inspirational and famous the breaking of the 4 minute mile barrier would become.
The Mind & Physical Action….

I am happy with my current pb of 5:34, I don’t think I’ll hit 5 mins without making my bmi much lower, (I’m an endurance runner, I need to be heavier to carry the weight)

Goodness me what Athletes. I have no doubt with all modern methods both would be sub 3:45 without any drug bollocks.
Same with Zatopek he would run sub 26mins for 10k

Sure puts the metric system to shame. They ruined the Olympics with that nonsense. Half as many people are interested now as would be. At least now they're starting to run 1600 instead of 1500 meters. What lame nonsense!
