Diana Ross & The Supremes was confirmation that Diana Ross was the only supreme whose name was bankable on its own. The attempts by disgruntled fans to pit Diana leading a 'group' against Diana leading only herself is done to diminish the longevity and magnitude of Ross' achievement. Regarding her former group, Diana Ross was the key to the entire operation. Berry Gordy placed the future of his company on Ross’s shoulders, thus making her the torchbearer for Motown. The act was built around her voice and sound, her style, her image, her persona. Her hard work and dedication set the tempo, and unlike fellow members, Ross didn't have a stand-in replacement if she became sick for she was essential personnel. Some individuals were overwhelmed by the magnificence of Diana Ross and her trailblazing talent, therefore directed their energies towards the handmaidens. Those same people were bitter when Diana left the Supremes as she took the fame/stardom with her. They reject her acclaimed solo career because they would have to acknowledge that she made the group as special as it was. Diana Ross, of course, made history beyond her group, becoming an award-winning, multi-media superstar. She became the female entertainer of the twentieth century (certified by Billboard magazine). Her unimaginable rise as not only a superstar but icon then legend only enhanced the Supremes' legacy and kept the flame of their glory alive all these years.

gateway1foeva Berry was more concerned about using Diane to line his own pockets.. he was the only one that walked away filthy rich.. it took diane decades after leaving motown to amass her fortune.

Absolutely the truth! Diana made the Supremes as was evidenced when she left. She went on to become the biggest star in the entertainment industry to this day. No entertainer is as glamorous as her !

I love the entire performance, but, I especially enjoy the way she moves among her dancers.
Her movements look totally organic, especially around 3:10.

By now Diane Ross had gotten as "HIGHER" as she was gonna go!
After leaving THE SUPREMES were she executed together with Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson & later Cindy Birdsong 12 # 1 Pop Hits in five years(1964/1969) she backstabbed her way into a "solo career" that has produced a disappointing 6 # 1 Pop Hits in forty three years(1969/2012) today the legacy is THE SUPREMES as she has been surpassed in the industry by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Madonna and Beyonce already well on her way!

TWTR4EVER , That's unfair for you to outline her career about her number one hits from 1969 thru 2012. First of all, she went Solo in 1970, not 1969. Second of all, if you know anything about America's wack music industry, then you would know that female artists have it much more harder than males to keep their legacy going. The industry is always looking for a young bright superstar that falls between the magical age of 21 through 30 years of age. She didn't do well in America after the early 80's because of political bureaucracy. American Music wanted to see female artist showing their body as if they were completely naked and sing lyrics that were full of sex or rebellion. Diana was not for all that. Let's keep it real. Also, during that time while she wasn't having the success in America that she enjoyed in the 60's , 70's, and early 80's, she was still breaking down walls in Europe, Asia, and Australia. The same music that they are playing today was what they were basically playing in the mid 90's.
Diana is way too dignified and classy to stoop that low. Let's keep it real.
I don't pay much attention to today's Billboard charts anyway. It's all commercialized, connotative, and manipulated. A song that sounds horrible can reach number 1, just because they had powerful producers behind the song and they force and paid the radio stations and clubs to play it so that they can get a successful return on their investment. People get brained-wash by anything that is constantly planted in their ear.
You should know that. If you don't, then that's a pity.
Plus age defines music for sure, especially, for women singers. It doesn't make since for teenagers and young adults under the age of 30 that has the most buying power to be buying music made by a 60 something year old or 70 something year old artist. DIFFERENT ERA DIFFERENT STYLE.
I rest my case. Good day!
