What is the best size maul to use for leather tooling

Random question time; I tried your packing tape trick on the flesh side on my first project, and it worked great! Only issue was that when I was removing the tape, it pulled up a lot of the fibers and created a very rough back, like rough-out leather with a much longer nap. Is that normal? Is the tape I used too strong? Or maybe it was because I left it on there too long (It took me about 6 days to finish)?

I have 12,14,16 and 20oz tapered mauls. Have I overdone it? Yes. Do I regret it? A little. 14 for beveling and 20 for setting flower centers usually. Something I have to remind myself of is when striking the tool is focus on top of the tool to eliminate bounce off. I think with a mallet there is more striking surface and less of an issue.
