THE MTHATHA PROTECTION FEE MAFIA THAT CONTROLS MORE THAN JUST THIS RURAL TOWN!

  • Let me explain why I believe that what is happening here in #Mthatha is a mafia enterprise…
In Mthatha and other regions in the province like Gqeberha, a troubling trend of extortion through “protection fees” is significantly affecting local businesses and vulnerable individuals and its been in the news.
The form of extortion - in which businesses, particularly those owned by foreigners but fast spreading to SA owned businesses, are coerced into paying for dubious protection services ( basically pay us to protect your business from us) - these criminal acts have led to some businesses shutting down due to alleged intimidation and threats from criminal syndicates.
What started with petty criminals harassing street vendors, then foreign run spaza shops and then foreign owned hardware stores has now upgrades to all types of trade business extortion. BnBs, Petrol Stations, Doctors Offices, Taverns, Street vendors, Apartment blocks konkeeee and its honestly so disheartening.
Some fees are rumored to be as high as R100,000 per month for some business and up to 50% for smaller businesses even from oMama selling amagwinya on the side of the road.
Other individuals and business owners, including property owners, are said to have been forced to pay R20 000 for small businesses, R50 000 for medium-sized, and more than R200 000 for big businesses.
One petrol station was even asked to pay 350k per month. Crazy
Even worse, school teachers and other professionals renting properties in Mthatha, have allegedly been forced to pay between R500 and R1 000 a month “for protection” and extra rent from some even gov owned properties.
The MTHATHA protection fee racket is but a small cog in a larger mafia style organized crime syndicate that is operating from the south coast of Durban right through Mthatha, East London, Gqeberha into the Western Cape.
The syndicate involves petty, criminals, semi organized, criminals, Security companies, CIT kingpins, small business owners, who are victims, big business owners, who many are also victims, but some are collaborators, also don’t forget some unscrupulous traditional leaders who hold a large sway in matters here due to land custodianship to allow businesses to be built in tribal land and then in the mix there are drug networks and foreign cocaine cartels. This is a crazy melting point of criminal potjie Kos. To be simple. Kubi eMthatha and the only law that exists here is the law of the gun.
People live in fear and there’s a realization that this network will soon, if it hasn’t already, start to run the district and possibly the province.
Let’s have this conversation in its entirety. Share your thoughts, your frustrations, your ideas.

If they cared, no sensible person can ask ugogo wamagwinya to rent to him. No. Abo strong men with guns yibo abagcina be ruler everyone with an iron fist. They kill us and they also kill each other. They are not for peace. They are for war. You may laugh at my solution but I think all these are symptoms of the midnight darkness inside peoples hearts. When the rot is inside someone, all external efforts will be fruitless. No government intervention can be enough. Nothing will work. The only way is back to God. We must seek God first. And I include iDlozi elihle in this.

I liked Holomisa’s recommendation to establish a special investigative unit. They shouldn’t be announced on the news or anywhere else; they should just hit the ground running. The Police Service and Army can step in once we’ve identified the real masterminds. Their role should be to cut the problem at the root and make arrests. But for this to work, the government must prioritize the safety budget.

Makes sense as to why things have gotten so bad without any action. The authorities are definitely involved. At all levels in that province corruption is involved.

The Transkei villages are developing fast people are building mansions and beautiful houses, foreigners must have grabed the opportunity to make money hence many hardwares.
Mbizana for an example has developed so much just in the past five years alone. Plus Transkei has high active population.

Since early 2000 this thing has been happening in Mthatha growing up in Mqhekezweni as a boy we were always told about this crime but now it's just gotten worse. Today boys born 2005 are raping grannies it's just bad for Mthatha. Our parents, brothers and sisters are still voting this useless corrupt ANC. It's really sad for my home town and province

Blame ANC all you want but it did not plant violence. They just left it there. Apartheid created violence. And I am not an ANC member.
By the way Western Cape in not ANC but it has the worst extortion cases and they are used to it hence the silence.

One common denominator with all these criminals is that most do not have grade 12 and almost none have tertiary qualifications. Make education free and make it illegal for any child to drop out of school.

What part and role is played by NSFAS in the tertiary level of education if that is not interpreted as free education?
