    Thank you so much for this video. I was about to take my Jeep Renegade to the dealership because I could not figure out what was wrong I just knew it had something to do with the clutch safety switch. I had the switch out because I was testing it and it was good so then I was out of ideas. My husband sent me this video I immediately checked and BAM my Renegade started right up. You my friend just saved me hundreds or thousands of dollars of it being at the dealership to get it serviced. Again thank you so much!!!

    Great explanation and how to. Here in the UK we have a slightly different clutch switch but the way it connects is exactly the same so thanks!

      Thanks Ray glad it helped. I found on my car that the non-starting condition was also related to a corroded ground connection which is under the engine, its a bolt connected to a wire mesh ground strap.

    Hey John, replaced this sensor today and I found it really easy to get to the back of the sensor if you reach around the pedal box from the right. I am trying to fix a p0805 error. I find the information on these cars a bit confusing as my car will just start even when it’s in gear. (2016 model). I cleared the ecu and hope the error doesn’t come back. We’ll see. I also tried fuses but they all seem good. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you SO much for this video!!! I have a 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth and I love it, I went out to start it the other day and it just wouldn't work, but pop the clutch while rolling to jump start it.
    (As an aside, waaaaaayyyyy back in the day when I still lived in the Carolinas, I went in Benson Fiat and test drove a 500C Lounge in the summer of 2012 and fell in love with the car after wanting on I saw on BBC's Top Gear. I was never able to make the purchase I planned on because I ended up getting laid off a few weeks later, but everyone was so nice. Good to see you guys are still around!)

    I just disconected the small yellow snap-arm from the clutchpedal and let the spring in the swtch go back to the bottom .No more startproblems. But you have to let the electric 3 pin cable be still in place.

      Thanks Jerry, since I made this video there’s a few other things to check. One of the most important is the positive cable connection to the starter solenoid which can get a little corroded. The other things are the ground strap at the engine to frame itself web strap made out of copper.

    That clutch switch is responsible only for a start up the engine or something more? For example for giving an information to the ecu while switching gears about clutch position to reduce shakes etc. ?

    Hello. This is the closest I have seen to a solution to my problem. I am trying to get the clutch/brake pedal out on my 2015 Fiat 500. I have all the bolts loose and I think everything else. I don't want to pry to hard and it seems mostly loose but no give. I live pretty far from a Fiat repair shop. Any one that can help me get the thing out would be helpful. After a stroke life is a very interesting place. It looks like everything is disconnected and still the assembly refuses to come out. Anyway, hope the description is enough to give you an idea.

      Be sure to check and clean the wire mesh ground strap points also and slightly loosen and the two starter bolts and then retighten them to make sure that you’re getting a good ground there. I discovered that it is important for a reliable operation.

    Hi John - greetings from the UK! Many thanks for your video - very helpful. We have a 2014 500 Lounge which is throwing a P080A fault code regarding the clutch position sensor / switch. I cannot find any more detail on this, but it seems to point to the switch. The weird thing is that the car starts whether or not we depress the clutch, and I'm guessing this isn't supposed to happen, which also points to the switch, or...?

    • @fiatofgreenville
      @fiatofgreenville  3 роки тому

      I’m not sure about the UK models, if they can be started without the clutch being depressed. In the USA the clutch pedal has to be toward the floor no matter if the transmission is a neutral or in gear. It’s possible that lever switch maybe stuck. One thing to make sure that the pin is making the switch move. There are cases where the pin breaks off. The other thing I learned it’s very important that the mesh ground strap mount points are clean from engine to the chassis and starter motor bolts are free of corrosion too.

      To my astonishment when I changed out the clutch switch, just a couple months later it wouldn’t start again till I cleaned the mesh ground strap from engine at both ends as well as the starter bolts. Now it works fine.

    I got stranded a few days ago in my 2012 Fiat 500c when I engine-braked at a red light and my clutch pedal mysteriously rescinded (seemed to just disappear from under my left foot). I got it towed to a Fiat dealer service dept. But, it'll be a couple of weeks before they can look at it... Any theory about what broke? A little more than a year ago, the shifter cable itself had to be replaced..
    I love my Fiat; it's fun to drive. But, the manual shifter/transmission seems to be the weak link in an otherwise great car.

    • @fiatofgreenville
      @fiatofgreenville  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Harry... the clutch is hydraulic and uses brake fluid from the brake reservoir to make the clutch work. Check the fluid level under the hood near the battery, it its very low it could be a leaking hydraulic line or the throwout bearing assy. The fluid could be collecting inside the transmission case, so it may not be dripping out on the driveway.

      @@fiatofgreenville Thank you, Mr. Montgomery! Whenever I call the dealership service dept., they jabber about how long it takes to get parts in... Meanwhile, they haven't even looked at my car yet and close to two weeks have gone by.... A fellow at work today heard me describe the phenomenon and he spit out about it being a hydraulic issue. So, it's likely you're exactly right.... Now to get the dealer's people to stop jerkin' me around. I left them a phone message with what you suggested to look at...

    My 500 is now a driveway decoration for a week...
    i replace the switch.. still no crank.
    check the T20 relay nothing (switch to other relay, pull the relay and tested ouside given 12v and see if the relay is activated and i have connection in the other 2 pins)
    change the engine ground and clean the contact
    could be a problem in the wire of the switch. I know that is posible to scan it and check if the clutch position switch is activated or not.
    could be a problem with the ground on the starter? but if is the case the t20 relay should be activated?
    Thanks for your time...

      Hi Alonso, after I replaced mine everything worked great for quite a while and then it started doing it again. So I cleaned the grounds including the mesh ground strap but one thing that I did not clean was the positive cable that goes to the starter solenoid. It is inside a little black plastic case. I think sometimes water gets in that case and causes a little corrosion. So disconnect the solenoid post, use a 13 mm socket to loosen the positive wire, clean it tighten it back down reconnect the ground and try again.

      The shifter is cable actuated, they make a replacement repair kit sold on E bay. First be sure the cables under the shift boot are not binding and well lubricated. If they are kinked you may need to replace. www.ebay.com/itm/125041147617?fits=Submodel%3AAbarth%7CModel%3A500%7CMake%3AFiat&hash=item1d1d087ee1:g:VqsAAOSwIBRhsMek

    Can you replace this part without having to take the pedal box out?

    • @fiatofgreenville
      @fiatofgreenville  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Tony yes you can certainly replace it with the pedal box in there but I recommend taking out the seat to give you more room. Not sure what’s happening with your car but one thing to check is to make sure that the starter bolts don’t have a little corrosion on them. I slightly loosened them and tightened it back up and it seem to work very reliably. Typically this clutch switches don’t go bad a lot but you can get some corrosion at the ground strap near the starter and the starter bolts and that could be the source of your prissue

      @@fiatofgreenville Hey John, thanks for the quick response. I've actually managed to take the clutch safety out and cleaned the contact points on the PCB inside the safety, which were quite dirty. However it still doesn't start, so I'm going to give your advice regarding the ground strap. Any idea if there's a diagram available I can look at to help me locate it?

    • @fiatofgreenville
      @fiatofgreenville  4 роки тому +2

      @@tony_ypnar Just put the car up on ramps if possible, disconnect battery first and pull off the splash shield. Make sure there is no power to the vehicle since you are working with the starter. Find the starter, which is above the drivers side drive shaft on back of the engine. You will see a mesh ground strap in same area, loosen bolt and clean it up. Then you'll see a bolts fastening the starter motor to the block. Loosen those just a bit and retighten, which will clear any corrosion. While you're up there make sure the cables to the starter is tight. This is a good practice as over the years we have seen starters that have high resistance and especially when hot, won't start.
