Test Drive: 1993 Toyota Corolla

  • 2016 marks 60 years on the market for the Toyota Corolla, but there's perhaps no version more memorable to the masses than the seventh generation.
Introduced to North America in 1993, the Corolla's styling was a drastic departure from the outgoing version, featuring a larger, more rounded shape.
It also featured two engine choices: An upgraded 1.6-litre four-cylinder that made 105 horsepower, and a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that made 115 horsepower to go with 115 lb.-ft. of torque.
The tester Graeme Fletcher drove all those years ago featured the larger of the two engines mated to a five-speed manual transmission, which worked together to run from 0 to 100 km/h in just eight seconds-a more than respectable time even by today's standards.
Fuel economy, too, was impressive no matter the era, with the Corolla returning a combined 8.8 L/100 km combined city/highway over a 1,000-kilometre test.
About the only downside was the test car's $18,500 price tag-equivalent to more than $27,500 today when adjusting for inflation.

I have a 97 Corolla DX with the 1.8L Auto, only 75K miles. AC is still cold, no leaks, no noises, upgraded the sound system to modern standards, the paint still has gloss, AC knobs have fallen off, lost a hubcap, the rear view mirror dimming doesn't work, the steering wheel cover is loose/broken, but she still runs like a champ. For some reason Toyota used clipboard material for the inside of the door panels so the front passenger door panel inside it's deteriorating.

Great generation of Corolla. A nice blend of simplicity, reliability and good looks. Of course, it doesn't compare well on today's standards and expectations, but back then, and for many years, this generation was better than any before or after and held that distinction for quite a while. Still a few of these on the road, which is better than most other cars that old.

I've waxed the exterior real good but only a new paint job will make it shine like it does in the video. 168k miles, all belts and major parts around the engine are brand new. New suspension and tires, too. Doesn't burn or leak a drip of oil. Engine bay and undercarriage is bone dry.

Eventually I found one 15miles away, it pretty much needed another engine to pass emissions due to the piston rings and few other things. If not for emissions, the car would be able run and start all the time.

be aware that commenting about this 93 Corolla here might trigger a kid that probably regrets her purchase of 93 Honda Accord EX as she should have bought 93 Corolla instead.
There must be something wrong her car experience that makes she keep hating this particular Corolla model 🤔 maybe her car got hit and run by someone using 93 Corolla or her enemy rides 93 Corolla 🤣

This was my first car. Bought it new in 1993. It was LE version with 1.8 liters loaded. It ran like new all the way to 70k and my sister started driving it then we sold it after 12 years. This was the only car that was around the longest in the family.

Still have my 1994 Toyota Corolla
It’s one of the more rare top of the line models, same as the one in this test (nicer seats and fabric along with the red and amber insert in the center of the trunk between the taillights were as the lower models were just black plastic. Has to be one of, if not the best small car I have ever driven. Understated beauty. So well made and thought out. Even the interior plastics have an expensive look and feel to them. The car has so so so many miles on it, but still runs like a champ. (256k on the 1.8L and 4 speed auto) Only problem is being here in Pa...rust belt...she is rusting away. But still love it! It was repainted before I bought it years ago and it was done poorly so that doesn’t help. And I believe it was in an accident at some point. But the air conditioner is still ice cold! Lol
I’d love to find another one of these with no rust! A low mile, clean, rust free Corolla in good shape is would still easily be worth $5000, even being 24 years old!
I think this was about the highest high point Toyota had.
Still great cars and trucks, but some of the styling choices they are making are questionable. I hope they go back to the understated beauty and cohesiveness they used in cars like this one day
(Sorry for the long comment, just really have a soft spot for this wonderful car!)
