The best path for most is to get a cheap copy, play it and decide.
We got the version from Barns & Noble that had one expansion, so on the box said 1-5 players. We have played it with 5 players ... the I'm backing the 10th because it gets me all of it, and bumps the potential player count even higher.
We did the same with Season 2 of Marvel United ... it was easily available, we played, and decided to get it - - with anything that is already available it's the best path to an informed decision.
Firefly, the game is good and the love of firefly makes it even better because it triggers so much from the videos we have seen, often.

The Barnes and Noble edition was the entry point for me. I found all the existing expansions after that. I went in for the upgrade kit for the organizer, upgraded components, and stretch goals.

A few notes about this campaign. The base game is mediocre, but this is one that truly shines with the expansions. They add a lot of mechanisms that make it more than just a pick-up and deliver game.
Yes you will be able to buy the base game cheap because many who own just the base game are selling theirs to get the all-in pledge. This is because there is no option for those who own just the base game with no expansions. But fans will want everything. Casual players will want all the expansions to make the game better.
We love the game so I'm in for the upgrade kit. The storage solution alone is worth it. If the resin minis break, I still have my original unpainted minis I can use.

I guess the question is should a casual player who doesn't know they want everything need to jump in at this huge price point vs just the main game? I'm generally of the mind that expansions elevate the game, but never change it entirely. I think for a casual player to jump in at that 220 point without knowing they'll like the system or have the gaming stamina to actually learn and incorporate all the expansions is not the correct path. But I'm glad the expansions do elevate the experience

    • @boardgametotears
      @boardgametotears Рік тому +3

I should clarify that when I say casual player, I meant a non firefly fan. We have had firefly always go over well with medium to heavy gamers. However, a Firefly fan gave me their base game (how I got into it) when they didn't enjoy it.
I guess what I'm saying is the game really is better with expansions for fans and nonfans alike. But Ive already spent hundreds on the game getting everything I have, so the price point looks like a savings to me if I didn't have anything.

@@boardgametotears That’s an interesting point, but. That’s a massive price point and a ton to unpack to get it on the table, when you confirmed the base game doesn’t have that wow factor. I’m glad they kept at it until it got to that point! For me though it sounds like $300 to wait six months where it’ll honestly sit on my shelf while I play a dungeon crawler.

I love your vids. Fun humor. :)
I know these vids are for fun and a public service, and I usually agree with your points, some of what you said doesn't work for me and others.
Most of the cost of the pledge is for getting *everything*, some of which is very hard to find. The Crime and Punishment expansion? The Artful Dodger Firefly? The full Verse neoprene map? Short of having them remade on Etsy, that stuff is just not reasonably acquired. And now the minis are going to be painted and the whole thing sold at a discount? NICE
But here's the big one for me. The game has long since outgrown its boxes. I store mine in a two-row card box with the rules folded in. It looks like crap and always gets passed over by players looking over the collection for options. Go look how much they charge on Etsy for a wooden Firefly the game big box. It's as much as the Firefly crowdfunding! And at some point, I lost that big, beautiful neoprene map. Maybe when I moved...?
Point is, whether you're (1) a fan coming in with no posability of getting everything, (2) having lost or wore out something in the last 10 years, or (3) having everything and needing an authentic looking big box, the crowdfunding is a godsend.
Keep doing your thing, man. And never let anyone tell you that you need a catch phrase! XD

I'll agree that this is an expensive product but you've also misrepresented what is being offered with your price comparisons.
What's being offered is the complete collection for $220 USD while you've compared it to listings of the base game for $50 CAD and even though the listing with expansions has a starting bid of $100 USD the purchase price is $350 USD and that's without any of the additional content.
A better comparison would be looking at sold ebay listings and if you were to total up the costs, you're looking at well over $400 USD.

The value is there for the amount of content. The problem is that outside of the existing fans, it's a crazy asking price. For fans, it's a good deal. For anyone else, they should just by a cheap secondhand copy to see if the game is worth getting.

“If you take the Firefly name off the game, would you still buy it?” Great point. I’m very hesitant on this one. I lamented the cancellation of Firefly, was ecstatic to see the movie announcement, and enjoy GF9’s other Firefly board game. But I never did get into this one. Largely because the game didn’t speak to me outside of the theme. This, at first, seemed a great opportunity to get all of this stuff at once. But the price point is incredibly high. Thanks for the talking points. Gave me more to consider.

Awesome points! I canceled my pledge after finding one of the expansions NIS for $15. You can pick up the base game at most B&N in the US. It’s always there. I only picked it up because it was on a moving sale so I have the base plus the expansion for $35. Not a bad deal.
Either way I will wait for the rerelease of the expansions. If they don’t, that is their lose more than it is mine.

This is one of those games that has a 95% chance of sitting on a shelf and never being played. I may re-watch your video the day before the campaign ends - then will make the final call. I have a cheap base game with a few extra bits, Those extra bits add to a retail value of almost £100 (if it was currently available in bits), and the anniversary edition now retails for £200. To get all that's in that £200 box I'd have to spend at least £150-200 more to get my copy close to it. So I'm selling what I've got and have ordered the anniversary box.
I get what you are trying to say, but I think on a lot of them you are wrong or at least a bit off. The base game is simple, the additions grow it into something much better. The second-hand value of the base is cheap, but you can't compare that to the whole package with all the expansions.

  • @SteveRB511
    @SteveRB511 Рік тому +5

If only you had been more timely with this as it’s now too late for me - I’ve already pledged the Veterans upgrade and there’s no hope for going back. 😂
The things that sold me on the Firefly universe (series, movie, game) were the characters, some intriguing storylines (many of which were not fully developed due to the series cancellation) and the mixture of technology levels (which we similarly see on Earth now). I didn’t discover Firefly until it came out on DVD and when I found out that Fox had cancelled the series after only one season it felt like they had been all alone in the end zone and dropped the pass for the winning touchdown - their mismanagement of the series with things like episodes out of order and irregular viewing times are legendary.
There is not a lot of player interaction in the game and I find the pickup and deliver mechanic with dice rolling is okay. However, the major part part of the charm of the game for me is that it ties very much into the theme with characters, locations, and challenges which provide good prompts for a group that is inclined to do storytelling.
So, to answer your point #2, if it wasn’t for the IP it's doubtful I would be backing at the level that I am.

I disagree with the amount of luck involved. If your crew is well rounded with negotiations, guns and wrenches, and you crew is equipped with proper gear, the luck is cut way down. This boils down to planning your crew and taking safer jobs until you are ready. The cost, with all the expansions and the container, it is a pretty good deal. It's extremely hard to find the expansions. The basic game is very limited as it doesn't have a lot of player vs player aspects. That comes along with the expansions. The game with all the expansions is very good. It does take up a lot of real estate, a bit of time to set up, and depending on the scenario can take some time to play. The prices being stated are for the basic game, not for the expansions included.

Was hoping you'd convince me; you were so close! But,...I have to disagree. I played for the first time just yesterday,, and man it is a lot of FUN! So much damn charm went into the production of this game. It actually looks great on the table, beauty cards and BIG Damn Money! But the biggest negatives you didn't really touch on are: 1. It is HUGE, I mean, massive table hog. 2. It's a long game, especially if everyone is drinking...
Even with those cons though. The game charmed the pants off me. If you like casual fun with your friends, and the occasional screw over your friend antics, buy it!

The length was touched on with one with one of the numbers. But, yeah, it being a 3+ hour game that likely compounds with expansions is a reason not to back. It's going to be hard to table. I know, because my copy rarely makes it to the table. And, there's just better experiences for me if I have the players and time.

    • @ctoss1229
      @ctoss1229 Рік тому

@@VaultBoy13 True. I should have simply said the biggest negatives are the sheer size of the game, and how long it can take to finish it. But, for me at least, it is worth it. This game has some magic sauce if you're into it.
Sometimes I don't want a grinding out victory point experience or calculating turn optimizations. I'd rather explore the 'verse and aim to misbehave! Ya know? Have fun and hopefully I win, but if I don't, at least it was fun ride. I'm curious, what games are the better experience with the players and time? What would you rather be playing?

As someone who does like the Firefly game (I rated it 8/10 on BGG), I can't disagree with much that's said here - it's a solid list of reasons not to get the new version.
The new version is provided with all of the expansions - and they're not always easily available, certainly not in brand-new condition. The $100 ebay auction is only a starting bid - it would have been better to look up what price things sold for, rather than what they are listed at (as that is, very rarely, the final price). And the expansions all "fix" problems that existed in the base game box. The pirate expansion allowed more interaction between players, Blue Sun fixed the Reavers being such a boring side thing in the game and introduced a little bit of risk into flying. The base game, alone, is a lot more dull without these things.....
The anniversary comes with a complete Neoprene mat, which has a consolidated version of all the expansion maps. This is brand new and will be a good selling point.
Having played a game, last weekend, with one of my friends who didn't know the series - I will agree that the game is heavily based in familiarity and theme. If you don't know the show, it won't be as enjoyable as it will be for a fan. Each mission can be tracked back to the show, in some way. Even simple delivery missions have some kind of reference, with misbehaving missions being even more thematic. But, if you don't know the theme - it's just random words on a card.
If you don't love the show, then I'd understand why people wouldn't/shouldn't back this one. Great video!

I know this is old news. But i passed on this campaign even though I Love this game, and I prefer it over SW Outer Rim and Xia. The IP is a huge part of it, but there are little nods and details that bring out the firefly theme. The Ebay example wasn't fair when comparing it to what was being offered. Most of the examples when things were mentioned that the base game was available for C$30-50 Canadian Dollars, they often had a C$50 shipping cost, but the box includes the expansions, and they can clearly be seen at an outrageous price on ebay, both in this video, currently today and before the campaign too, simply because they are out of print. If someone is buying it to play it, the big box would have everything they could ever want from the game. The other points i found were fine and people could take it or leave it and depending on their preference. I personally passed on it because of a few reasons. I own the game with a few expansions, I didn't have the option of buying expansions I didn't have. it was either everything or a box with stuff I didn't need. I can print my own resin ships at better quality, I don't need more D6 special dice, the game came with enough, the box doesn't fit on my shelf. But for me the best news was that they are going to support the game going forward, after this has been delivered, they are going to reprint the expansions and the game. So I'm waiting for that and just buying what I want. It's good to have these videos, so that people are given a chance to make sure they want to invest in this. But reason 1, fell short, decks, expansions and ships are very much out of print.

Apparently you didn't do enough research, otherwise you would have known that the expansions add other jobs than pickup and deliver.
Also, using price as two reasons counts as one. Yet you never added up the cost of retail base plus expansions or promos or upgrades.
Did you ever consider that the glut of available Firefly base games is because of the Kickstarter?
As for length of game and randomness, that is easy to mitigate by having players start with more resources at the star.
I've played a partial game of Firefly and can say the theme/IP is represented well. This is something you only get from playing, not just reading rules and watching playthroughs.

I think you’re quick to disregard the romance people feel playing this game. It’s okay that you don’t feel it but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. What many people who complain about this game don’t understand is that this is a story game. It’s perfectly themed to allow the player to live some hours in the Firefly ‘Verse flying the black with friends. While those who don’t get it will complain in the comments about the game being too long, there is clear data there on GameFound that there are so many more who really do enjoy this game.
So I say to those who watched this, don’t let someone in the former camp tell you you’re not in the latter camp. Play the game and see for yourself. Find it in the rental library at your next local game con or a game store.
I do agree with two points in this video:
    1. The GameFound campaign is too expensive (yet it is the base game, all the expansions, and new expansions, which you’re not going to find anywhere for $50)
    2. Fans of the show do enjoy the game more because of the theme.
If you’re a fan of the show, you might love this game as much as I do.

In addition to the base game, nine expansions, one of which is unreleased, nine!!!
All the promo cards released over the years!
    A Big Box!
An insert, containing sleeved, over a thousand cards!
16 miniatures, yes of resin, but which you never mentioned, pre-painted!
A 20" x 50" neoprene mat, which fits inside the box!
The new solo mode, unlocked by the SG, of a different level, compared to the one contained in the old core, a solo mode that I have been playing for years in its fanmade version published on BGG, and beware that some of its new mechanics will also flow into the multiplayer games
    and I could go on...
This is the anniversary box that encompasses 10 years of a game's development, indeed it breathes life into the entire 'Verse to put it clearly. You can't debase it by saying it's just a luck-fest , a trivial pick and delivery, and find the base game for $50, because they are not the same thing.

UA-cam recommended this to me today for some reason. I don't know why considering the campaign you are talking about is long over, but out of curiosity, I watched.
And here is what I heard over and over: "Well, I'm told it's a bad game, I'm told it's just average, I'm told, I'm told, I'm told"
You are not an informed advisor helping people make informed decisions, you are a hater posing as a consumer advocate. I hope in the future when you do videos like this you will take the time to know about the thing you are making a video about. Take the time to play a game (I strongly suspect you can find someone in your area with the game who could introduce it to you).
If you don't like a game that you have *played* then you can present constructive criticisms about it. But if you don't like a game because someone else said not to like it, well then what really are you talking about?
I'm not going to block you from recommendations, but I hope your future videos about stuff like this are more informed as to the thing you are actually talking about because the game is very much an *opinion* game. It very much is one of those games that either you love it or you hate it, and so it gets an average score. But what do *you* think? Do *you* love it, or hate it? We have no idea from this. We have a list of deep thought sounding sound bites but no substance because you don't even know the mechanics you are referring to. For example, the luck issue, that's a huge part of the goal of the game is to balance crew and equipment for the best chances at completing certain types of missions. Luck is involved because the *main* game goal is to build a crew for whom luck is largely overcome. You don't know that though, and so you talk about the mechanics of the game without understanding them.
Many of your points are at least partially valid, but they come from a place of ignorance not information, and that's disappointing in a presenter who purports to be attempting to inform consumers.

I've read the rulebook and evaluated it based on a cost analysis from the campaign page, and try to expound upon what the campaign page specifically offers since that is mostly what people use for these sorts of things - and also when I say "I've heard" etc it's meant to aggregate additional voices so that it's not just my own, but clearly that has had the opposite effect. Most often for these campaigns there is a large amount of Fomo for games that don't yet exist, firefly being an exception since it's an anniversary edition the base game does exist, but since it does exist we actually have a TON more information than if it didn't by looking at the past. You can feel free to block me if you'd like, but I do my research on each title. I'll make that more clear though in future videos and appreciate the time you took to give that feedback.

I then also included it in my rankings of all the million dollar campaigns, or now that I think about it maybe it was so forgettable to me that I might have missed it. Either way, for games coming out in that particular year that raised over 1 million, for me it's bottom of the barrel, showing its age, and absolutely not worth the money. People have such an obsession with collecting everything that they don't recognize they won't use half of it and waste money on these sorts of all ins all the time. I'm quite a fan of the show, but even that doesn't hook me in - if you want my personal opinion stated succinctly and definitively, there you go. I believe it matches many others.

@@RoomandBoardReviews Read the rulebook is more understanding of the game than you implied in your video. Your video regularly implied that you'd heard enough to know not to get it, but that you had no direct experience with it.
Also, even as an avid board gamer, I would never claim I had a *clue* how the game would play based solely on a read of the manual. That gives you a sense only for the core mechanics and no idea how the various mechanics will interact with the various options in the game world.
An example I'll use is the Harry Potter Catch the Snitch game from about a year before this one. From the rule book, I thought it was utter trash and little more than a bit of posturing around a race. It turns out it's much more than that and there is a lot of strategy around how you let your opponent advance on the field and what that does for their place in the progress track. The "race" becomes more of a score track. That would not have been clear from just the rule book.

@@pilotbrian1 Whatever you'd like to think. I've read around 2000 rulebooks in the past three years, so I feel I've pretty adequately developed that skill. My track record has been pretty good for my own tastes.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. The idea of a Firefly game is exciting to me because I am a fan of the show, but on the flip side, I haven't bothered to look into the original version of this game - let alone purchase it - because, like you mentioned, it sounded like it was "just okay" and not special or interesting in any particular way. And it doesn't look like the game play will be improved in any way in this new edition.
Also, I don't have much experience with pick up & deliver games. I do enjoy this mechanic in Ahoy when playing a Smuggler, but that's a smaller, quicker game with other stuff to puzzle out like the dice management, area control, and combat between players. Not sure if I'd enjoy 3-4 hours of mostly pick up & deliver. I do enjoy Xia a lot, too, which does have plenty of pick up & deliver, but it has a lot more going on too.
I appreciate what you said about the reason you liked the show, and how this game doesn't provide much to capture those elements. It seems like maybe this a board game with a Firefly theme on top of it; as opposed to a Firefly game.

I really wanted this game as I love Firefly and greatly enjoyed my one play of this game when it first came out. To remember a specific play of a game ten years later means it must have been pretty great, right? However, though I expected it, I got major sticker shock when the campaign launched. At the same time I got a coupon from my favorite OLGS and convinced myself that picking up the expansion for Star Wars Outer Rim and a Folded Space insert world scratch the same itch and offer a better solo experience. Even after an update about an improved solo experience with Firefly, my plan worked. Of course, the Firefly campaign isn't over yet but I think I will remain strong...maybe.

    • @Rai0h
      @Rai0h Рік тому +1

You did right, the expansion of Outer Rim literally turns the game into a 2.0. The fact that you can now cross through the core makes getting around the galaxy a good bit easier and means you'll have few if any dead turns, while favors give a lot more interactivity between players, and ambitions let you solve the issue of anticlimactic endings. Even the solitaire play is much better now with much leaner decks, character card inserted into the AI decks, and a bounty hunter AI player in addition to the smuggler player. It's a perfect redesign of the base game.

You know that you have repeated “and I don’t have a catch phrase” so many times that it is your actual catchphrase. So I think you need to say now, “I used to not have a catch phrase, but now I do, and it’s I don’t have a catch phrase.” I’d love newer peeps to hear that and be like what the heck is this dude saying?!? 🤣 Ok, just say that once for me so I can laugh a lot and then carry on as usual. Or how about this…bribery! If you say it, I’ll finally became a Patreon, which I have been strongly considering because I love your content (and want voting access for the smack downs!). I had dug into this heavily this week as a fan of the series, and came to generally the same conclusion I just ordered Outer Rim with the Unfinished Business expansion. yeah... as somebody who did not watch Firefly despite it being something I would watch, this always looked to be somethng only for the IP fans. otherwise just get Xia (with expansion(s))... or take a look at Outer Rim with expansion, and quite likely you will have a better game roleplaying same fantasy, just with different characters. if you are a fan of IP, I guess just get it just to have it, and swallow the pill it's not a good deal, nor the best realization of a gaming idea out there

So why by the Platinum Dragon would I pay 5-8x as much for a game that without the dopamine drip I would utterly pass on? If I don’t want it enough to spend 50, I definitely shouldn’t purchase the gorram shiny version.
