I agree that psychotherapy functions as competing cults, or worse yet, fashionable "in" and "out" cults. Good luck trying to bring overcome these tribal impulses.

Burns' core practice is "a written debate meant to kill one side"...other debates: stock market, peer review, courts. Examples lacking "Intelligence Enhancing Debate:" Popularity contests(elections, cliques, most social encounters, etc). Burns: ~"killing thoughts requires finding fault, but finding fault, kills relationships... the treatment of one is the poison of the other."

Must be something seriously wrong with Dr David Burns to write almost 800 page book for people with depression.
Those people often have a problem to read a few page.

You don't need to read them all before you start using the book! I was able to use the book having picked about 5 pages that seemed relevant. And there are whole chapters I've never read e.g. on anti-depressants because I don't use any.

I read 3 pages and it was already making sense and midway it became my escape from depression
The exercises in the book work like magic and he gave me a new life. I attempted suicide twice before that book. I wouldn't say life is perfect now but now I have resources to cope and come out of these 'Cognitive Distortions'. You should read it. It'll change your life for good but be patient.
