It’s always good to hear the thinking out loud.
Thanks, I feel like it’s an important step. It’s not just the final product but how you get there that’s important
Looking real good. Amazed at how many trains you are running at once.😎
Thanks! I ran four at once for the first time the other day, it was amazing!
Great job!!! Strong Work!!! Impressive!
Thank you!
The canyon like area is easily my favorite.
It’s a cool spot indeed!
Looking fantastic, Dave. Dont change much of anything! 👈🚂
Thanks! Oh I’ll definitely change something, I can’t help it!
Cool carving techniques.
Thank you. It’s a process that’s always changing but it’s always fun
Looks AWESOME! once that is all finalized and painted up, you'll have a stand-out layout
Thanks! Hopefully I can get to some detailed scenic development soon!
Dave layout looking nice 😊
Thanks 👍
The large vertical difference between the levels is striking, the layout is developing a distinct look
Thanks. I’m realizing how high the newest level is. I have to stand on something to work on it!
This is very cool 😊 thank you Dave! Happy Railroading too U
Thanks so much 👍
That looks great! Looks like youve hit your stride and gettin it done now.
Thanks! Every once in a while I hit a groove for a few days. But my attention usually drifts eventually!
Looking good man!!!! Massive mountain!!!
Thanks! If the price of foam doesn’t keep going up, the mountains will get higher!
Fabulous work Dave love the way it looks the contrast is a great addition.
Thank you very much.
Great video Dave. That upper level is looking nice. I’m glad to see you’re making more progress.
Thanks Corey! If I was able to stay up late I would stay out in the garage and work. But every time I’m out there and it hits 9:30, I’m too tired to continue!
Awesome work Dave. Should look great once it is detailed.
Thanks. I sure hope so!
Looks good
Thanks
Looks good pretty neat good job
Thanks so much 👍
Like the result on the carving of the new vertical stacking turned out really well. Somehow, the overall visual looks majestic, like the mountains in western North America. The flat stacking mountain sides are more like the eastern mountain ranges: flatter and older. Nice combo of terrain effects, Dave.
Thanks. It’s been fun trying new things and see how they work out.
Awesome 😊
Thanks!
Looks good, Dave. I think the vertical stacked carvings came out looking a lot better than I thought it would. So good. In fact, you might need to start over with this technique on the lower levels. See what you started now.
Thanks. It’s always dangerous trying something new and resisting the urge to start over. But I’ve wanted to start this layout over probably 50 times already!
@dagryffyn hobby Thats a good one, Dave. If it helps, I've started mine over three times now and have absolutely no regrets. It definitely improved my initial design, and I think it will be the final draft.
Awesome!
Thank you!
maybe a trex head poking its head out a cave in the fantastic carved canyon.really great work all the way around.the layout keeps any viewer attention.
Thanks! My son keeps wanting me to put dinosaurs on the layout.
Four trains at once must sound Great! You need a camera on the ceiling to get the full effect!
Oh it’s loud! The upper upper doesn’t have roadbed yet, so that doesn’t help! I do have an extra security camera, I wonder if I could mount it on the ceiling and get a decent perspective. I’ll have to try. Thanks for the idea!
Great vidio Dave! I have to admit, I'm almost sold on your "foam" construction method. My layout is still a temporary method for use in my "Holiday Living Room Takeover" from Thanksgiving til New Years Day. If the day comes when I can have a permanent layout, I will do something similar to what you are doing. I'm also considering a bedroom "Shelf" type of layout as a possibility.
Thanks! Even for a temporary setup I think foam would work pretty well. It’s really light so moving it is easy. You could stack up a few pieces and carve them up and still be able to move it. Of course storage might be an issue 🤷♂️ A shelf layout could be fun too
Great work Dave! I had my doubts about that new section but you just put them to rest, it looks like dynamited rock all right, like the railroad blew the side of the mountain away to get the 'road through. It'll look even better when you get some paint on it.
A slight suggestion, you may want to save some small foam chunks to simulate talings at the base of the rock formation showing erosion is a problem that has to be dealt with on occasion.
"Beware of fallen rock!"
Fine video as usual, thanks!
Thanks! I have saved all the small scraps and do plan to add them back in as random rocks and slopes. Usually when I’m carving, slopes fry created and they look pretty good as is!
Hey Dave, awesome work on the multi level layout. I am much inspired to give at least some part of what you have accomplished a try. Being a Mr Rogers fan for myself, my kids and my grandchildren, I cannot help but see some similarity between your multi loop mountain and Mr Rogers land of make believe King Friday the 13th puppet character's Royal Castle complete with a trolly running around it. Anyway bravo for being such a layout inspiration to us all!
Thanks Bruce. I think that trolley was always my favorite part of that show!
This is wild work Dave! The mountain almost reminds of the one that was made for Michael Premacks layout from the great toy train layouts of America series from TM books and videos.
Thanks! 👍
🎶🎵"Well I'm standing next to a mountain......I chop it down with the edge of my old steak knife"🎶🎵🎸
- Jimi Hendrix.....probably😉👍
Definitely Jimi. Lol
I think that new mnt. Area and level looks better than your other Mnts. Prolly cause all the carving and hacking away you've been doing getting more experience and better at it
Thank you. I sure hope I’m getting better at it
WOW! Dave it's really looking great. I like that you are adding more loops of track. Is that 2' foam that you are using? By the way Great video my friend! 👍
Thanks my friend! Almost all of the layout is 2”. It’s more cost effective to buy thicker foam. Not that it’s cheap lol.
A fantasy landscape may require fantasy trains to look "right": don't be surprised if you find yourself a litte disappoimted with the way the scale stuff looks while be surprised at how good the Marx stuff looks in this setting.
That’s the great thing about a toy train layout! I tend to run types of equipment together, postwar, close to scale, flat out toy, I like the look of it all
I like the action of trains going by but too much I can’t see inside all the tunnels. But the layout is not for me it’s for you, Dave. Enjoy it the way you like.
Thanks! I know tunnels aren’t for everyone, but I like my trains to disappear, I feel like it makes the layout feel bigger. There is something to be said for being able to see the train as it makes its way around the table though.
Nice progress. The knife that was being used for the final sculpting, pocket knife, steak knife, or other?
Thanks! I was using mostly a stiff steak knife. I have another that’s more flexible.
