For a contrast in the same area of the Bible - someone who maybe should have updated their vow - I note 1 Samuel 14:24-46, where Jonathan more or less saves lives by not having known of a stupid no-eating vow from his dad King Saul, and the people are so grateful that they rescue him out of the consequences.

I was just reading this story today. I am not sure if Jephthah actually killed his daughter or not but the bible states that he did keep his vow. I am not sure how we can break vows knowing that story even if they are foolish.
I think there are times when breaking a wedding vow is also valid. If your spouse is breaking the wedding vows by not being loving for many years despite all efforts to improve the situation, then the contract is already broken at that point.
