    Government Job: Do this take home project
    Candidate: *does take home project*
    Government Job: We actually aren't looking for someone to fill the position anymore. That project has actually been completed.

  • @thesunabsolute
    @thesunabsolute 4 роки тому +21

    That government job was crazy. You made the right choice moving on. I don't think I've ever seen something like that asked of a potential candidate. That's essentially working for free, which unless you can show in your portfolio, you should never, ever do.

      Elliot Grey, I would have made an xml file for the data and make a simple dashboard app with a framework, they would never know. Lol

      I tuned out as soon as it had a section on designing. That's 100% not my job lol. I am not the creative party, I just make the UI that the UX team creates. Not doing both myself.

    Were you applying to JavaScript or Frontend Dev positions specifically? If I was applying for a ReactJs position do you think they'd ask me to make a vanilla JS mockup like that?

    • @tadeulima8805
      @tadeulima8805 Рік тому +1

      Yeah they do man!
      But its mostly to check if you know how to work with arrays (filter, includes, reduce, etc..) and objects (loops, spread)

  • @pureromanticatheart

    How much time were you allowed for the design question where you had to build a checkout page? Also what level did you apply for? Thank you for the video this was very helpful.

    • @PeterElbaum
      @PeterElbaum  4 роки тому +2

      pureromanticatheart thanks! Glad it was helpful. For that assignment, I had about 3-4 days but it was pretty flexible. I was somewhat conscious of not wanting to take too long, but that may have been self imposed. It was for a junior/entry level position. Hope that helps!

    The government job is asking for way too much. They need to provide a design and at least provide the data in an object we can just copy and paste into a variable in our code.

    • @BarryMichaelDoyle
      @BarryMichaelDoyle 2 роки тому

      I think it's a good test for your resourcefulness, e.g. if you can't convert that data into an object you'd probably be a terrible candidate for the job.

      @@PeterElbaum Your video helped me build the confidence I needed to smash an interview yesterday! I appreciated the honesty in your video. Devs often seem like these immortal, infallible super-humans, but you handled this video with a humble spirit admitting some of your mistakes in the code samples provided.

      Risa Lee that is awesome!! I’m so glad the video provided some tangible benefit. You definitely don’t have to have it all figured out-don’t believe the impostor syndrome! Thanks again for the encouragement...it’s given me motivation to get more videos out.

    Thank you so much for posting these questions from employers. I'm a recent js developer I recently updated my websites I build in html and css so I plan to start heading to applying towards companies in the next few weeks so since you been in the field for a minute now what core things would you suggest a vanilla js developer on what I'm going to mor likely see these days?.

    • @PeterElbaum
      @PeterElbaum  4 роки тому

      KidBrave thanks for your encouragement! It’s hard to say without knowing what kind of companies you’re applying to, but it could be anything from algorithm type questions (FizzBuzz, etc) to a take home project. I’d also suggest possibly looking into learning a framework since most FE app work these days is centered around that style of development.

      @@PeterElbaum absolutely brotha you gave us some great information!. I totally understand as far as me not having a specific company in mind for you to go off of... I honestly plan to applying to any and every company out there I'm just trying to get a start. I understand a framework is where it's at as far as building applications but I'm trying to jump into the field right now as a vanilla js developer and have a company groom me having me use there team current framework... when you started applying did you know a framework quite well?.

    • @PeterElbaum
      @PeterElbaum  4 роки тому

      KidBrave - yeah, I already had some familiarity with React. But the fundamentals are definitely the right place to start!

    • @MehdiGlz
      @MehdiGlz 3 роки тому

      I know it's been some time, but I strongly recommend learning React. Most (well paying) companies use React

      oneminutetomidnight 🤷🏻‍♂️ not sure what to tell you! To be honest, I never expected this video to get as many views as it has. That said, I’m not sure why it would be related to potholes. Perhaps you also enjoy web development content?

    What is the url for the last test - the one you didn't do? I wouldn't mind having a go as I'm stuck at home during the coronavirus mess. The last assignment I did for my current employer was making a react/typescript based app with graphql that had to work off line using cached data. It does annoy me that I have to keep doing these tests, POs don't have to do these things. They should see from my CV that I have been doing web development for 15 years and that should be enough. No other job expects you to prove you can do what you say you can. Does this annoy you too?

      I'm sure they do, but if every company randomized all questions most of us would never land a job, so some questions are general/standard/common. Believe me, just from asking a few 'tangential' questions they'll know if your skill level.

    It seems that author tried to sell his experience to other companies via youtube. He showed questions, answered to them, after told about his projects and showed it also and told what did he do.

    • @PeterElbaum
      @PeterElbaum  3 роки тому +2

      I’m not really sure what you’re getting at here. My intent is to help candidates, I’ve never sold questions to companies.
