Because the footage you see is only of pyongyang, and it's what they want you to see. The rare footage is the forbidden side of north korea very few films show...the starving people being tortured in labor camps.

They may not have a choice. These things are staged and planned. Not to mention that all tourists will have to go with a guide that will take you to places that you will have to go to and you cannot go anywhere else.

Recently they started letting journalists in because they want to spread their propoganda outside North Korea but it's still strict. That reporter won't be allowed to go wherever he wants and film whatever he wants. Instead there is someone with him probably a group who dictate where and what he can do. Do you think the BBC journalist choose to film at all these places knowing what the BBC is like and what they would like to do?
Notice how he doesn't get to speak with anyone on the street and ask questions? He only gets to speak to those who are loyalists, the ones who get all the benefits while the rest of their countrymen and woman live in poverty.

Why can't BBC find a reporter who can speak Korean?
Why can't BBC find a reporter who is less naive?
These people are being filmed on camera and you ask their opinion, you think they're going to say, Hey, Fat Kim is a real drag on the economy, and I'd love to go to South Korea to see if it's really like all those contraband CDs we watch (risking hard labor to do so)....

This is so biased to Pyongyang the people close to the Kim dynasty and those with lots of money can afford these things. The military and the elite classes get food but the majority of North Koreans are starving in prison camps, in cities and the countryside. Even farmers have their food taken off of them. If the BBC want to please Kim Jong Eun with this bullshit then they need to look at what human rights really are and how a country can be "rapidly developing" when people are starving on the streets.

I have seen other documentaries on North Korea and then this one by BBC.I have got to say BBC is in no comparison with others.Others , even in a controlled environment guarded by the guides, presented a true state of the people there, while BBC just depicted a false side of the story.Disappointed!

      "All those people are actors"
Yes and no, they are the most loyal to the North Korean Government and so they get benefits like a modern apartment with modern technology and the freedom to travel outside of North Korea if they choose along with getting cash.
They are acting but its not for our benefit, it's for their own. A mixture of fear and wanting to keep the benefits that they have.
