Perhaps someone has made this comment. But just for Holden and his girlfriend and others that don’t know…the mass enslavement of African people throughout the world leading to people being scattered and traumatized and the subsequent disconnect from Africa is a reality and community is known as the African Diaspora. So this isn’t referred to as immigration. It’s very much about the relationship between Africans and those of the diaspora who were ripped from their homeland. In some cases sold by other Africans. It’s about the reconciliation or lack there if between these communities.

yeah kinda surprised. she is hard to read at times. didn't feel like this was her favorite or that she liked ragnarok a ton (compared to her reaction to civil war for instance)
I’ve picked up on this as well but I actually appreciate this reaction style. Too many UA-cam react channels do these melodramatic, over exaggerated reactions while they’re watching and it kinda makes it feel faked. Jenn just takes the movie in and forms her opinion at the end.
i like watching this one RIGHT after Civil War because i think it's easier to recognize the CIA guy and make the connection with Bucky. It's also dealing with the aftermath of T'chaka's death, so it feels like it should be watched pretty immediately after civil war.
While it's funny in the context here... that line has very different context in the real world where a man shot up a massage parlor, killing multiple women that worked there, then the cops said "he was just having a bad day". While I dont take offense to it; it's legit the first thing that comes to my mind every time Jen or Holden says it.
it certainly looks like a good live action adaption for the uniform BUT Michael B Jordan apparently said it is most likely a coincidence. So to say that it IS Vegeta' Sayian Outfit is a manipulation. If you know a source that would confirm your words im taking back mine. For now I think Michael was not aware of the similarities of those costumes and is simply happy they are similar due to a coincidence. (There is a chance costume designers did that deliberately but i dont see evidence for that)
@@Myth777 he wasn’t aware that they actually put his thought into the costume, but he did say he mentioned Killmonger’s similarities to Vegeta to Coogler and Coogler put in some influence to the costume department about it
I forgot about Cat Man still makes me laugh when I hear it. Thanks Jen. Still love it when Jen asks a question and Holden can't answer and gets the "I'm gonna kill you look". @@ssamuel649 There's a behind the scenes episode on disney+ about his process for coming up with the score for the Mandalorian that's really interesting.
It’s kind of interesting how many MCU fans felt Black Panther was a solid film but not top tier, but a lot of those not invested in the comics or just binging (like Jen and Matt) really let the themes resonate with them and love it. Not hard to see where the billion dollar box office and academy award nominations came from
I really enjoyed it but it was a bit sloppy at times when it didn’t need to be. Structurally and story wise I cannot find a better mcu film, however the execution of the film at parts felt absolutely unnecessary. Like Holden said, some sequences just took me out of the experience. Why create something that looks obviously fake. If there is no other way to do a scene without horrible cgi then scrap those moments of the scene entirely. From when black Panther jumps from his ship in the very beginning and throws the beads to the train fight scene with late 90’s graphics, those scenes could have been swapped with real people and it would have made a 1000% difference. Again, going cgi is completely unnecessary. To me that’s like cging the scene when Killmonger kills claw. Exactly…it makes no sense. If you can’t film it in a persuasive enough of a way with cgi, make the scene simpler. Nobody will miss the bull shit.
Yeah, this isn't a top 5 MCU movie for me but it's still really good and both Matt and Jen considering it as a favorite really puts into perspective the appeal. I think the people who call it overhyped or overrated because of the cultural significance really lack any respect for general audiences. Hype can only bring a movie so far. Black Panther delivered.
Story summarized as: Child exiled out of their home to return as a man to fight for their rightful place as king. And had a forrest fever dream of ghost daddy. Conflict of open border is just a backdrop of a family feud. Killmonger technically has the rightful place of king because he is royalty, according to Wakandan laws of inheriting the throne. Well...when I first watched it, I was like this is basically blaxpoilation with Lion King if Simba was the villain and Scar was the good guy. With ideas of a closed country sprinkled in here and there. Amalgamation of a number of the different African cultures on just the surface level but obviously not knowing much about it, thus quickly cut away into space age tech to hide ignorance. Before you guys say because "Africa", not really. I wouldn't associate Lion King with Jetson technology. Look at how many scenes there are with "African culture" with scenes of futuristic technology.
@@ctakitimu No, you're correct; Xhosa has a click in the beginning. The "X" is a click. It's pronounced "(click)ohsa". Person that told you it's cowsuh probably just did a quick google search lol. You were correct from the start tho 👍🏾
"We're pescatarians." I love how with just two scenes, they turned M'Baku from just another cast away minor antagonist into one of the biggest and most entertaining supporting characters.
Calling Bucky "White Wolf" was significant. The White Wolf is the name of the first immigrant in Wakanda, and the Wakandans are notoriously xenophobic, so things will not be easy for him.
The reason why Klaue’s henchman spotted Okoye is because they’re from South Africa where they speak Xthosa like Wakandans so he recognized the language

I love Black Panther. As a black (now) man I was very proud of this movie. Especially in Mr. Boseman. Having grown up with him playing in SO many iconic roles I couldn't help but tear up throughout the movie. I was just impressed with his acting and the hard roles he took on. He was like a real life superhero to me. Now to know that he's gone is painful, even though I didn't know him personally. He was on the road to be the mosta iconic black actor, and potentially even the most iconic actor of all time. I remember watching an interview about him talking to children with cancer and him crying about the seemingly helpless situation they were in; all the while hiding from the world (even Disney) that he was sick himself. The man was tough. I wish he was still here.
Unfortunately Thor Ragnarok, Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp and Black Panther were all in production at the same time and BP got the short end of the stick with the VFX Team for that sequence and the ridiculously short time they were given to work on it (about 6wks instead of the usual 4-6 months). This feels like one of Marvel's more complete films to me. It has a strong list of supporting characters and is more thematic. The supporting characters help influence T'Challa development well, and the villain changes him forever (which marks a good villain in my eyes).
Wait, I just realized that the scene where T'challa is in Korea, about to kill Klaue in front of all the people, thats very similar to John Walker in FATWS. Except the outcome was different. Very cool to see.
Yep, you guys hit on the tragedy of Killmonger perfectly. If he had received the same love that T'Challa was given growing up he could have been a great asset to the kingdom. Instead he was left to fend for himself and grew up with hate and resentment.
you asked eariler "is that a real language" The language used for Wakandan is Xhosa. Its frequently spoken in the west of south africa I believe and the actor of King T'chaka (T'challas father) is one of the ones that speaks it fluently. Chadwick Boseman actually studied Xhosa to nail the accent he uses for T'challa as he is american!
Holden & Jenn, thank you so much for another amazing video. This one meant a lot to me not only because Black Panther is one of my favorite films of all time, but also because I lost a good friend the other day. It’s been a rough couple of days. She was also a huge Marvel fan and just having this video to watch today brightened not just my day, but also my entire week. Thank you both so much for continuing to create amazing content for all of us.

I feel a lot of people dislike this movie because of Killmonger. His motivation is justified. His reasoning is sound. And his plan is the same as many European nations...we have better weapons so let's take what we want.
I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who didn't like this movie because of Killmonger. He's one of the best villains in the MCU. And one of the best parts of this movie.
@@PhilBagels I dislike Killmonger very much. he is stupid and wrong about literally everything. his motivations are that of someone who has never been outside of Los Angeles and knows nothing of the rest of the world. and why did he wait until after the man that wronged him died and then go after the son who didn't even know what had happened? why did he CHOOSE to be a CIA assassin instead of going to Wakanda when he was young? Killmonger is not even as compelling as Whiplash and WAY less interesting than Klaw. he is a terrible villain overall and ruins an otherwise great movie
@@makz524 I dislike him too. I just mean that he's a "good" villain from a literary standpoint. He's evil, but not mindlessly evil. He's motivated by revenge and selfishness. And his motivations are clear and well-acted. We get to see into his character, into just what kind of person he is (a terrible person) and why. Unlike some of the other MCU villains like Malekith or Killian or that completely forgettable guy from Doctor Strange. And I also agree with you that Klaw was a more interesting character. I think there are a number of reasons to dislike this movie, but I don't think Killmonger is one of them. The main thing I didn't like is the deus-ex-machina Vibranium - and unlimited supply of magic metal that does everything you need it to do. Wakanda is an entire nation of Mary-Sues. And the ridiculous succession-by-arena-fight. Really? The most technologically advanced nation on earth, with the most primitive form of government ever. And yes, everything AirunDevon said is wrong. Including that Killmonger is the reason people dislike this movie.
This is an instance where getting reactions to the deleted scenes would be advantageous. The deleted scene of Okoye and her fiance's argument after the kilmonger challenge is written & acted beautifully.
When people first started speculating about which characters beyond the original MCU Avengers were going to start showing up, the two that I wanted Marvel to do were Doctor Strange and Black Panther. Not only did we get both of them, but both movies are among my favorites in the MCU.
The tattoo on the lip is "vibranium ink" and, if I'm not mistaken, it's given only to Wakandan Wardogs (basically the CIA of Wakanda). Or sum'n like that.
Two things that will make you sad. One, when Killmonger first went to the land of the ancestors, he saw only the dingy apartment he lived in with his dad instead of the open savannah with all the other kings. Two, the opening dialog is not young T'Challa with his father T'Chakka, but young Killmonger with his father N'Jobu.
Is it just me who is still almost in denial that Chadwick is no longer with us? Like even though it's almost been a year, it still hasn't really sunken in yet. Everytime someone mentions his passing i still get surprised idk why, it's like my mind hasn't accepted that reality yet... Rest in power, King😔🙏🏼 you are missed🖤
I think my favorite part of this movie is how T’challa mirrors MLK while Killmonger mirrors Malcolm X, both agreeing on basic principles but having completely different ways of going about creating change. Ryan Coogler is a badass.
You are forever in our hearts Chadwick. In your short time in the MCU you made a huge impact. What does make Chadwicks performance in these movies more fantastic, he was in the middle of his stage 3 cancer. To be this in shape and active with that
As soon as Jen asked who's the director, I knew she was hooked. This movie, although mcu formulaic, was elevated with its themes and acting. Killmonger made me tear up for him more than once
Holden did a great job addressing one of the other topics that runs throughout this movie is the tension between Africans and African Americans....if you google "The African Diaspora" you learn about this conflict...in a nutshell African Americans are aware that Africans helped White Slave owners so that some African tribes could gain more power...their is a sense of strong betrayal between the two groups....that's why Killmonger makes a reference to slave ships before he dies
Chadwick Boseman repeatedly said that it was his dream to be chosen for the Black Panther role. I'm glad he achieved his dream before his untimely passing. Also The young king TChaka at the start of the movie was portrayed by south African actor Atandwa Kani who also happens to be the real life son of John Kani who portrayed the older King TChaka we see in the ancestral panther realm. A real life father & son teamup.
When you get caught up with the MCU, you should propose and make Jen your fiancee, so that you can start "My FIANCEE watches [insert title here] for the first time"
I love Jen reaction and respected her opinion about this film. I love her intake and thoughts about it. I think she made some really good points. I wonder now that she is caught up if this is still one of her top 5. Also Jen Idk if Holden told you but Black Panther is also the first comic book film in history to be nominated for best picture at the Oscar's. It's did win for costumes and the music. Just so you know.
Yes Jen we love M’Baku too! 😍💕👏🏽 RIP Chadwick! This movie was great when it came out but now knowing all what he was going through and the Love he experienced when this came out makes much more beautiful now. I know it had to be bittersweet for him. Rest in peace king.
The intro part with Black Panther and Nakia is so clear on this screen. I remember watching it in theaters and even when I first got it on DVD, the scene set up was so dark you could barely see.
Anyone can challenge him for king but he can just say no (although that will hurt his image ofcourse). But during that specific event he can't reject a challenge
True. He would look like a coward and less fit for the throne. But he could have declined and still made Killmonger a great ally...only if Kill wills it
I think this quote fits killmonger perfectly - "The Child Who is Not Embraced by the Village Will Burn it Down to Feel its Warmth"
Wait that's Naruto

Petition for Holden to start making “everyone has their bad days” merch.
While it's funny in the context here... that line has very different context in the real world where a man shot up a massage parlor, killing multiple women that worked there, then the cops said "he was just having a bad day".
While I dont take offense to it; it's legit the first thing that comes to my mind every time Jen or Holden says it.

Such a great uniform
I was waiting for it too... but i dont think Jen is up to date on her DBZ.
it certainly looks like a good live action adaption for the uniform BUT Michael B Jordan apparently said it is most likely a coincidence. So to say that it IS Vegeta' Sayian Outfit is a manipulation. If you know a source that would confirm your words im taking back mine. For now I think Michael was not aware of the similarities of those costumes and is simply happy they are similar due to a coincidence. She picked up on my biggest issue with this film: the final fight between BP and Killmonger was underwhelming especially the CGI of it.
Its because they had only 3 weeks to do the cgi
Unfortunately Thor Ragnarok, Infinity War, Ant-Man & The Wasp and Black Panther were all in production at the same time and BP got the short end of the stick with the VFX Team for that sequence and the ridiculously short time they were given to work on it (about 6wks instead of the usual 4-6 months). Yes! 42 was the first movie I saw of Chadwick Boseman. It’s so good.

@@VonJay the cgi was bad because Black Panther and Antman 2 and infinity war were worked on at the same time and BP got the short end of the stick

Killmonger is not even as compelling as Whiplash and WAY less interesting than Klaw. he is a terrible villain overall and ruins an otherwise great movie
amazing. everything you just said is wrong. that was not even his plan. killmonger is a terrible villain
