I started self-teaching a little over 2 years ago. I did most of my learning by ear (I still do, but I have been gradually taking lessons to understand how to read sheet music.) I inadvertently discovered the patterns and relationships between major and minor scales extremely early, however I did not have the music theory terminology to explain what I had figured out. I am very much a practical learner, and while I tried to learn scales the "traditional" way, I found it way too exhausting and boring. I wanted to play music, dammit! Even if it was simple nursery rhymes, I didn't care.
It was learning things by ear that helped me find the "hands on" approach I needed in order to understand the relationships between major and minor scales, and by extension, their intervals. I discovered intervals extremely early when I first tried to take something I could already play, and work out how to play it in a new key by ear. Basically, if the first note of the melody started on G, I'd try shifting it up to A and see if I could work out the fingerings to get that to sound right from that new starting position.
It was exercises like this which eventually made something click in my brain. One day I was like "wait, this is different, but it still sounds the same? why is that?", I realized that even though the melody I was playing in a different key was of course using different notes, I noticed that the _physical_ gaps between them seemed to be more or less the same. In fact, they were so much the same that I could even use almost identical fingerings to the original key I learned it in. Fascinating! I figured this had something to do with it, with why it still managed to sound the same even though I was playing entirely different notes. I just didn't know what the word was for this relationship.
Through all of this experimentation, I ended up inadvertently exploring every major and minor key and scale on the piano. I certainly can't name all of them, nor would I be able to run through a scale if a teacher tells me to go through B flat major. But if I was told to play something _in a new key_ I could very quickly transpose it. I gradually went from constantly stumbling and trying to remember what the next note is supposed to be, to just instinctively knowing, even on things that are new to my ears.
It's kind of funny how I functionally learned many of these core concepts backwards. When my teacher showed me a page with intervals on it, I just instantly knew what it was, even if I couldn't read what the notes were. I saw the spaces, I saw the lines, and I was like "hey wait, that's a perfect fifth, right?". She then named off a bunch of intervals and told me to play them. And then it just clicked, I was like "wait, this is how people get really good at sightreading, isn't it? They don't look at the notes, they look at the gaps between them?"
Going a step further, the anagrams for learning the line and space positions on each clef weren't really helpful to me. And then I was just staring at the grand staff, and I thought "this is literally just the whole frickin' piano, isn't it? That's why bass is transposed differently, so it can lead into treble." Once I made that connection I no longer had to think "crap, is that an A? Uhh, let me count the lines." I'd see the line or spaces around it and quickly know what it was, just from visualizing a piano with keys instead of lines and spaces.
Having said all of that, scales are very important. Once you actually _UNDERSTAND_ the relationship between them, how they're built, etc it provides a very critical foundation to understanding the rest of music theory. Even before you know all of this theory stuff with them, the simple mechanical action of running through various scales helps you in all sorts of technical ways too. Don't shrug off your scales! They're important! I would probably be a _much_ better player by now if I put in a lot of time to learn them when I first started.

I credit my teacher for forcing me to do scales that now even all this time I can put my hands on a piano and I feel at home.

Get used to the keys first!! They also have worksheets to help you with that. :) once you know your keys, you’ll learn to read music.. of course it’ll start off a bit slow, but it helps with hand eye coordination. :) once you know your keys, you just gotta learn to read the music! Once you can read you’ll know the key placements a bit better.

U need to find ur reason and stick to and practice as much as u can. Otherwise itll fly by u. When u see a young child playing extremely well remeber even they werent born with the skill thwy had to learn it and so will u. With time and practice and a balancwd life u can achieve whatever u want.
