Crystal Bowersox was my favourite from the beginning of that season of American Idol. I fell in love with her when she sang her version of this classic song.
I don't think so. Janis had that raw, scratchy voice filled with blues and soul. This woman is incredibly talented for sure. But she does this song in a more melodic way then Janis did.
Lyrics: Busted flat in Baton Rouge, headin' for the trains, Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans. Bobby thumbed a diesel down just before it rained, Took us all the way to New Orleans. Took my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana And was blowin' sad while Bobby sang the blues, With them windshield wipers slappin' time and Bobby clappin' hands we finally sang up every song That driver knew. Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose, And nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free, Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues, And buddy, that was good enough for me, Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee. From the coalmines of Kentucky to the California sun, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul, Standin' right beside me through everythin' I done, And every night she kept me from the cold.
Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord, I let her slip away, She was lookin' for the love I hope she'll find, Well, I'd trade all my tomorrows for a single yesterday, Holdin' Bobby's body close to mine. Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose, And nothin' left was all she left to me, Feelin' good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues, And buddy, that was good enough for me. Good enough for me and Bobby McGee.
Well, when you get 2:00 or less to cover a song that was a 4:09 radio single (Janis) or 4:23 album cut (Kristofferson) -- you have to know where to cut. She did, and did it well.
Not at all, most Female versions take a run at Janis Joplin, she (Crystal Bowersox) took a middle road with either a tamed version of Janis or Folk version of Pink. Pinks version was Ok.
@@1313s Interesting reply. You do know that my comment was supposed to be humour based on your misspelling of JJ's name. If that somehow gives you insight into my psych profile I guess you're ready to be a profiler. -Cheers, PS. The spelling of her name is not an "opinion".
No one can equal Janis Joplin's iconic performance of this song, so it really takes a lot of guts to try. Many have tried, many have failed. This is a great performance! Somewhere, Janis is smiling.
I was so disappointed when she didn't win that season.... She already had her style and her story behind her life and her own musical ability with her vocals and her guitar she should have won❤
Impressive. Even without all the lyrics of the whole song, it showcased her talent. My opinion doesn't matter, but I just wanted to say it touched me.Like many have commented, of course Joplin comes to mind. Some of us were alive then. This song was on her Pearl( nickname) album. It became her signature song. She died 4 months later after completing PEARL,her final album. I think this girl should get in a studio and live her dream, also. In my opinion, for whatever that's worth .
@@fredperucki4851 I figured. Loved the way she structured it to fit the time constraints. I don't watch the show. It popped up on you tube and I love the song, so I gave it a listen. Glad I did.
Still a professional musician, but AI was the highlight of her career. A list of her discography includes a 2017 live recording and a 2022 studio effort, but with no release date, label, or format.
Not that much farther. She cut her dreads, fixed her tooth and sings religious music a lot. Someone must’ve told her she must do that so not sure she stayed true to herself. Sad. I was hopeful.
I seen her live at a small little venue in my hometown and she was AMAZING. She has some songs out. She tours and hangs with her kids. Her son has some health problems, so she put it on hold for a while, but she's out there.
Soul, blues, blues-rock, psychedelic-rock -- but not mainstream rock. Her only mainstream solo hit was this song more or less, country, folk and blues with some rock flair on the vocals.
Janis' lyrics are nonsensical and childish, yet her melodic and stylistic take is without fault. Please, to any future coverers of this song, for the love of all that is holy...use Kris' original lyrics...you know... the ones that actually make sense. Waiting for a train? What the hell is that? Is she wearing a pretty dress and holding a hatbox while daintily sitting on a pleasant and well located bench on the platform? Heading for the trains (trains pural!) heading for the trains. F'n kids.
Crystal Bowersox was my favourite from the beginning of that season of American Idol. I fell in love with her when she sang her version of this classic song.
Just come across by chance, I loved her. I had forgotten all about her (I live in Scotland). Is she still making music??
Oh we miss you janis!!!!!! This girl can sing, YES but there will never be another Joplin, bring back the old days please 🙏
When I get my time machine that will be my first stop.
Please!!
DANG I was THERE for Janis. This beautiful young lady actually REMINDS me of Janice!! You GO girl.........
I don't think so. Janis had that raw, scratchy voice filled with blues and soul. This woman is incredibly talented for sure. But she does this song in a more melodic way then Janis did.
I made a painting of Crystal in Toledo when she was 16 years old. She had written 35 songs by then.
Amazing.
You have a great voice & perfomance, love your singing!
Best ever version
No, that would the recording Pink did for AOL Sessions in 2003.
Very well done . Liked this very much .good talent . Keep going if this is your dream. I wish you much Luck and happiness .
You go girl, great rendition of song of Judy
isn't it written by Kristofferson
Yes it is
Yes it was. My band Hodgepodge covers this song. With our rhythm guitarist and also one of the singers Debbie on lead vocals
And Fred Foster.
She’s fabulous!!!
Yep
Fantastic

She’s good.
Yeah she's good I can sing that like that too that's my favorite one to sing
She was my pick.
I was hoping she would win
Definitely one of the best contestants ever on AI

👍
wheres the studio version!!
You understand I got everyone involved
Better than Janis Joplin, imo! I remembered this from 14 years ago.
Super extra
When she didn't win I knew it was rigged. Never watched it again.
I wouldn't go quite as far as saying it was rigged but it was a big let down for me. Apparently Simon felt the same way too.
Joplin sang it but it was Kris Kristofferson"s song.
Didn't she leave a part out!??!

JANIS did NOT own that song.
That is not Janice Joplin

Thanks for the update on that you damaged ass clown
And it's not JANIS Joplin either, but then again neither of them was the original artist, writer, arranger etc.

Perfect voice perfect performance Janice would be very proud of you!
Was robbed. Dominated the entire season.
Haven’t watched the show since.
True greatness brings a tear to your eye.
Impossible song to cover.
Makes me crazy when they don't sing each verse or completely leaves it out
Nothing to take from this but, listen to Pinks version. Talk about mind blown! Raspy and vibrato like Janis herself. And is the full acoustic version.

Pink
13 years later, and this gal still gives me goosebumps whatever she's singing!
I found it horrible.
I was so disappointed when she didn't win that season.... She already had her style and her story behind her life and her own musical ability with her vocals and her guitar she should have won❤
Excellent!!!!!!!
One of the few singers around with proper breath support. Great high notes.

obviously she sings some country song. so we learn there is only one relevant version, that from Janis Joplin
I didn’t think she was very good to be honest. Just a bog standard karaoke or open mic pub singer.
My favourite programme at the time.
Mercedes Benz!!
Absolutely beautiful
She did perfecly congradulation .❤
I like Janis Joplin alot she was one of the first Queens of Rock
But we all know Kris Kristofferson wrote and sang "Me and Bobby McGee"
Soul, blues, blues-rock, psychedelic-rock -- but not mainstream rock. Her only mainstream solo hit was this song more or less, country, folk and blues with some rock flair on the vocals.
Sorry, Janis has the all-time greatest version of this song. The passion and intensity spills out from her voice when she sings. RIP JJ.
Check out pinks version!!!!!
Love that song Sweden Janne
She was something special ❤
She really sang that song
Antiquated ‼️💯‼️
She sings this great!!!!
That was terrible

NO, just no.
I had the pleasure of meeting Crystal in Malone New York. She was playing in the county fair! I met her at a bar close to the fair grounds! 8/13/2011
Janis Joplin rolled in her grave and Kris Kristofferson farted.
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm surprised janis didn't do a Lazarus and drag her off stage 🙈 in all fairness she tried her best but nobody will ever be like our Janis ✌
