I'd infect bashir with a Cardassian std. One that was harmless to humans, but deadly to Cardassians. Then let nature take its course. (Cmon, even as a young teenager, I could feel the sexual tension between that pair)
I do love how we never find out what Garak did nor why he was banished in detail, yet we learn all we need to: Garak did something that Tain viewed as a betrayal but that Garak didn't see as such, and Tain exhiled him. It's really efficient story telling and really in keeping with Garaks secretive nature. Plus, it really ties in well with the later episodes expansion of this history between them. Excellent episode.
@dm121984 The reasons are covered in the book a Stitch in time written my Mr Andrew 'Garack' Robinson himself. A brilliant read and a great catch up on the DS9 gang.
@@KingSidJames What Garak *tells Julian* is the reason is covered by that book. I wouldn't like it nearly so much if I was obligated to take it as literal truth, rather than Garak trying to tell Julian true things about himself through a story that may have resemblance to reality.
Hmmm. My preferred reading of Odo and Garak interacting in the shuttle isn’t that Garak outright knows how Odo feels about Kira. I think much like Odo’s own speculations regarding Garak’s personal ties to Tain and Neela that Garak is making some pointed observations of his own. Neither man knows for certain the full story, but each are smart enough to guess at some of the cards the other player has in their hand (if you will). I like the two being on equal footing, each maneuvering around one another. It’s part of what makes the episode enjoyable.
The emotion in Garak's voice when he says "I never betrayed you" to Tain was a brilliant bit of acting by Robinson's part, especially considering how rare it is for his character to show any such emotions.
This is definitely a fun 2 parter. Brings together several stories that were just hinted at and flushes out Plain Simple Garak by himself without the good Doctor interfering.
"YOU BLEW UP YOUR OWN SHOP!" is one of my favourite moments in the entire series, as is the whole scene with the 'perfume merchant'. Auberjonois was magnetic and we're worse off from his passing.
This whole episode was a meta bit of misdirection. They didn't originally plan it to be a 2 parter, or at least not such a dramatic one. The whole two parter was done "Seat of Our Pants" like a lot of trek two parters, because Best of Both Worlds did it so well. This one ended up working as well because all the writers and actors involved had firm ideas of how their characters would function, and the end result was something that needed to happen. If "A Die Is Cast" had never happened, then everything in future episodes would have a background thought of "Everyone knows where the founders homeworld is! Why don't they bomb it? Why is Section 31 able to prance about so much? Aren't they worried about the Tal Shiar and Obsidian Order? Why do the Romulans and Cardassians suddenly suck at espionage?" And all of that came from an episode that was originally going to end because of a gag with Bashir and an isolinear chip.
Tain had to know Garak would be tipped off. The other assassinations were probably set up much more discretely. After learning what we do later in the show, Tain probably set up Garak's intentionally poorly, hoping all along for the reunion in the Romulan wardroom and its outcome.
It's generally considered to be the tan don ( which is the military intelligence of the navy as opposed to the "civilian" intelligence tao shir) that intended to close the wormhole. 13:26
"Take this rod and eat it" and Garak gives his 'dear doctor' some chocolates. I swear the writers knew what they did with that line. It's a damn shame they couldn't just let Garak and Bashir be a thing, cause both actors play it like the characters are into each other! No, instead later we get women shoved onto them cause ya know...we can't have gays or something. Still kudos to Andrew Robinson for how he played Garak during those bits, more confused at why she keeps coming onto him despite him not showing any romantic interest in her.
That episode with Blossum, Bubbles, And Buttercup. The mating call for them is if a man treats BADLY. Enabran Tain AND Gaul Dukat have done VERY bad things to others AND Garak. Just throwing that out there.
The scene where Garak tells Bashir about the data rod was, apparently, an in joke. Originally this was going to be one episode. And the data rod was Garak’s way to blackmail Tain. Essentially the episode would have ended with Garak saying ‘If you don’t let us go all your secrets will be revealed.’
It's the first sign that Mila is some sort of Maternal relationship for P.S Garak. She asked him to do something and he agreed without trying to argue or negotiate with her.. When your mom asks you to do something you don't want to do... You still do it.. Because it's your mom.
We never get all the details but 7 seasons leaks out enough facts to eventually get a good idea of who Garak really was. Tain's ties to him likewise take time & they play the long game on a detail with Mila at the end.
As a bit of a Shakespeare buff, married to a very big Shakespeare buff, Julius Caesar is a terrible choice for a cardigan. Give them Romeo and Juliet as a dark comedy and cautionary tale. They’d lap that up.
What bothered me about the discussion was them glossing over the events being historically accurate, as if Garak was trying to imply Shakespeare was bad at crafting a plot
Today's Thought Experiment: I have just employed you to provide an unfortunate accident for Plain, Simple Garak. How're you doing the deed?
Upside down clock on a detonator for when Garak tries to plant his own bomb. Instead of 1 minute it's 1 second.
That'll take some beating.
Holographic murder twink

A detonator inside a spool of thread, with the thread as the pull tab. You must have this seam fixed this evening.
2:30 it's hilarious how Odo mentioning his lack of lungs was a perfect way to convince the Flaxen that he was willing to fill the room with poison.
With two meatbag security officers in the room too..

Ah the episodes where DS9 starts to really take off to greatness IMHO.

Yeah, and the immediate "At least, not in my heart" comes across as an immediate attempt to cover for it. It's a great moment.

1:36 "Around the blast site. Oder thinks it was a smell-activated device installed by the Flatulens." If only Garrak hadn't had beans for lunch!

Merry xmas UL ... thank you for making these
Thank you, and a Merry Crumbles to you all!

Ahh yes, I remember this one.. 'twas a good 2 parter.
Merry Christmas to you and your UL and also all the viewers too! 🥳
Can we call this "Cardigan Logic" when Plain Simple Garak accept to join Enabran Tain, a man who just tried to kill him. 😁

Plain simple Christmas Holidays! ;)

He's having a lunch with neelix. He then says 'I'm going for a bit fresh air'. He then meets tuvok. And happily the airlock slowly opens.
Garak believes in coincides. Coincides happen all the time.
He doesn't trust coincides though.
Now i have to rewatch. Im not sure if i caught tge threat. Now i need to aee it though.
I had completely forgotten that Mila made an appearance prior to the series finale three parter. I liked her character and the portrayal.
It's the first sign that Mila is some sort of Maternal relationship for P.S Garak. She asked him to do something and he agreed without trying to argue or negotiate with her.. When your mom asks you to do something you don't want to do... You still do it.. Because it's your mom.

One of my favorite episodes in combination with the second half. I remember asking a friend to tape it for me. Pretty sure I got that somewhere still.
On the bright side Space Dog, Free Bed and Board... Woof!
It's the next episode that gets brutal.
Happy Hogswatch everyone!
Happy Hogswatch! GNU TP
