Memphis is probably going to get 11-12 million from the AAC, same with Tulane, because they decided to stay in the American. Plus, remember schools are going to need to put aside 20 million to pay athletes. I don't think Memphis is going to want to waste so much money traveling to the West Coast.
Memphis is digging its own grave staying in the AAC. I don't care if they make 15 million a year in this league. The fans are out on the AAC. Look at decreased attendance over the last 7 years. All our rivals our Memphis crowds cared about are in the X12 and ACC Now. We don't support the AAC anymore!
The Pac 12 needs Memphis but it will cost a lot of money to get them 20 million exit fee plus they need 12-15 million a year to make it work. You then need a travel partner you probably are looking at a Texas State lower exit fee to leave Sunbealt conference. To be honest there are not that many schools left to pick from at this point .This will all come down to money from tv deal.
I think the PAC is aiming to get Memphis, Tulane, and Texas State. Maybe Texas State gets added for ‘26 and the other two have to wait for ‘27, but I think that’s the goal for now and then wait until the 2030s to see where the ACC stands and how UTSA, UNLV or USF look. Still hope the PAC looks at some non-football schools like Wichita and GCU though.
Those schools aren't going to pay the exit fees, plus putting aside 20 million to pay athletes, the American already said they would pay Tulane and the rest for staying, so Tulane and Memphis are probably going to make 11-12 million a year.
@charleswebsterjr.6350 Why do that when they can get good competition in the PAC-12 without facing too many strong teams and ending up middle of the pack?
New Mexico State and Texas State seem like more likely fits imo. UNLV as well if they decide to leave the MW. It just seems like they'd rather be the best in the MW than compete in a new look Pac.
Any team the PAC12 wants to invite will have to spend a lot of money. The AAC exit fees is nearly $20M, the PAC12 will need a very good media deal to help with the exit fees. Lets not forget, they have to deal with all the Mountain West poaching fee.
If the AAC schools are too expensive (and they may be), the following are rough equivalents, certainly to Memphis, from a media viewership standpoint, and they won’t cost as much: 1. Texas State 2. Toledo 3. AppState 4. Marshall 5. Ohio 6. UConn (try again) 7. Ga State 8. Coastal Carolina I also like: La Tech NMSt FIU And I like all those with or without the AAC schools: Tulane Memphis ECU UT-SA USF UNT Rice Tulsa FAU
I hope the PAC doesn't underestimate the importance of getting a group of southern schools in the eastern time zone. Expanding the footprint of the PAC into these prime markets (Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana) is the KEY. Memphis, Tulane, and Texas State. MAKE IT HAPPEN
My two cents is the PAC is being too conservative. They need to be bold and make an add even if it isn't an ideal one. I think that you add NMSU and Texas State as "Jr. Partners" --- a half share each for the first 5 year TV contract, then something between a half share and a full share on the next TV deal depending on the conference viewerships in the DMAa where their fans live (Tucson, El Paso, Albuquerque DMAs for NMSU and Austin and San Antonio DMAs for Texas State.) Once you have history of seeing the value of their viewership, pay them appropriately on the second contract. They fully vest to full members after 10 years. NMSU with all the problems associated with their program over the last 5 years is still an annual tourney team most years. They actually look pretty good in this conference partnered with Texas State. It strengthens your State school in every state brand. They make it look stronger and membership definitely enhances them. Adding NMSU gives Texas State a reason to say yes. It gives Texas State a way to go to their fans and say we are not going to be on an island in this conference. The reason the PAC has never been able to land a Texas School is because fans of Texas schools do not want to be the lone Texas school in a conference where every game starts at damn near 10 PM. If you make the pursuit of a second mountain/central division a stated goal, Texas State is in. I think in general expansion Pac footprint people like B.J. Rains are being unrealistic again. I don't know why everyone out west thinks the PAC has THAT good of a hand. Traveling west is something everyone in Texas seems to hate. To get paid, the PAC needs Texas in some form and Memphis to get paid more than AAC members. Memphis is hard passing currently and Air Force sliding into the AAC will fund it. See reality. You need Texas in some significant form to make Memphis interested. Texas State (with access to the Austin and San Antonio recruiting grounds) actually works and NMSU as a strong basketball contender and a beatable football opponent is actually a positive to Memphis, just like USU was. You are a lot closer with them.... maybe even there. . If Memphis joins Tulane comes with and you can chose to shut down expansion and go conservative if you want.. If they pass you can build with California schools and MWC targets (UNLV, UNM) and a few others in a few years and try again.
Memphis, Tulane and Texas State would be a solid 10. If the Pac can't get AAC teams, bring in Louisiana and Texas State to get to 9. Maybe add Arkansas State for 10.
The guest speaker doesn’t like Tulane or UT-SA ??? Tulane has the best media viewership numbers in the AAC - they blow away Memphis. So do: Toledo, AppSt, Marshall, Ohio & UConn. UT-SA is on a rocket ship rise and is the top football attraction in San Antonio, Texas, which is also 1.25 hours from Austin. Two great markets in Texas. Bad takes. And the host “agrees?” If you want to get paid, you get Tulane, Toledo, ECU, AppSt, Marshall, UConn, Memphis, Tulsa. (That was their respective media viewership numbers rank order 2 years ago, btw.)
@RobertWilcox-y5l those programs are geographically strong selections on the rise. No reason to grab a program like Memphis, that is so far out of the way.
I hope those teams are not dumb enough to make this move. Why move. And have a never have a chance to play for a national title ever again. Don’t do it . Stay away from the Sec Big 10. Dominated. And phony playoff committee .
Add texas state get a concrete number on the tv deal. If its greater than the aac reapproach memphis, tulane, utsa, usf about adding an eastern wing starting with them. Uconn, toledo, northern illinois, liberty, georgia state, app state among others could be considered
Wait til the spring. AAC exit fees drop from 25 million to 17.5 million. Teresa Gould will have to put up 8.5 fedex can help Memphis. But if that TV deal isnt at 13 minimum then it might not work anyway.
Not quite right. Memphis & Tulane would “likely” have exit fees of about $25M to leave at this point for 2026-27 school year - has to be negotiated. However, they can leave for 2027-28 school year for a set $10M in done before April 2025 (to meet the 27-month notice). I do not know if UTSA has the same exit fee deal since they are new and dont get full TV payout.
Too bad they weren't about to poach the American. Could have pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot for the conference champ. Even though byes will probably no longer be a thing
If the PAC is successful in reducing the poaching fees, UNLV could still go to the PAC. The PAC2 got $5 million from each of the departing 10 schools while they are paying $10 million, plus $500,000 for each school after the first for the MWC teams. That means the MWC conference believes Boise, Fresno, SDSU etc are worth twice as much as USC, UCLA, Oregon etc. If the poaching fees get reduced UNLV may reconsider.
With Boise State (12-1)? Washington State (8-4 with wins over Texas Tech and Washington)? Colorado State (8-4)? Fresno State with a lot of historical P5 wins? Oregon State (former P5 team with 30 wins the past 4 years?)
@@atgdcommish608Yes but also has some losses to Mountain west teams and Colorado St escaped a close UTEP loss, so yes I Agree they'll be a top G5 league
They should add Texas State asap to get to 8 teams. Memphis feels like a pipe dream, they're gonna need a lot of money to offset the travel.
Texas State would be a great fit!
I like it. Great location and they almost beat the Big 12 champ. Easy airport access too.
From a WSU fan, Go Boise St!
Thanks yes go BSU
Unlv and Memphis desperately need the pac as the pac needs them to be more relevant on both sides!
Now that unlv has lost their coach I wonder if they stay relevant

UNLV was so deep in debt, so when the MW offered them $$$$$$$$$, they took it for the short term gain.
I also still think the Nevada politicians did not want Vegas and Reno separated despite so many denial headlines.
The Pac 12 needs Memphis but it will cost a lot of money to get them 20 million exit fee plus they need 12-15 million a year to make it work. Tulane could be their partner. Ranked for a week or two this year, competing in the AAC championship.

Tulane, Texas St, Memphis St, South Florida are the top four although others I could see are North Texas and UCONN for football only.
Those schools aren't going to pay the exit fees, plus putting aside 20 million to pay athletes, the American already said they would pay Tulane and the rest for staying, so Tulane and Memphis are probably going to make 11-12 million a year.
8:41 for the discussion that's the title of the video
Get Memphis, Texas State, Tulane, and St. Mary's. That's a strong basketball conference with a solid football foundation.
If Memphis even considered going to the Pac 12 for Football only, they'll look into the Big East for basketball.
@charleswebsterjr.6350 Why do that when they can get good competition in the PAC-12 without facing too many strong teams and ending up middle of the pack?

Texas State doesn't have those issues, that's why adding them now and circling back on the others in 1-2 years makes the most sense
