PASTA SALAD
1 box farfalle pasta Great Value brand from Walmart $1.18
1 can 3 bean salad $1.56
Total = $2.74
To make, I cooked my pasta until al dente in salted water and then let cool. I drained the 3 bean salad and reserved the liquid. Mix together and then add in a little olive oil ( or whatever oil you have) and the bean liquid for seasoning. I added a little Cavenders greek seasoning also but you could sprinkle with additional garlic salt or your own favorite seasoning.
*Optional add ins are green bell pepper, carrot, green onion. Really any vegetable you like would be good in this.
CHEESY PASTA ONE DISH MEAL
1 Penne pasta Great Value brand from Walmart $1.18
1 pack of Velveeta Cheese from 3 pack box $1.13 (box is $3.38)
1 frozen pack of broccoli $1.18
1 large can of chicken $2.79 10 ounce from Target (this is what I had on hand)
TOTAL $6.26. - SEE BELOW FOR $3 option
I actually think that the boxed macaroni is just as good as the Velveeta and much cheaper, see below. Make sure to get the Thick and Creamy style of macaroni though.
2 boxes macaroni and cheese Great Value Thick and Creamy style 1.06
1 frozen broccoli Great Value 1.18
1 small can chicken Great Value 1.42 - ( use larger can if you have more money)
TOTAL 3.66
ONIGIRI - JAPANESE TRIANGLE RICE BALLS
white rice 1 lb bag = .88 If you have a short grain rice, then use that.
1 pack of seaweed snack sheets = .92
tuna .88
TOTAL = $2.68
Must have some mayo though
Drain tuna, add in 1-2 tbs of mayo or until your desired consistency. Cook rice. Lay down a long sheet of plastic wrap. Lay down a sheet of the seaweed, add some rice on top, pat down and then add a tablespoon of tuna to center, add more rice to top. Now lay plastic wrap over and wrap it up and form into a triangle shaped ball. You can play with this, but this is the general idea.
I also tried frying one side to crisp up the rice for an added texture.
I dipped this in soy sauce to eat or if you have a chili garlic sauce.

Michelle, I make almost that exact pasta salad a lot! I add drained garbanzo beans, chopped red onion or scallions, chopped fresh parsley and some grated Parmesan topping. Sometimes we add canned white tuna or chicken to make a meal. Also, I use a splash of the pasta water to help everything to blend and adhere to the pasta better, and fresh grated pepper or some red chili flakes for a little kick. We love it in the summer!
Hello 😁 I think I'm going to make it your way next time, minus the tuna and chicken of course 😂 I usually don't like the sharpness of red onions but I think with that vinegar dressing it might blend in nicely with the salad. I'll marinate them first in that dressing. Love the idea of adding garbanzo beans to up the protein
@@ArdentMichelle I hope you enjoy it 😊
I just rewatched one of your videos from 5 months ago - Poor Man’s Meals - where you make several at home pizzas with tortillas…. Ohmygosh it reminded me of so many good ideas that I need to try!!!! 😋😋😋
Sometimes I see my old videos and think the same thing. I remember something that was really tasty and then I want to make it again, but I'm always trying something new for my channel so I don't have a lot of time for repeats 😂
Your videos are always so relaxing after a stressful week 😊
Hi Kendra 😁 I'm so glad you find my videos relaxing. That makes me happy. I hope you have a stress free week.
The visual aspect of this pasta salad doesn't seem all that unappealing to me. I think there is nice color there. 🤷♀
Ok good 😁 I guess I'm just use to eating bright colored dishes. 😂
I've been making bean salads lately. These are great for the warmer weather too. Onigiri! So that's what they are called. More great and unique ideas from you. Thanks for another good video, Michelle. 👍
Hi Jean 😁 Your welcome. You know I'm always trying something new out 😂 I need a lot of variety to keep myself happy! Aren't bean salads the best? I've been craving that dish again and it hasn't even been a week. I need to stock up on that bean salad.
Another thing to do with your Velveeta/chicken mixture is to pile it on a baguette that's been sliced lengthwise and run it under the broiler a couple minutes until it's melted and the bread is a bit toasted. Works with any pre-cooked meat. For a lower carb meal, pull out the baguette "innards", leaving a boat shape (also makes room for more topping). Freeze the "innards" to make future crumb toppings for pasta, casseroles, etc. I also sometimes add salsa or chili sauce to the velveeta mixture.
Hi Roberta 😁 Oh my gosh, that sounds amazing! Definitely saving this to try! Thank you.👩🍳
I make “sushi” with seaweed rectangles, cream cheese and tuna moistened with mayo. This video spoke to me. I love your creativity. I will expand my repertoire.
You are so original and delicious. Thank you.
Hi Janice 😁 Thank you so much! Sounds like you have some original ideas yourself. Thanks for sharing this! I'm keeping this tip.👩🍳
We love your femininity and gracious narration.
Oh and you could save the leftover salad brine to make into a homemade dressing!
Yes, that's a great idea 👍
Yum I look forward to seeing you each Sunday
Hi Lucinda 😁 I always look forward to talking with you all today too. 💜
The big size triangle mold might be fun to make mini sized meatloafs.
Yes! 👍 I was also thinking about using them to make Italian arancini rice balls
Welcome back, AM. We missed you last Tuesday. Are you going back to just one video per week? We've become spoiled!!
Hi Linda 😁 I'm trying to incorporate more of the weekly budget challenges since they are more popular, but they take longer.
@@ArdentMichelle Thank for your quick reply, AM. I completely understand.
pasta salad, for visual, I would add one small jar of pimentos (basically red peppers, but not fresh), and some fresh chopped parsley or cilantro--that would up the color quite a bit and not affect the basic taste a lot...dts/usa
Great ideas 👍
Yum - O! You posted this video just in time, I’m preparing another TEMU order and you can bet that I ordered the onigiri molds! Looks like a fun little project to play around with. I had just made 4 bean salad a couple of days ago, I use green, yellow wax (great name, huh?!?), kidney and chick peas with a light vinaigrette for mine. NEVER would’ve thought to make into a pasta salad, but what a great idea! Your creativity never stops amazing me.❤️
Hi Susan 😁 Thank you for the financial support 💜 I appreciate you! Glad you are planning to order the onigiri molds. I'll probably be using those a lot for uses they were not intended for 😂 Your recipe sounds delicious too. I was thinking that chickpeas would be good in it to help up the protein. So, I never see wax beans anywhere fresh 🤔 wondering if that's a regional thing in the U.S.
@@ArdentMichelle I have seen them fresh occasionally, but not as often as green beans for sure. I think they’re just less popular. I’ve mixed a can of green and a can of yellow just to make them more visually interesting when I needed a quick side and didn’t have much in the way of fresh veg. Jon doesn’t like chick peas (unless I make them into hummus) and will only eat kidney beans in chili, so when I make bean salad sometimes it’s all mine. Our boys will eat green or yellow beans no matter what I do to them. Michael loves green bean casserole, Zander will eat nearly anything!
@@susans9491 Zander sounds like my youngest son Christian. He will eat just about anything I make and he loves vegetables. It's so satisfying to cook for him 😂
Hi ❤️ pasta salad rocks! So underrated!
Rice snacks literally the cutest meal ive ever seen! Never thought a meal cd be cute lol! ❤️
Hi Penny 😁 Yes it does 👍 I plan on eating a lot of it this summer 😂 Glad you approve!
Love all your recipes❤
Thanks so much 😊
GIRRLLL!!! Cavenders Greek Seasoning is so delicious on everything! ❤ its so tasty!
It really is! 👍
you have become my favorite channel.
I'm so glad to hear that 💜
Thank you for sharing - great ideas!
You're welcome 😁Thanks for watching!
It all looks delightful and delicious! Thank you for the video
Hi Daniel 😁 You are so welcome! Glad you like this.
Thanks for these creative ideas. 🙂
Hi Pat 😁 It's my pleasure. I'm glad you like this one.
I LOVE how careful you are with your ingredients and your food....great job! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
Thank you so much 🥰
Thanks for another great video. The pasta salad is a great idea for a quick summer side .
You're welcome. 😁 Glad you like this video.
Thank you, Michelle!! Those rice balls look so very cool. You rock!
Hi Esther 😁 Thank you so so much!!! I'm grateful for you and your continued support. I'm so glad you like this video! Happy Friday 🥳🎉
I thought the pasta salad was pretty. Maybe some dried parsley or chives? I have both from the dollar tree. It’s always a fun adventure watching your videos
Hi Rachel 😁 I'm not sure why I forgot about the dried parsley this time. 😂 I agree, those would have been nice.
I grew up eating is pot 3 bean salad is what it's called homemade is better than the can stuff cuz you put bell peppers onions kidney beans white beans and green beans vinaigrette oil and sugar
yeah I bet homemade IS much better. 👍 I never see the wax beans here on the west coast though. Not sure if those are only sold in regional areas of the U.S.
Enjoyed seeing what you received from Temu. Those silicon bowl covers seem like a great idea.
Glad you enjoyed this. 😁 I think I'm going to get a lot of use out of those bowl covers.
You’re so creative! We have wax beans growing in the garden, I’d never considered adding them to a pasta salad. I’ll definitely need to give this a try.
Hi Trina 😁 Glad you like this. I had never tried anything like this before either, but I'm now sold. 😂 Already craving that 3 bean pasta salad again.
The velveta sauce packs are sold individually at dollar tree sometimes!
That's awesome 😁 I wish I would have known that. I could have mentioned that in this video. That's very helpful.
Temu is a Chinese company and i read where you shouldn't store your card information on there. I would either pay through PayPal or a prepaid card.
Agreed. I haven’t heard good things about Temu either 👎🏻
I believe they accept PayPal.
Finally I was looking for this comment. It's also cheap due to avoiding the us economy. It supports the Chinese economy
If youre too broke to buy three packets of Velveeda sauce, they frequently sell the single packs at Dollar Tree.
Great tip 👍 Thanks for sharing this!
The Velveeta cheese bags are sold as singles for 1.25 at Dollar Tree!
Hi Bethany 😁 Thanks so much for the info. I wish I would have known that, it would have been nice to mention in the video.
Thanks!
awe...Thank you so much for the support 💜
I’ve grown golden wax beans and loved them; the name is not unappealing to me! This looks delicious
Oh I would love to be able to have a garden. 🪴🎋 So much fun!
you can grill the onigiri and brush it with soy sauce or something like that. Have you ever tried adding Japanese rice flavorings. I'm not sure what they are officially called but you sprinkle it into/onto rice to add flavor, they have tama or egg flavor, they usually have a pickled plum flavor and chicken and of course seafood.
Hi Candace 😁 No, I haven't tried any of those, other than one I picked up at Trader Joes - but it was a bottle kind and I didn't really care for it. I don't eat any fish or seafood so I have to be careful with that kind of thing 😂 but I would love to try the pickled plum flavored. I wonder if I could find those at H Mart 🤔 Thanks for sharing this info.
🌿🌷🌿 Hi, Michelle. :) I got a kick out Justin eating all of your pasta salad and your family descending on your one pot meal! I like green beans, but their boring at the same time. I haven’t found a recipe yet that flavors them up. I love Velvetta. I don’t know if all Dollar Trees have it, but mine has single packs of it instead of the box. That would help cut the cost. You’re right about the seaweed not all tasting the same. Thanks for another video that doesn’t sacrifice a good meal in spite of the cost of food. 🌿🌷🌿
Hi Debbie 😁 Ok I have a challenge for you since you are finding green beans boring (I agree they definitely can be ) 😂 Are you in the U.S.? If so, if you have a PF Changs near you, you should order their crispy tempura battered green beans. They're served with their signature spicy sauce. It's really good! They also have chili garlic green beans that I think I love equally, and I sometimes recreate those at home. If you can't afford it, maybe some copycat recipes are online. I think a lot of the deliciousness of these dishes are in the sauces. Glad you are enjoying my videos 🥰 Have a great week!
Michelle, yes, I’m in the U.S., Connecticut. I looked up PF Changs and we have one in the whole state! But, it’s local enough to try their green beans. I think I’d like both recipes. Especially the battered ones. So, you’re on! I’m going to try both. Thanks for telling me about them and I’ll still keep looking for some good recipes, too. :)
@@debbies.3109 Yay! Glad they have one close enough that you can check them out. Let me know what you think 😁
Great video thanks ❤😊
You are so welcome 😁
Those molds are so cool! They'd be such a good shortcut to making sushi!
Hi Victoria 😁 yeah that would be fun to try 👍
I am definitely going to try the rice balls! The pasta/broccoli dish can easily be "veganized" with some kind of bean and nutritional yeast or even vegan "cheese." Thanks for the ideas!
Of course 😁 Thanks for watching!
Great video… I kept thinking that feta cheese would make that bean salad amazing!
Hi Wendie 😁 I'm with you on that, feta would have been delicious!
The first time I tried sesame oil (years ago), I loved it so much...went to use it..went nuts with it and TOO MUCH!!! :) So funny..I always tell people to just a little bit and you can add more......I learned my lesson! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
I think I could drink the stuff 😂 just kidding! I agree..
I LOVE 3 Bean Salad! 🫘 But I also have in my memory banks from probably decades ago eating a “bad” wax bean…. But it doesn’t stop me from eating 3 bean salad…. 😁😍🥰 I’ll have to try that pasta dish 🤩👍🏻
Hi Cathie 😁 That's funny that we have the same kind of memory. 😂 This was a new discovery for me, and I'm already wanting to make it again.
I really like the onigiri molds and i want to try it.
Hi Anna 😁 Yes, they are so much fun!
Those cute triangles are cute!
I thought so too! 😁
A canned bean salad is my quick pantry go-to for a side during the Summer. I use a can 2-3 times each Summer when we’re in a hurry. Goes great with anything grilled!
This was my first time with a bean salad, and I'm definitely a fan now. 👩🍳
Ohh need to try Onigiri. I love the wasabi nori and buy it as a snack all of the time.
Hi Christine 😁 I should probably try the wasabi nori just to make sure I don't like it. Wasabi on it's own is a little too intense for me, but sometimes the flavored products are different.
I got those bowl covers too. Some of my pyrex storage container plastic covers wore out and started chipping, so I am using these covers you showed. Works really well. I had never seen those rice shapers, I will consider getting them, I do love sushi. Years ago, three bean salad was the thing, I remember my mother-in-law making it for some occasions, and wax beans were a part of it. I like it a lot. I think this salad can also use little sliced onions, little chopped pimentos or green peppers, maybe a little feta cheese and bits of olive. I am wondering though if one serving would be enough to fill a person for one meal.
I've been needing those bowl covers for awhile now. 😂 Well, the box of pasta says it has 8 servings in it, so if you wanted to have more there would be enough. Sometimes for dinner I just have pasta with a veg on the side, so I figured it might be enough if that was all someone had to spend on dinner, but it could always be bulked up with bread or a protein.
I like your ideas for additions to the pasta salad 👍
The pasta salad, I would add some dried parsley to give it some color and maybe even a slight covering of paprika....maybe even a few shreds of cheese....really nice recipe---I've done this many many times at my former restaurants as a side....good job AM! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :) Sooo funny about the wax beans...
Hi Dawn 😁 Thanks for the input on the salad. I'm not sure why I forgot about the dried parsley 😂 and I love the idea of paprika!
@@ArdentMichelle You know what they say dear, "Recipes are Suggestions"! :) Have a great day out there! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
@@richardschmidt2430 😂 Haha so true 👍You too friend!
Loved this video so much Michelle! ❤ what did you put into your sushi rice that you used for the Onigiri??? I want to order those molds from temu haha
Hi Hayley 😁 I took a shortcut and used Trader Joes organic frozen brown rice (in the package) because I had it in the freezer. I'm not sure if it's a medium grain or short grain rice. I didn't add vinegar or sugar to the rice like some people do with sushi, and I don't think that's typically done with onigiri, but I'm not positive. I think it's mostly about the toppings (not that that matters 😂). I basically just used the rice and I think I added some sesame oil to one. I planned on dipping them in soy sauce and or the chili garlic and therefore opted for less seasoning on the inside. I've seen some onigiri where they dipped the sides of the triangles in furikake seasoning. I preferred the smaller bite size ones with kimchi. Hope this helps.
As always you have done ✅ a great job with the recipe presentation. I love 3 bean salad and have made it with garden fresh ingredients and added more canned kidney beans. I liked the idea of tiny tomatoes added. The little rice sushi triangles look fun to make and delicious. I was thinking tuna with the broccoli pasta and cheese. I would splurge and buy a box of Anne’s Mac n cheese with the squeeze pouch. Thank you ❤
Hi Victoria 😁 Thanks so much. Glad you like this one. I've never had Annies Mac and Cheese, but I've heard it's good. I didn't realize they had a squeeze pouch. I should try that next time I'm at the store. Thanks for sharing this.
Annie’s with the squeeze pouch is a bit salty to me. So definitely don’t salt the pasta water. Which I never do.
@@VictoriaFerland-gu7rb understood 👍 Thanks for the tip.
Any time. It’s always good to learn from one another.
I thought it looked pretty as it was - it’s a pasta salad - they’re usually all the same looking and all delicious
Glad you liked it 😁
I’m totally gonna try your pasta salad and I’m 100% certain you don’t have to add any oil to it. I don’t add any oil to any of my food and it still comes out good.
I hope you like it. 😁 There was something about the sweet and sour in there that I loved. I actually can't wait to make that again! I agree- oil is just a preference but not necessary.
I usually put some frozen corn or peas in my pasta salads if I have them. The corn adds a bit more sweet and a bit more color. They are definitely better after chilling overnight. The onigiri looks like a fun dinner to have when my adult kids come over. Dinner with "some assembly required" is always fun! I really look forward to your videos. I tell the hubby I'm "going in the hole" and put my headphones on to enjoy it. He knows not to bother me until the headphones come off!
Yes, I think I would like corn in it 👍 I don't like peas, but otherwise that's a great idea too 😂 Yeah I was thinking the same thing with the onigiri. I like to have food events like that. They are so much fun!
@@ArdentMichelle sometimes it’s more fun when people screw it up, ie sushi 🤣
@@allyrooh3628 haha so true 👍
Another great video.
I am wondering if some freshly made, crunchy, croutons would add a nice texture to the 3 bean and pasta salad?
Thank you so much 😁 oh, I bet croutons would be very nice on that. 👍 great idea!
Hi Michelle, I too order from Temu, I am going to make an order today, I have got to get those rice molds. The tuna ones looked especially good. I haven't made pasta salad in a while so I need to do that, I won't be making the one you did because I have my favorites that I do but the 3 bean mixed in might be really good, I would make some additions but at least you planted the idea in my little noggin.
Hi Charlotte 😁 Let me know if you have a good pasta recipe to share. 👩🍳 I have 3 other fun salads that I plan to make on my channel soon.
@@ArdentMichelle I do have great pasta salad recipes, but, they really aren't what I call budget, depending on which one they call for some pricier ingredients.
@@charlottekearn5185 Understood 👍 Yeah some of the recipes I want to try, I'm going to have to squeeze into a weekly budget.
Onigiri looked good. I'm sure your son will enjoy the tuna one.
Thank you. 😁I had fun with the onigiri. I'll be using those molds a lot.
@@ArdentMichelle what's your son's channel?
Warning: Read 3 Bean Salad is very sweet. 1/3 cup has 60 calories and 10gm of sugar. I do not like my vegetables to be that sweet. If you are like me, make your own with canned beans, bell pepper, and onion, and dress it with Newman's Own Lite Italian salad dressing, or just oil, vinegar, and Italian seasoning. I've added all sorts of sweeteners including Stevia. If you use regular canned beans, do drain and rinse gently.
True 👍. It's the sweet and sour of it that I find so appealing. It's extremely rich though, which is why I only used a portion of the liquid. Great idea to make this with stevia for a healthier option. 👩🍳
The pasta and bean dish may just need a little parsley or basil?
oh good point 👍 I forgot to dress it with dried parsley. Fresh basil would be delicious!
Anyone else have issues eating way too much cold pasta salads???
If this question is about overeating on pasta salads then I will have to confess to this.😂
@@ArdentMichelle OMG-it's like consuming popcorn-just can't stop!
@@jadedgramma I do that too 😂 Popcorn with parmesan cheese on top is one of my favorite weekend snacks.
Wax beans are a aquired taste and that company specializes in German style and eastern european style foods i believe on the cheap..i know my grandma always bought their foods and she was as frugal as they come 😂and wax beans are just green beans that aren't completely ripe if I remember..and you should try the German potato salad from that company its not too bad ..if you like canned potatoe salad 😅haha you can find wax beans just about anywhere except antarctica lol.btw Dollar tree sells Velveeta sauce and ive been definitely binging for ideas and your helping me stretch our food budget .lol..and I'll be doing a DT thanksgiving for sure...and you can make your own chili garlic sauce if you have some garlic cloves like about 2 and a little cooking oil like an 8th of a cup i think and a little soy 3 tbsp & a little vinegar and some chili flakes or powder and mix in your favorite Asian hot sauce and run it through a blender you have some decent poor mans chili garlic sauce..i cant eat any asian foods ( health junk lol)but if I'm told how to make a sauce on the cheap ill pass it on so if you think you can use it more power to you and as usual good video and take care and God bless 😊
I've made plenty of Asian sauces, but my favorite contains red jalapeños and I haven't been able to find those in the stores. 😞
Glad you are enjoying my content. 😁
@@ArdentMichelle I understand and was just being thoughtful and oh yeah red jalapeno you probably can find them at a Thai grocery store or something..I only use green ones but that's what's at my bodegas lol .and better you than me if I even touch certain Asian ingredients I get a little woozy lol
@@ArdentMichelle also if I'm not mistaken jalapenos have the same botanical makeup as Chili's like I think hatch peppers are related to jalapeno so you probably could get a way with using a red hatch if you find one on sale 😏
This was a wonderful video for the most part. For all of you that love and enjoy nori know that I will do my part and make sure it’s always in the store when you want to buy it! That’s a very long-winded way to say I hate nori. The rice moulds look fun though, so I might try them just minus the icky dried seaweed.🤣🤣🤣🤣
Agree...not much visual appeal.
The little snack sizes are salty squares of deliciousness! 😋 Thanks for saving them for me 😂
