  • Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
I did it again! In case you missed the first video, here it is: • Thrifting in Scotland ... This event was held in Glasgow and hosted by a company called Worth the Weight. Entry was £2 for a timed slot, and they refresh the racks every few minutes. This time, I bought five items for £44 (including one big item which was capped at £20). I had a nice experience again, and I really appreciated that the content was so different, it really highlights how different every even is. I'll probably be going again!
Let me know you're favourite find down below and whether you liked the yellow dress!

Some thoughts- the cashmere sweater is terrific!! Totally Cassie and will go with many things. The blue coat belt- try knotting it like a sash at the waist with both ends hanging. Also Blue goes great with brown. You have so much brown in your wardrobe the blue might go better than you think. Consider leaving it the color that it is… it really is a nice color on you!!

@@CatsCostumery I think you should keep it blue, just replace the trim with a navy velvet ribbon, instead of black. Or black might even work too. I think the trim would look better if it was darker than the coat, rather than lighter.

Open up the seams in the front of the yellow dress, center it and then sew it up completely closed. Add a little lace over the seam or some little frills.

I think the coat and the velvet jacket are the gems of this shopping trip! The cashmere sweater is definitely the most chic of the group. The dress just has an Asymmetrical placket closure. I believe it is meant to be that way, but that is probably why it didn't sell in the store. I thought it looked good on you. Adding the closure to the jacket will make it more versatile over the long run. I can't believe you don't check the tags before you buy things!! That is amazing to me. I congratulate you on the one thing in and one thing out process you have. I wish I did the same. Thanks for sharing the shopping trip with us!

I think you showed admirable restraint in only buying 5 pieces! Five very good items, too.
The dress is lovely in shape and color. I would change the front and neckline--let it out slightly and make the neck hole bigger. That looked like it would choke! A summer dress should be less uptight as far as I'm concerned. And I'm with you; the off center business is weird.

Those are really amazing finds. I think there are a few vintage kilo shops in Vienna, that I passed a few times. Never been in one though...
Maybe I should, there is always a lot of 80s in the window, but I like some of 80s fashion anyway :)
For terminology 'vintage' is actually 20 years old or more - so 90s and 2000s would fit in that too. In narrower terms, some people consider only old designer/expensive clothes 'vintage'...

Honestly, the cashmere top alone was worth the money you paid! I remember the excitement when I found a cashmere sweater (in my size!) at an op shop for only $10. Just amazing. And cashmere is so wonderful- it's so soft, and it doesn't make you sweaty (I normally can't afford anything except acrylic, so it's always Sweatsville, until I found that sweater). Still wear it to this day, though I did have to darn a hole my daughter put in it (and boy did I go off at her!) I looked up the brand online, and they were still selling that exact sweater, for $260. So $10 was a huge bargain. And 44 pounds (no pound sign on my keyboard) for that top is probably a lot less than the top cost brand new all on its own. So I' say you also got a bargain.

Most of these items are a complete win, especially for the price. The yellow dress needs something. Maybe you could take a contrasting colored trim and use that to both extend and highlight the side closure? That way it would look totally on purpose and give it the tiny bit of extra space to close comfortably. Anyway, good luck with your 1 in 1 out choices and thanks for sharing, as this was a lot of fun!

  • @tygerstripes3752
    @tygerstripes3752 2 роки тому +5

Yes, that first dress has an asymmetrical neckline. Very 80s! It might fit you better on top if you had a more structured bra on under it. Don't get me wrong, I wear a sports bra everyday, but if I'm going somewhere fancy, I have a couple of proper bras and they make a difference in fit all the way around.
That's a cashmere sweater (I think in the UK you call that a 'jumper'?) with a mock turtleneck. And Japanese design to boot? Score!
No, a swing coat isn't fitted to the waist. A swing coat is more of a late 50s/early 60s look and hangs loosely from the shoulders, sorta like a cape with sleeves. I'd call what you have a coatdress. I think the belt could use a bigger buckle, maybe to match your new buttons? I also think the belt needs to be an inch or so lower, because right now it rides over the lower buttons, and they are a great style point that shouldn't be covered up.
I'm hesitant to say, 'go ahead and dye it', because it could be wool, and wool does not take well to hot water. Dark blue is a fine color, and would look great with that black velvet contrast.

Would it go with your graduation dress? heart eyes, heart eyes. And yes on your waistcoat! I'd be wearing that every day! I love your long coat and yes, change to actual belt style. You can probably just change the hardware and cut off that long tail. And that cashmere!!!

On the coat, try dying the belt only.
For the dress, I think that making the top into more of a pinafore or bib to would be cute. Or a peasant top style. To me, the "mandarin (?) " collar doesn't match the skirt style.

The velvet jacket is to die for. Ditto the skirt (i must have it) and ANY cashmere sweater, but especially a short sleeved mock turtle. The combo is perfect. I would say generally speaking, a swing coat does not have a defined waistline. But apparently they can have a nipped waist, so maybe yours falls into that category. I definitely agree you should hold off thinking about dyeing the coat until it is cleaned. I hear navy blue will soon be the new black anyway. Seriously, though, it can really act as a more upbeat neutral. Definitely change the trim, though, and eeeew, those buttons. As for the yellow dress, I would have to see it pressed to really know if I think it works. I do like the idea of the off-center closure, but maybe not in something that light-weight.
Anyway, thank you for sharing your haul. This is the first time I've been offered your channel and quite enjoyed it. Here in the PNW of the USA, we have an annual fabric, notions, yarn, etc sale where most yardage goes for $2 / pound.(maybe about £10 / kilo Not really price-comparable to clothing, of course. But it is really an amazing deal.

I’m voluble this morning. Daring experiment for the long coat: take a black permanent marker and, at the back neck or at the front under lap, try painting the ribbon trim. Much less faff than removing it and less bulk than covering it. That might contrast enough to help you like the coat in blue, which would also save the faff of overdying it. I mean, what great vessel are you going to need for that struggle?

The coat will look better once dry cleaned, don’t use the belt buckle, just tie it, that’s why the belt is so long for the waist size. The velvet jacket looks great overall, but the sleeves and shoulders don't look quite right. It's like the shoulder seam is too long. I don't know how much of a pain it would be to shorten the shoulder seam and bring up the sleeves about a quarter of an inch or half an inch. Just the shoulder seam. The sleeves look great. As for the coat, it looks fabulous on you. But I'm not sure dying it will work. The color, at least on camera, looks good on you. And it's dark, at least on camera, so it should clash too much with other things in your wardrobe. But that's just me.

You did well, Cat! The short-sleeve sweater is worth the 20 pounds by itself; the coat fits you really well, and I would leave it blue. The skirt is great but might need a bit taken in at the waist. Now about the dress; I have to say something to help you, not to be mean or harsh. I can see that you have a pretty healthy bust size, I do as well, the ladies enter the room long before the rest of me. I am 61 and have dealt with this blessing/ curse for a very long time. First I want you to put on the little short sleeve sweater then stand in front of the mirror. The sweater is NOT too big...it's perfect. The bust needs room,
a little to drape and flatter. Now I want you to put the dress on and look in the mirror. Yes, the opening is quite wonky; it is also way too small. The bust should not ever be that tight, also the elastic waist is very visible. The top of the dress should be fitted not skin tight. The top/bodice should blouse over a bit. Fit your upper body first, and you will find that dresses will fit much better. You can take in where
something is too big, but if something is too small it is too small. Wearing a garment that is already
too small makes us look even larger. If the ladies look like they want to burst out it is because they are.
I hope this helps you the next time you go shopping, and I hope you take this advice the way it was meant, from one busty lady to another with the best of intentions

The cashmere top would be a short sleeve mock turtleneck, looks very nice on you. Cashmere is an awesome find when you can get it in your size and a flattering style. I think you did better this time than last time. The velvet jacket definitely works with your history bounding outfit, well done. It's a good rule to check labels, I do that when charity thrift shopping. The blue coat is nice as is, it's a dark navy so it can read black in certain lighting. The trim and button update makes sense on the coat. It's a large item to overdye, think on it for a while.

I think the yellow dress was designed to be centered at waist, but left open above that for a lapel? Nice finds!

Love love love that velvet jacket. It is just darling on you. I think black is "your" color. It was my favorite item in your haul, and the fit of it was perfect. A closure would make it even better and something you can easily do. Second fav was the skirt. Seems like an item you will wear quite a bit, and I love the length, as well as the waist treatment and that it has pockets.

I think the yellow dress is a 1960's dress I don't know I might be wrong. and it is meant to be on the side and not in the middle. I have a few dresses like that. and having a bra from that time period helps very much. And I love the short jacket i would match that up with a date dress from the 50's so cute.

Fabulous coat. I'd probably make the yellow dress into a skirt as that top is a little wonky. Love that the brown skirt has pockets. Thanks for sharing your haul!

Yeah that's one issue with lighting and vintage clothing. It might look one color a certain light and a different color. In another light, a lot of the issue too is blacks tend to fade sometimes to a reddish color, sometimes through greenish color, sometimes to a bluish color. It just depends on the fabric, what kind of dye they used etc

Cut the yellow dress down to a skirt and save yourself the effort of trying to fix the top. Its obvious you're not happy with the fit or style (odd!).
Everything else is fantastic on you as it is.

I am so jealous. In my area you really have to dig to find nice vintage clothing. Anything made with real wool Is extremely rare. I love the coat.

I love all your buys. No such sales here in Canada ☹. The blue coat is lovely. Dyeing it might be quite a task as it is alot of fabric

I think your realization about where to place the waist of the yellow dress was great! The off center closure looks so cute on you, and settles nicely into place when aligned off center.

Loved the coat keep it blue but make the trim darker. the cashmere top and the skirt go well, but the yellow dress I am not so sure unless you can add a bit of trim etc that silhouette makes you look heavy.

11:02 : you van also close it with a (silver?) broche, in the same spot, as where you would put the hook and eye.

A lot of the dresses in the '40s were not center buttoning they kind of went off to the side. It was a popular style back then

The blue coat looks really good but I think k if you try to dye it the wool will shrink so you would need to get it professionally dyed which would be expensive

You want to love the yellowy dress so much - but you just can't 😔 . Idk if that could ever make you happy so I'd rather let go of it or turn it into a skirt. The top doesn't work at all somehow.
I like the coat the way it is but if you really want to change that much you might as well sew one of your own instead of putting so much work into the existing one.
The top, taupe skirt and little velvet jacket are absolutely lovely! And yes, a hook to close the latter would be great.
Do you really have to throw something old out for something new?! That sounds painful, but I very much appreciate you being so consequent 👍🏼!

The belt is designed to be tied rather than using it through the buckle. That is why it is so long.

I think the yellow dress is a little left centered, yes !The short velvet jacket is fabulous!!! I personally really liked the contrast of the ribbon with the fabric of that dark blue coat. The buttons looks like 80's to me! A button shop in Brazil have loads of them.
