Mate - the mini cruise! Bang on. We went 3 years ago mate. Great crew, and a ship big enough to explore. Channel, blue, then she swings SW into Atlantic, deep black. Great fun. Don't forget to examine Bilbao, you can see bits of it in a couple of hours. And then, back to Blighty. T
I remember this crossing so vividly. To be honest, being on the ship was the best part of the holiday. The main deck was trashed when we came up for breakfast. We had a naval escort on the second night in case we went down. Their scanners are stronger than a domestic ship. We diverted 8 miles off our heading to avoid the deepest part of the Bay of Biscay.
remember that crossing i was on it was really bad the duty free shop was rolling all the bottles around the floor plates smashing in the canteens even the hose pipes where falling out of the housings and the swimming pool below became a wave pool
Let me just say ow much I loved this ship even though I only travelled on her twice. But on the way back once we endured a Force 9-10 gale and I found myself one evening, with the ship battling through the huge waves, I was at the stern and I was gently patting the hand rail and whispering "Come on 'Pride' get us through this". I was absent-mindedly talking to the ship without even noticing! From then on I loved it. One of my most memorable holidays!! I LOVE THIS SHIP!!
I did the Pride of Bilbao Mini Cruise from Portsmouth in December 2005. It was £40 per person with 2 for the price of one (I know why now).. The ship was 4 hrs late leaving and we were offered a refund as it was going to be rough. We were 6hrs late arriving and were off the boat for 2hrs before returning again. I would never do this trip in the winter but the ship is spectacular with many great facilities and lots to do.
I got off the Pride of Bilbao yesterday (15th July 2010) We had really bad storms on that voyage (Force 9 gale and 7m waves)! We had to slow down so much, we missed our docking slot in Portsmouth. We didn't get in until midnight (should have got in at 5:00pm) It was a great ship though!
I love this ferry I go on it every August to Spain then often have 2 weeks in spain then come ba ck on this ferry. I'm going on it on 28th July and coming back on it some when in August. It always does from ~Port
A. Nonny Mouse what made you think what I said was not mature at all? its FACT I was on that boat back then. Am I saying I witnessed the Pyramids in Egypt when they was being built? does it REALLY sound that impossible to imagine?
went on this ferry early this year just brill and the entertainment was fantastic some advise on the eating side is go to the langan`s brasserie for about £6 more you get treated like a king and it is worth it. I will definitely go on it again .
She's now been called the 'Princess Anastasia' and will sail for St Peter Line on their Stockholm to St Petersburg route. Shame, I would have hoped for something a bit closer to home. Anyway at least she's coming back (Spring 2011). PS- Great video love the music
Wow just viewed this and I'm in the film with my brother in Law Dave looking out the window. It was a hell of a storm and shortly after this Dave dissappeared to the cabin and was seasick lol I was ok though and as we were travelling comercial there was loads of food spare ha ha
it may not have been like this when he left port, weather can change in an instant. ferries have to try to stick to a timetable so there is minimal disruption, and if the captain feels it is safe to go he will, he might not have expected that when he left. but there is a phrase "your timetable is flexible but your ship isnt"
That is a definite ''Rough Sea'' crossing. As a child on ''Falaise'' {A tiny ferry} we had a belter of a Crossing from Dieppe to Newhaven. The Decks were closed, and I was told by Mum ''You are lucky! You don't get seasick''... But I definitely didn't feel ''Right''....Sort of headachey and giddy and feeling a bit 'yuck'. {That is definitely 'Seasickness in my book}. The crossing seemed interminable, but at least she was allowed to Dock..{Maybe as she was quite small} ..Never have I been so glad tosee the dear, familiar White Cliffs appear, disembark and feel solid land beneath my feet , and get home to a cup of tea and to see our Siamese cat! {Mum and I missed him terribly on ''Foreign'' holidays..{Those were the days of 6 month Quarantine stays..}
Definitely! 'Bay of Biscay' {I didn't realise it was also called 'Golfo de Vicaya' is notoriously rough and stormy. A lovely teacher we had 'Miss Kitson' used to live in Spain and told us of a huge storm she was in, We loved hearing about it :)
Sorry i write again it always does from Portsmouth - Bilbao Leave at 11pm (English Time) at night from Portsmouth then you'd have the next day on the ferry all day. then the next day arrive in Bilbao at 8am (Spanish time). From Bilbao - Portsmouth Leave Bilbao at 12pm or 1pm (Spanish time) then arrvie in Portsmouth next day at 5pm (English time).
I was on that ship during the storm. Me and my dad were getting lunch then we saw some of the plates and trays fell down because we struck a wave and I lost my footing and fell down and my dad didn't help me. He just stayed there and pissed himself laughing at me.
the pride of bilbao now sails between stockholm (sweden) and st petersburg (russia) throught the baltic sea. i was planning on visiting the baltic area next year and i was wondering what to do up there - the pride of bilbao (or princess anastasia) has provided a solution :)
@ajlisknillat She only spent 6 years working as Olympia and then 17 as the pride of bilbao in Portsmouth. Anyway it doesn't matter - I'm just sad to see her go!!
I went on this once and we had a force 10 gale, a lot of people were ill (including some staff) and one of things that closed was the cinema. I was one of a few who felt fine.
I love the pride of bilbao! I have been on it once and it got a bit choppy but it was not as bad as this. It is just such a shame that she has now gone. p.s. I love the video!!!!!
love this video, this ship and its sister, excellent builds =) so good that they still in use, would be a shame to sell them away to asia or such as that. this video shows what an excellent ship she is,carrying passengers safely in this weather =D never to worry, ship is built to be at sea, even in storm. just get over the ride and wait for next morning beeing at port =) she never let us down. Now she is princess anastacia, I think she looks good, never been onboard, outside is very nice =)
Cool That must have been quite scary =] Lol Alistair McFadyen must have had a hard time controlling that beast (or however you spell it My name is Alastair - spelt different)
nice video went 5 weeks ago on a booze cruise will definately do it again soon :0, anyone no the best time to gowhen it will be rough ? ? ? ? ?cos it was like a millpond when i went had wicked time pulled on the first night 2! touch
I was on this ship in this storm , the only time I have been seasick. Terrifying absolutely terrifying. I remember everyone being told to sit on the middle deck on the floor so we could attempt to turn into the English channel , the ship rolled so far over there was water on the windows . When we finally docked the front of my VW camper was all smashed in , several big trucks had turned over and a beautiful Bristol sports car had been smashed to pieces.
@ajlisknillat I guess you're right - actually I was more worried about her being scrapped or going to the Far East or something. But Scandinavia isn't very far away..
I was on the trip it’s crazy when I think about it I’ll never forget it even tho I was 4 at the time am now 17 and it still scares me just watching the video
@reduolf I see your point but im sure she will have a good time serving us here, always welcome for a cruise;-) And,we are very happy to have her back, the sisters togheter once again. it is to cute..really. if she was a human, she would prefer beeing here, where she has her origin from hahaha Just kidding. sad that shes leaving you but lucky for us!! :D
@rkan2 It has been retired - I was on P&O's very last return trip on 25th Sept 2010. She's now docked in Falmouth, has been repainted and is now simply called the "Bilbao".
I love the Pride of Bilbao, but as Greekantonis says the smoking room on the top deck is awful. We're going to get booked up again. Mind you though, Bilbao's a bit of a dump.
….’ In case we went down’…..come on, I know the vessel quivers and butts etc, the beast is somewhat tormented by the elements but it’s not going down is it!!
I wonder how they dared to take this ship in such conditions. MS Olympia had a vulnerable bow visor design. See the case of MS Estonia who sank in the Baltic Sea in 1994.

DANKE FÜR DIESES VIDEO!!!
And it would have been a long way down. The south half of the trip to bilbao is off the continental shelf, and it is 4 kilometers to the sea bed.
I was on this boat back around 1995 and was caught in the middle of a MAJOR storm. Scary as hell when you 13!
A. Nonny Mouse what made you think what I said was not mature at all? its FACT I was on that boat back then. Am I saying I witnessed the Pyramids in Egypt when they was being built? does it REALLY sound that impossible to imagine?
People have been waiting for that answer on this video for a long time, thanks a lot bro :)
nice video
lovely weather
nice music
I was also on her very last trip - quite a noisy exit to Bilbao and I saw some of the crew in tears. Shame this dear old ship is being retired.
I used to work there ages ago...great memories
went on this ferry early this year just brill and the entertainment was fantastic some advise on the eating side is go to the langan`s brasserie for about £6 more you get treated like a king and it is worth it. I will definitely go on it again .
i went to bibao on 23 march 2007 and the weather on the way back was rough

never seen the weather that bad.
i am also going on it the 27th

Just came off this ferry last night. Had a great time and the video will be online by tonight.

I was on this ship during the force 12 storm, it was terrible but the next morning it was fime!
I went on the Bilbao once..... Still alive thank god. Had a biblical storm, I actually thought death was coming. The bay of biscay is mental.
Such a shame this cruise isnt going anymore, went on it around 5 times, loved it everytime.
My old ship back in 1990 M/S Olympia.
She is very good ship... I have sailed with her sister Ship Mariella... and I have only good memorys:D
We were on this trip!!! Nightmare voyage!!

That is a definite ''Rough Sea'' crossing.

That was one epic storm. Is it normal for that ferry to put out to sea in that weather?
Muy buen video, da una clara imagen de lo que es el Golfo de Vicaya cuando la meteorología se pone adversa.
Definitely! 'Bay of Biscay' {I didn't realise it was also called 'Golfo de Vicaya' is notoriously rough and stormy. A lovely teacher we had 'Miss Kitson' used to live in Spain and told us of a huge storm she was in, We loved hearing about it :)

She's actually built for the Helsinki-Stockholm route.
@ajlisknillat She only spent 6 years working as Olympia and then 17 as the pride of bilbao in Portsmouth. Anyway it doesn't matter - I'm just sad to see her go!!

Wooo, wouldn't want to be in the force 11/12 bit for much longer!
I love the pride of bilbao! I have been on it once and it got a bit choppy but it was not as bad as this. It is just such a shame that she has now gone.

Not true. It is operating for St. Peterline in Scandanavia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPL_Princess_Anastasia_(1986)#/media/File:Princess_anastasia.jpg

I love the Pride of Bilbao, but as Greekantonis says the smoking room on the top deck is awful. We're going to get booked up again. Mind you though, Bilbao's a bit of a dump.

I wonder how they dared to take this ship in such conditions. MS Olympia had a vulnerable bow visor design. See the case of MS Estonia who sank in the Baltic Sea in 1994.
No, Olympa and Mariella had a strong visior systems... Viking Sally and Diana II had some weaknesses...
