In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
Quebecer here, the can of maple syrup is opened with a botle and can opener that you use to punch a triangular shaped hole hole on each side (the first one to pour, the second one to let air bubbles escape for a more controled pour). after opening, you put it into a liquid container that can be used for pouring liquids in the traditional sense (like reusing a plastic bottle of maple syrup funnily enough). also for the queen's portrait, it is almost never hanged anywhere due to our cultural and historical heritage comming from France rather than the UK.
From the UK I am old enough to remember that until some time in the 1980 and the invention of the “ring pull”, this was the only way to open cans containing liquid,e.g. coke, Pepsi etc. As a schoolboy I always had a can puncher on my pen knife tab in my pocket.
1) Maple Syrup can: First off wrong can opener, you punch it like a juice can not remove the lid. The picture on the can is a Sugar Shack and it is not a winter scene rather it is an early Spring scene which is when Maple sap flows the strongest. 2) The Portrait: We are under the Canadian Royalty not the UK Royalty, it just happens to be the same person who holds the title of King/Queen of Canada. Think about your favorite actor and how many different roles they have played and you can get the idea. 3) The poppy: Not a politcal statement, it is a symbol of remembreae. We wear them to remember those who fought and died for our country. 4) Loblaws: President Choice refers to the President of the Company, whoever they currently are 5 ) His accent was overly exagerated an forced.
@@r.j.powers381 I try. I don't double check everything but those stuck out at me. Regarding the socks they are socks. I'm not sure if they are based of off traditional Lumberjack socks or Hockey socks. Either would be speculation on my part.
JJ is wrong on so many levels. Please don’t take him at face value. No name brands are often cheaper, but not always and they are typically very similar if not exactly the same as branded products without the increased price due to brand recognition. This guy has a serious superiority complex.
Keep in mind that the 'no name' recipe would be basic with only the minimum flavour ingredients to call it that product. The lack of printing effort, brand advertising and "less then premium grade ingredients " are what make the price lower. In the USA, Walmart and Costco have their own cheaper "brand" which would be of a similar concept.
Perhaps that’s true of the cocoa, but some other products are definitely inferior, like cookies - Oreos for example, they’re definitely not as good. That said, if you were using NN Oreos for baking you might be able to get away with it but otherwise nope! Same could be said of canned tomatoes, they’re definitely not San Marzano tomatoes 🍅 packed in thick juice/pulp, but in this watery brine. Yuck. Really depends on the product. Yes, sometimes it’s made by the same factory, but certainly not always!
About the history of the poppy, it was actually started in France by Anna Guerin, not USA. It was originally a fundraising tool, but it was to rebuild the areas of France that had been damaged during WW1, not to support the veterans. Anna Guerin was inspired by the poem In Flanders Fields, which is based on the fields in Flanders France which had been barren before the Napoleonic wars, but then started sprouting poppies. It was later presented to the French allies, including the precursor of the Canadian legion, The Great War Veterans Association, and was adopted by them in 1921. The Canadian legion still uses it as a fundraising tool every year, and in Canada it is "expected" and sometimes mandatory to wear the poppy from Nov. 1st to 11th.
No Name products are actually pretty good, sometimes even better than name brand products. All types of ppl of all types of financial situations buy No Name products. That guy in the video really seems to like to talk down on certain groups of ppl.
Ya, his accent isn't one I'm familiar with, other than the make fun version. I've lived in and visited 7 provinces, and not encountered his accent before.
The poppy was NOT started by an American. I live in Thunder Bay, where it all started. It was started by a French woman from France. She started it to raise funds for the French veterans and then brought it to France’s allies in 1921. The tradition has been going for over 100 years now.
Poppies are a symbol of remembrance for those Canadians lost in WW1 and 11. The reason for the poppy is because they grew between the graves of soldiers buried in France. Therefore The poem In Flanders Fields. Not many people realize that on our Canada Day celebration the people of Newfoundland actually have it as a day of remembrance. On that day the Newfoundland regiment went into battle Beaumont- Hamel WW1. Out of 800 soldiers only 68 showed up for roll call. over 700 men were killed or badly wounded. They basically walked into a blizzard of bullets at the command of the higher ups. It touched every family in Newfoundland and July 1 , Canada Day, they have a memorial at the Cenotaph in Ottawa, Ontario and i imagine definitely in Newfoundland.
So true @RLMARMEN My Newfie granny never celebrated Canada Day & all the families who lost loved 1's on that day in that debacle of a battle. Still hate the deceased Mountbatten who crowed loudly that day calling it a victory when it wasn't. Even I did lose a few relatives in that debacle on that day.
I sometimes wonder what rock JJ came out from under, his condescension is way over the top most of the time. No Name brand is simply a discount store brand and is usually made by one of the leading name brand sources only in a yellow package. No one is snobby enough to judge you on buying it in fact some of the brands are actually better. PC or President's Choice is a brand name chosen by the company president and does denote a generally higher quality item or more specialty as in many flavours and thicknesses of chips. You do not open the entire lid of a can, you open a spot with a can puncher and move the contents to a different vessel or cover the top again. The can is more for long term storage.
J.J.'s videos are not an accurate reflection of Canadian culture and values. He doesn't do any research, and simply relies on his own personal beliefs (which is fine if that's what you're looking for), but his opinions are very shallow and self-serving. Tyler, please look into our Remembrance Day, "Highway of Heroes", and the actual significance of the poppy if you really want to understand the importance of these topics.
Gah! I can’t stand JJ. He is wrong on the symbolism of the poppy. It is FAR more than just showing support to veterans. It’s for the lost lives of our soldiers that fought for our values. Something that desperately needs to be tought again.
@@Veggamattic righteous? Aren’t you judgemental. I love my country. It’s sad to see people keep putting this country down like JJ has. BTW i served this country so you can have your freedom to judge. You say it is self-righteous, i say it dignified and yes, Dying for your values is righteous. Go hate on someone else.
They do the same in the states. Almost every government or government-affiliated building has a portrait of the current Head of State hanging somewhere. The difference is that the queen was our HoS for over half a century, while the US switches theirs out every 4-8 years.
In the USA, I remember the President and Vice President being displayed in the school admin office. In the older school classrooms, there was the same, unfinished portrait of George Washington on the wall.
No Name’s stuff is good. This guy makes a lot of dumb comments in his videos. It’s cheaper and just as good, and nobody would look down in anybody for buying No Name products. Maybe just him.
Yes, I agree, some no name items I prefer the other brands but many or most are just as good. I would think nothing of it if someone had ALL No Name products. Pretty silly to spend more for a product that tastes no better. I think that many wealthy people may have become wealthy because they didn’t worry about “looking well off financially”. I was surprised anyone would think or even mention something along this line. He must be embarrassed to even set foot in a Dollarama then, lol. (I also like Dollarama).
Most often no name/president's choice stuff is the exact same thing as the brand name for a fraction of the price. Don't waste money on brand name only to buy brand name.
Also, No Name's product are the same thing than other large brand product. I once visited a large food factory that were making potato chips, the only difference is the package. Same product that is splitted to two bagging machine with different bags.
Sometimes brand only dictates the price. Hopefully people are smart enough to realize that crushed tomatoes are crushed tomatoes. Unless you need a specific TYPE of tomato, there's not often a need to spend more for the same type of tomatoes!
Tyler "I've never heard of a poppy". Guess he's not paying attention to those Heritage Minutes after all. The poem In Flanders Fields from WW I. It's out national symbol for Rememberance Day (or Patriot's day).
Fun fact about "no name" : As it was explain, it's the "cheap" version of the other product series. But, in reality, for some of these product, no matter "which series" you buy and no matter the price, you actually get the exact same thing : marketing, marketing and marketing! It cheaper to just change the package than also chaning (or adding a new one) the production line/recipies.
That guy in the video is such a snob when it comes to No Name products and other things. I see all walks of life in the stores where No Name products are available (stores owned by Loblaw). It's not for certain classes and there's nothing wrong with the quality of such products. Nowadays, much of these products are made with simple, less ingredients, which I like. That gives me a choice between simple made foods over chemical laden foods.
As a Canadian in my 70’s and have NEVER heard anyone say “aroond” for around no matter how far east I’ve gone. It’s a great exageration of the Canadian accent which has a slight Scottish lilt, especially in Eastern Canada. 🇨🇦
Agreed. I turn them off after 5 mins. because my blood starts to boil. Sadly, Tyler does NOT read comments so no matter how many people state they will turn it off if he reacts to J.J. he will continue to do it.
I honestly started laughing in the first part of this video. I thought this was a troll video as soon as he showed opening a maple syrup can with a can opener instead of a can punch. I have no idea who the poser he is reacting to but he definitely has no understanding of Canada.
Personally, as a Canadian, I'm a big fan of the British Royalty. We gather with coffee every Christmas morning to watch the Christmas address, we stay up all night to watch events like the Coronation, weddings, Jubilee's etc. Also, the poppy is a visual symbol of respect for our troops (specifically WWII) and the sacrifices made. The funds go to good causes and it's one day a year. I would say it's the very least we can do to remember our freedom was free.
Yes, he grew in a rather wealthy household in Vancouver. He even said in this video, although there was a No Frills store near them, his parents would never be caught dead in there with all the poor rif raf. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but that's the jest of his comment. The privilege and elitism oozes from him. He espouses conservative politics, and support of the Conservative Party of Canada, or as I call them, the party of greed.
This guy is terrible. I blocked his channel years ago. I'm not sure where in Canada he is from but most of what he says is not true in western Canada. The poppy is only unknown to Americans. Almost every English speaking country that fought in the world wars wears them november 11. Most of what he says is partially true but he gives me the impression that he makes a lot up as he goes, He is also the only Canadian i have ever heard say aboot instead of about.
I've heard from the comments on other videos that he's from Vancouver.. his accent on the other hand is from some made-up place that doesn't exist. Tyler does NOT read comments so no matter how many of his watchers ask him to stop he will continue to react to this idiot.
Some Canadians really do almost sound like they're saying "aboot," but it's usually East-Coasters (unlike his phoney west-coast ass)... plus their accents tend to affect more than just the one word. 🙄 it's like JJ forgets that there are Canadians on UA-cam too who will call him out
In Québec, it's still very normal to buy a lot of maple syrup cans during the maple season, which is right now! We get like 8-12 cans directly from the surgar shack and it lasts us through the year. Unless you have a bug family brunch, you normally empty the can into a more useful container that you keep in the fridge for a few weeks or a month, until it's empty and then you refill with the next can.
No kidding, cuz I've never heard any Canadian pronounce about like that. I am mid 50's & live in MB. Maybe some areas of Quebec pronounce it like that.
No name is loblaw's generic product line but the other Canadian grocery stores as well as Walmart all have their own generic brand names. They are made by brand name companies but have different packaging for the grocery stores so that they can be sold for a lower price. Smart shoppers buy them to save money.
Proudly wear my poppy every year. They are very lovely metal pins now. Here’s the poem & story. Every Canadian school child from my generation & before can recite and understand the beauty of this work by grade 3. Flanders Fields BY JOHN MCCRAE In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. In Flanders Fields" is a war poem written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. In Flanders Fields was first published on December 8 1915 in the London magazine Punch. Flanders Fields is a common English name of the World War I battlefields in Belgium and France. It is one of the most quoted poems from the war. Its references to the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the world's most recognized memorial symbols for soldiers who have died in conflict. The poem and poppy are prominent Remembrance Day symbols throughout the Commonwealth of Nations, particularly in Canada, where "In Flanders Fields" is one of the nation's best-known literary works. The poem is also widely known in the United States, where it is associated with Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
I have a sugar shack and can of syrup are still very popular, and you dont open the tip of the can, you just put a hole on the top😑 70% of maple syrup in THE WORLD is made in quebec and I see these can everywhere, in supermarket too, the guy need to do more research before making a video, because itmisinform people
Je crois que ce gars n’a jamais mis les pieds dans une érablière de sa vie! Ni qu’il a déjà acheté du sirop d’érable parce que c’est en effet le format le plus courant 😅
There's also a reason why the syrup is better in a can, it has to do with UV exposure I think? Clear glass bottles are bad (don't know if brown glass, like beer, would solve this though) and don't get me started on the plastic jugs. I personally think it gives the syrup a plastic taste, could be me though. I'm a can guy all the way!
This guy saying “a-boooot” like that is equivalent to a cook that’s talking without an accent then out of the blue saying “mooootzarala”. (They are putting it on and it’s gross…. Also this dudes hair…. I know Canadians are known for saying sorry, but, sorry for this guys hair)
1) When I was a kid we had canned maple syrup. You don't open it up like a can of soup. We used an opener similar to what you'd use on a can of apple juice, one that puts a triangular piercing near the rim. Put on in for pouring and one on the other side of the can to make pouring easier. After that you'd just put cellophane over it and put it back in the fridge. If your mother sold Tupperware in the evenings like mine did, they had plastic lids that were specifically fitted for the syrup cans. 2) We are not the only people with portraits of the current monarch in public places. They're all over the commonwealth. 3) With No Name brands, most of the time the only difference is price. With some things you can taste a difference but otherwise, rice is rice. I shop at No Frills, largely b/c it's the grocery store closest to my apartment, and it's just fine.
In Flander’s Fields by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae was a doctor stationed in Flanders. His friend had died and was buried in a makeshift grave. The graves being dug and the shells that had landed activated the poppy seeds in the ground. While visiting his friend’s grave Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae noticed all these poppies in between the graves. He wrote the poem inspired by these poppies. The poem was found in his pocket after his death. Thank you Dr McCrae. I was raised on Air Force Bases. I still recite the poem. My parents were both in the Royal Canadian Air Force. One for 35 years and one for 10. I miss them.
Oh God, most Canadians' least favourite Canadian, JJ again. King Charles (and previously Queen Elizabeth) appears in portraits in government buildings because he is King of Canada, not because he is King of the UK. This is not uniquely Canadian. Similar portraits appear in all 14 of the independent countries of which he is king. Likewise, the poppy is a symbol of honour for lives sacrificed in war, not only in Canada, but throughout the 54 countries of the Commonwealth, and beyond.
Ah yeah, a few people have already mentioned it, but anything that comes out of JJ's mouth is something you should probably double check and/or take with a grain of salt. I don't think I've ever known a Canadian familiar with his stuff that doesn't dislike him to a good degree. He also is really anti-Canadian but expresses it in really subtle ways that non-Canadians might not pick up on - eg his tone of voice when he describes our poppies as geometric, how he says there's lots of social pressure to do it instead of talking about how it's a tradition most of us feel proud to be a part of... Even the fact that rhe talks loke Americans invented the poppy symbol, when rhe lady who campaigned for that symbol to be adopted was inspired by a Canadian poem, and it was the Brits who started selling them first. But he skims iver all that history and context to put us down. I swear JJ is some kind of psy-op plant meant to undermine Canadian culture and history, lol. No Name and President's Choice stuff can be pretty darn good, though, especially for the price. As for the name... I always thought maybe it was the president of the company or something 😆 While he's correct that if you saw someone with tons of No Name foods and not much else, you might wonder if they're trying to save money, absolutely nobody will look down on you for it the way he's implying. Everyone buys that stuff cos it's cheap and usually decent-to-good quality.
The name "President's Choice" refers to the company's president when the product line was introduced, Dave Nichol, who used to appear in their commercials. JJ doesn't know that because he's a poser.
JJ can be so frustrating!!! Anyway, in regards to the poppy, it was mentioned/shown in the Heritage Minute video about John McCrae who wrote the poem In Flanders Fields. Also Canada isn't the only country that has poppies. The UK does too, but theirs are a stiff red paper poppy, with a green plastic center & stick to put through jacket's button hole. While Canada's are like what was shown here. Poppies are also in the film The Wizard of Oz when the characters fall asleep until the snow falls & poppies are the flower used to make opium. So in this context maybe you don't know what a poppy is, but I'd be shocked if someone had never heard of a poppy at all.
FYI... Canada is not 'under the realm of the British Monarchy as a matter of law'. With respect to the law since 1982 we have our own constitution, and the highest 'office' of governance in Canada is now the Governor General of Canada. In the old days (pre-1982) the Governor General reported to the British Monarchy. But now 'Royal Assent' for new bills to be passed into law come from the Governor General. The Queen/King are now considered 'Heads of State' and do not play a direct role in our governance. Most of their previous roles are now done by the Governor General, and their remaining duties include the appointment of a new Governor General at the advice of the Prime Minister.

I am French-Canadian (Québecoise) and I have never seen a portrait of a queen or king in Quebec 😅 (Tyler the majority of Canadians never see this portrait too). “The SACRILEGE” to open a can of maple syrup like this WTF… The can is better for storage and comes out easily in the freezer. I've noticed a few no name items are sometimes better as well.
Never seen a portrait of the Queen anywhere in Québec. My mother, who was born in the 30's, said there was a portrait of the king in some homes when she was a kid.
Dear Lord Tyler, how can you get to adulthood and not know about the poppy? This is why Europeans think that Americans have next to no idea what is going on in the rest of the world. As a Brit living in Canada and a daughter with a Father who flew during the Battle of Britain, my Mother who worked in a munitions factory throughout the world, an Uncle who was on the beaches of Dunkirk and this amazing tribute to the poppy by a Canadian Doctor, I have no words. We owe that generation a gift of gratitude that will never be repaid. Go to France, to the field of crosses, row after row after row and say thank you. It will change you.
Very confused because i know that you have done a whole video on our Remembrance Day holiday. And i know you did one on no name brand stuff. And this guy is a bit of a goof.
I only buy cans. Much more affordable. I open with a triangular can opener and pour it into a plastic liquid container with a handy opening for pouring and store in fridge. lol
Poppies are mainly for Remembrance Day (November 11, when the Armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, on the 11th hour, 11th day of the 11th month). In Canadian schools, all students get these on or near Nov. 11, and schools hold assemblies to remember those who gave their lives for our freedoms. On Nov. 11 at 11 AM local time, everything stops for a minute of remembrance in Canada. I once wore my poppy in Disneyland on Nov. 11th, and both US and Canadian veterans and service people thanked me or gave me a nod, so some Americans know it.
Merchandise without a name, or even with the name of the grocery chain or store chain, comes from major manufacturers, producers or major brands but negotiated in large volume and without having to pay for advertising for these same major brands. The products are of the same quality and from the same production line as the original brands. Sometimes there are products from the previous generation of a product that the manufacturer no longer sells under its original name.
Oh and one more thing about the poppy, one year I know of they had a little stuffed white doggie with red poppies all over it… The poppy puppy . My late husband got me one… the last one they had. They sold out in less than 2 hours that particular day. Yes we live our veterans past and present and I remember them every day. ❤❤❤❤
This Canadian Baby Boomer grew up calling them hockey socks since they were what you needed to keep your feet warm while wearing skates outside in the Canadian winter.
Poppies are just to show you remember (and hopefully be grateful for) soldier’s sacrifices in the Great War and later WW2… hence “remembrance day”. Some places give them out for free (public schools), some ask for any kind of donation; it could be a nickel… I usually give a toonie for a poppy.
The symbolism of the poppy goes way beyond supporting veterans. It's about remembering sacrifice by all who served in conflict, living or dead, military or not, and working toward ensuring their efforts and sacrifice are never forgotten. Poppies are worn in the US - just watch any Canadian NHL team playing in the US between Nov 1 and Nov 11. The coaching staff will all wear poppies. This guy is kinda wierd and his take is not very typical of any Canadians I know, at least here in BC...
I have purchased no name products when I can find them because they are not different and are sometimes better than the top brands. The reason for the lower price appears to be the no frills packaging and promotion. The standard of the packaging of all the products in the same, somewhat off putting yellow, is much less expensive and the savings are passed on to the consumer. No shame in buying these products no matter what JJ says.
When people gripe about feeling pressured into wearing the poppy to honour our dead veterans, everyone within earshot just cringes at the entitled kid's ignorance and disrespect. If he's lucky.
most people buy mapple syrup in a can. the ones in plastic bottles are generally fake syrup and the ones in glass bottles are for tourists and cost way more
I once got a university grant from our legion because my step mom was in the navy and it was funded by poppy sales, so helping vets send their kids to school is one of the many things the funds raised go to!
Canada is part of the British Commonwealth. The queen or rather now, the King is the titular head of state. He has no real governmental powers but does approve bills that are passed by parliament. He also meets with the prime minister every week. The King is actually the titual head of Canada and all Commonwealth nations, but obviously he he resides in England. We have a representative of the crown called the Govenor General. GGs used to be appointed by the Queen, and were British nobilty. In fact, the Stanely Cup, the NHL championship trophy was donated by a GG, Lord Stanley. Now, GGs are appointed by the Prime minister of Canada. The Canadian Football league's championship trophy is called the Grey Cup, again, donated by a GG at the time, Lord Earl Grey, he of the tea fame.
About the British Royalty, at least at my house. We sadly took down our pic of the Queen, which we actually got simply by asking the government entity that provides official Royalty things to us (it was free, too!). But the current king has not earned his stripes yet, so we haven't even asked for his official pic. And as for his wife... we have the Queen's official pic of her husband. But we won't be getting the official pic of the King's wife. I think a LOT of Canadians will agree on that one.
Never open a can of syrup like that unless you want to be seen like a barbarian, you should pop 2 holes on the sides and pour it, you can leave it open for months in a fridge with no danger, or pour it in another container. Also , No Name brand is usually pretty cheap alternatives of more common brands, but most of it is not too bad in terms of quality, especially the dry stuff like spices and such. The chips and other snacks aren't too bad either for the price marks. As for the socks thing, I'm pretty sure it would apply to a lot of winter gear and garments, it's a ''Canadian'' thing mostly because of the weather. You wouldn't wear -40C proof+ coats and gear in most American states, neither would you wear super wooly socks. Finally, the portrait thing is mostly a thing in government institutions and where Canadian patriotism is strong, let's just say it's not really a thing in many provinces, especially Quebec. The poppy is a thing everywhere tho, even if the dude is kind of wrong about the symbolism.
2:12. I’m in Quebec and I’ve never seen someone use anything but the cans. It’s usually cheaper to buy them in cans and you usually put them in a maple syrup dispenser afterwards. 13:17. It basically refers to the president and CEO of Loblaw, so, “his (products) choices”.
There are specific Canadian portraits of the Queen. She is usually shown with a Canadian flag and wearing Canadian orders. There are lots of them because she was Queen for so long.
I'm 59 and I don't recall seeing many queen portraits in the homes of my generation/cousins. I mostly remember seeing them hang on the walls of our aunts and uncles and grandparents. It's funny, I opened my pantry and I see so many no name items! Lol A new poppy pin has come out in the last couple of years. Instead of the stick pin, it clips in the back and you can just replace the stick pin with the pin that closes in the back. The stick pins constantly fall off. I have always lost my old style poppies on the first day of getting them.
Not everything this guy said is right. By the way, the Queen/King IS Canada's monarch too. We are a Constitutional Monarchy here in Canada. I'm not sure about the majority of Canadians being anti-monachist but there probably are more since the Queen's death. Growing up the Queen's portrait was in all government buildings. At school we sang O Canada to open Assemblies and God Save the Queen to close them. (this was a few decades ago for me so I have no idea what they do today). The poppy is worn to remember those who fought and died for our freedom...not to show you're "pro veteran". They are meant to be pinned on on the last Friday in October and worn until Rememberance Day (November 11th). They are also used in memorial or funeral services for our military veterans. As for tinned maple syrop, I have seen it some but in my part of Canada (New Brunswick) mostly it comes in bottles or jugs...either way...YUMMMMM! NO Name...a lower grade of food/products than major brands...and if you go to most Loblaws stores in our area you can find it on shelves along with President's Choice and major brands to. (the president in question would be the president of the Loblaws group) In short I wouldn't take everything this guy had to say...just my opinion. Cheers from New Brunswick, Canada (eh) 🇨🇦
Real wool socks is the warmest thing in winter... the grey, white & red ones are classics. A lot of kids wore them to play hockey. The poppy grew in blood-soaked fields after battles during WWI - a famous Canadian poem was written about them. Poppies are sold by the Canadian Legion to raise funds for veterans. President's Choice refers to the president of the company.
The monarch is the head of state of Canada, so we talk about King Charles III as the King of Canada, because he is. We are supposed to be getting new portraits soon. The poppy is for Remembrance Day on November 11th.

7:35 Most Canadians are indifferent when it comes to the monarchy. JJ is known for being against it, which there a few who really advocate against it in Canada. I myself am pro monarchist which was the norm and a big part of Canadian identity in the past. Most people just don't know much about it or simply don't care either way. Charles III is officially the King of Canada (separate from his title as King of the UK).
I have never associated no name or non-brand as some of us call it would lower class. I always just looked at it as saving some money Why pay for the big expensive brand when I can buy the exact same thing in non-brand. 🤷🏼♀️
It's not! If anything it would be a symbol of not falling for marketing? I tried no name saltines. The brand name was better. No name coco powder? The same.
Poppies are NOT only worn in Canada but in the UK too, and I’m pretty sure the other Commonwealth countries, on Remembrance Day, November 11 to remember all our fallen soldiers and vets.

So true. Even the English dont hang pictures of the queen, king or anyone of royalty. Love maple syrup too and use the can punch to open the can.
The socks have to have that red stripe.
From the UK I am old enough to remember that until some time in the 1980 and the invention of the “ring pull”, this was the only way to open cans containing liquid,e.g. coke, Pepsi etc. As a schoolboy I always had a can puncher on my pen knife tab in my pocket.
Came down here to say the exact same about the cans , opening it like the dude does is very very wrong lol.
There is even a TUpperware for the mapple syrup, after the can is opened
4) Loblaws: President Choice refers to the President of the Company, whoever they currently are
5 ) His accent was overly exagerated an forced.

The creator of the video, JJ McCullough, has a whole series on Canadian objects and the Hudson's Bay blanket is in one of the later videos.
Yes you probably wouldn't see it anywhere else but the last one I saw was at my Grandparent's place
My Mom had one and she has unfortunately passed. This comment made me smile and think of her. ❤
Those blankets are very expensive so it's not likely he would pay to get one just for a video.
They are amazing though.

JJ is wrong on so many levels. Please don’t take him at face value. No name brands are often cheaper, but not always and they are typically very similar if not exactly the same as branded products without the increased price due to brand recognition.

I totally agree!

Nestle cocoa $5.49 - No Name cocoa $3.49 Ironically, both made by Nestle. Brand name rice or no name rice...rice is rice... nuff said!
Right!
Only the arsenic levels in rice can vary. You realize arsenic is an issue with rice, especially from SE USA?

He throws-in a fake accent, too. Notice the way he says 'about' as 'aboot' and tries to make it sound natural instead of an affectation.
He is the king of the douche bags.
@DaveGIS123 yes I noticed that too, it was kind of annoying to be honest.
Ya, his accent isn't one I'm familiar with, other than the make fun version. I've lived in and visited 7 provinces, and not encountered his accent before.
Is Tyler wearing a no name shirt?
The poppy was NOT started by an American. I live in Thunder Bay, where it all started. It was started by a French woman from France. She started it to raise funds for the French veterans and then brought it to France’s allies in 1921. The tradition has been going for over 100 years now.
Never knew it started in thunder Bay my mum came from there
Poppies are a symbol of remembrance for those Canadians lost in WW1 and 11.
There was a World War 11?
thank you for that!
Thank you for letting people know this. I don't think a lot of people outside of Newfoundland know that
Flanders Fields is actually in Belgium, not France
So true @RLMARMEN
My Newfie granny never celebrated Canada Day & all the families who lost loved 1's on that day in that debacle of a battle. Still hate the deceased Mountbatten who crowed loudly that day calling it a victory when it wasn't. Even I did lose a few relatives in that debacle on that day.
Tyler forget JJ. Love you and what you are doing. put that guy is stupid. No more to said, i want to stay polite.
Exactly.
J.J. is just an idiot.

Those Queen Elizabeth portraits were in every school and government office when I was a kid.
And hospitals and sometimes pharmacy’s too I find
They do the same in the states. Almost every government or government-affiliated building has a portrait of the current Head of State hanging somewhere. The difference is that the queen was our HoS for over half a century, while the US switches theirs out every 4-8 years.
I remember the Queen portraits from when I was in Sparks and Brownies as a kid lol.
And our post office. That exact one.
In the USA, I remember the President and Vice President being displayed in the school admin office. In the older school classrooms, there was the same, unfinished portrait of George Washington on the wall.

When this guys says "most of Canadians " take that with a grain of salt . And we wear the poppy as a form of respect . Lest we forget .
No Name’s stuff is good. This guy makes a lot of dumb comments in his videos. It’s cheaper and just as good, and nobody would look down in anybody for buying No Name products. Maybe just him.
Or his comment is subjective :) maybe to him its for poor people :)

He’s from Vancouver and he purposely plays up the accent
Some Canadians really do almost sound like they're saying "aboot," but it's usually East-Coasters (unlike his phoney west-coast ass)... plus their accents tend to affect more than just the one word. 🙄 it's like JJ forgets that there are Canadians on UA-cam too who will call him out
In Québec, it's still very normal to buy a lot of maple syrup cans during the maple season, which is right now! We get like 8-12 cans directly from the surgar shack and it lasts us through the year.

For the Queen photo, it's not for the Quebec, but more for the rest of Canada.
Neither some parts of BC.
JJ doesn't do a very good job on his research. i.e. poppies are not sold. You give a donation of any amount.

About no name products - my husband used to work for Colgate, who made things like soap, deoderant, detergent etc. He was on a line one day, filling up javax bottles (bleach) and once the javax brand name bottles ran through, the next bottles were no name. so alot of times the no name is actually brand name, put into a yellow package and sold cheaper.
I am starting to suspect that Tyler is an AI and he is just saying what we have want to hear!
btw, Tyler, is that a no-name t-shirt you're wearing?
The advantage of sleeping on a maple can pillow is that you'll have SWEET dreams.
I only buy cans. Much more affordable. I open with a triangular can opener and pour it into a plastic liquid container with a handy opening for pouring and store in fridge. lol
And easier to stock up cans when you find them at 5$ a can instead of 9-10$. Fancy shaped bottles are cute, buy don't stack and are expensive.
14:26 you'd have the best camouflage in a no name store with that t-shirt.😅
Merchandise without a name, or even with the name of the grocery chain or store chain, comes from major manufacturers, producers or major brands but negotiated in large volume and without having to pay for advertising for these same major brands. The products are of the same quality and from the same production line as the original brands. Sometimes there are products from the previous generation of a product that the manufacturer no longer sells under its original name.
No more JJ videos lol he’s so annoying
and Tyler is fine?
JJ is irritating. Sorry, eh?
If he's lucky.
most people buy mapple syrup in a can. the ones in plastic bottles are generally fake syrup and the ones in glass bottles are for tourists and cost way more
All one needs to do is buy syriup in a fancy bottle for the first time & when used up, wash & re-fill from the can with a small funnel.
14:50 JJ is a snob. Most folks don’t care that much. It’s more a meme to the rest of us, like buying a No Name barbecue lighter or duffel bag
Can't stand the way JJ says "Aboot" so annoying
He pronounces it differently at different times. I'm pretty sure it's an affectation.
I'm not sure why JJ thinks having a portrait of the head of state on the wall, especially if it's a government building, should be considered strange.
Canned maple syrup is still by far the most common way to store it
I have lived in Canada my whole life. (almost 50 years) i have never seen a can of maple syrup. Must be an eastern thing.
I've never bought anything else than cans... (except for fake one.... Yeah I know : I'm a disgrace... but University student budget :( )
@@shawnwharry952probably
In Quebec it's still how it's sold in grocery stores
Quebecers are better than inferior english canadians😂 joke. But yeh... we buy 99% in cans.
You can buy it that why in some shops in Prince Edward Island
I am an Australian and we have poppies, portraits of the Queen and no name brands.
I once got a university grant from our legion because my step mom was in the navy and it was funded by poppy sales, so helping vets send their kids to school is one of the many things the funds raised go to!
No Name is a no frills type of product. The items are usually pretty good but it is almost always cheaper than brand name.
Re: No name products, they have greatly improved in quality over the years and pretty much every shopper will have some favourites.
It's the president of the company's choice. Presidents are kind of like CEOs which we also have.
I have always lost my old style poppies on the first day of getting them.
not knowing a poppy is crazy
The British also wear a poppy in remembrance.
@@bhalliwell739 that’s because the british know what’s up
Have you never seen Wizard of Oz and the poppie field. Or know where Herion and Opium comes from?
Even for Americans.
The wearing of the poppy is only a British and Commonwealth thing and not known or done in other countries.
(the president in question would be the president of the Loblaws group)
In short I wouldn't take everything this guy had to say...just my opinion.
Cheers from New Brunswick, Canada (eh) 🇨🇦
I wear those socks but I didn't know that they were very Canadian.
Speak for yourself. My Canada has no monarch.
@@shawnwharry952 I was trying to give an accurate state of affairs in Canada - he is the head of state. You can be anti-monarchist but it doesn't change the legal standing of King Charles in Canada.
@@shawnwharry952 Prime minister is a monarch but without any credibility.
@@gledatelj1979 WTF?? Our P.M. is our country's leading political party's representative. What many citizens fail to understand, is that it is not J. Trudeau with whom they should be upset with, but the party to which he belongs, as it is THAT party supporting his positions and choices. Too many people want to kill the messenger, however, the messenger is merely the one with the loudest mouth... The puppet, if you prefer. Trudeau was VOTED into his position by Canadian citizens. He didn't become P.M. through heredity. That said, please, explain your comment...
Pretty much everyone feels this way except kids who don't understand the concept of manufacturing processes being the same.
