Man the Austrian painter loved Asian symbols so much that when he grew he used them in his masterpiece.
While nowadays being mainly used in Asian cultures, it was used all over the world, some painting and engraving of the 8th century northern Europe do contain the symbol. Which is where "aryan" people are supposed to come from. My guess is that's where the angry painter got it from.
@ There are videos on youtube where someone goes to Asia an ask people in different countries what the swastika means and they either don't know or it meas good things. Still, I expected to mention at least the Korean War. Because this is the first U.N. military intervention and the beginning of the Cold War.

In summary, it was influential in the Middle Ages, but it lost its influence in modern period when the world influenced it, and began to appear in the Cold War.
