- Open source software is created and maintained by users. It can be tweaked, added to and improved by anyone. And best of all, it’s free!
Open source has been instrumental in modern computing, from the development of browsers to media players to operating systems, and its value grows with every passing day as the community around it share their skills, knowledge and passion for the benefit of everybody else.
So, what is open source, how does it work and is it safe?
Find out in this explainer video from iluli by Mike Lamb - explaining the ideas and innovations changing our lives.

Unfortunately, open source isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. ( Ex: github.com/zloirock/core-js/issues/548 )
The author of corejs (which has 17M weekly downloads on npm) added a postinstall msg because he was looking for a job (he’s been maintaining the lib for years in his own spare time) and basically some very entitled people got mad because it was cluttering up their logs (just turn it off or filter it out if it’s that annoying ugh).
The guy who opened the issue is major jerk. You are using a software that’s FREE and yet have the audacity to complain just because of a minor inconvenience.
Unfortunately, this is pretty common occurrence for every major OSS project. The community lacks compassion and take tools that they use for free (and depend on) for granted and when something breaks, they get mad and harass the maintainers.
Lots and lots of sad and frustrating stories/exps like this plague the oss community.
*Did you just Rick Roll me?*
🤷🏻♂️
If you start with "did" then you don't need a past tense verb, so you can simply say "Did you just Rick Roll me?"
Yeah.
@@Kaillyne _thanks, that actually really helps :D_
@@Rabbotic I'm a grammar nazi it's what I do ;)

For me.
This channel animation is very good
A lot of times open source companies struggle to maintain their code because of lack of resources and lack of funding to hire resources. In the past I've heard even frameworks like Django struggling to hire a single full time employee (not sure about its authenticity), so open source companies either move to support or added functionality for fee. Now this gave rise to open source as a marketing strategy for profit organizations. What are your thoughts on that 🤔
wait sharing=caring
Caring=sharing
Remember that the majority of Web servers run Linux and if you are viewing this on an Android phone, then, that is open source. Some of the commonly used open-source software are KVM [Kernel Virtualization Module] (open-source counterpart of VMWare vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V), LibreOffice (open-source counterpart of Microsoft Office), Blender (open-source counterpart of Autodesk Maya), GIMP (open-source counterpart of Adobe Photoshop), Kdenlive [Linux only] and OpenShot (open-source counterparts of Adobe Premiere).
as long as you don't put ads into my brain, than I am in. XD
I thought open source meant the code was public, not that everyone can edit it like a wikipedia page
The best ad ever thanks a lot (:
