  • ZINKA MILANOV Verdi-Boito OTELLO Era più calmo...Mia madre aveva una povera ancella...Ave Maria, with Rosalind Elias mezzo-soprano, RCA Victor Orchestra conducted by Arturo Basile [25 September 1958], first issued on LM/LSC 2303. Soprano Zinka Milanov (1906-1989) sang Desdemona for the first time on 1 July 1941 in Buenos Aires. Her initial performance of the role at the Metropolitan Opera was on 17 March 1958. When RCA recorded this fourth act scena complete in stereo later that year, it was the artist's final recording for the company. She last performed the role at the Metropolitan on 15 April 1965. Mme Milanov made her final appearances there during April 1966, as Maddalena in Andrea Chénier on the 13th, and on the 16th in the Farewell Gala which closed the old house at Broadway and 39th Street.

My first opera was 21 November, 1964 at the Metropolitan Opera. It was a matinee performance of Otello with Zinka MIlanov as Desdemona, Dimiter Uzunov as Otello and Cornell MacNeil as Iago.

She was the last of the great larger than life Prima Donnas! She had the voice to justify her standing! The most beautiful Ave Maria ever!

Of all of her operas, this is the one I most wish I could listen to in its entirety.

She sounds very good in her live performance of. Tosca at. Covent. Garden with. Corelli. From 1957,when she was 51 years old. For me sounds
Much better in this live performance of. Tosca than in her commercial record with. Jussi. Bjiorling, the same year.

I would concur that after her studio AIDA Milanov might have considered putting end of her STUDIO recording although she, I feel, still had much to offer (a TOSCA with Corelli from Covent Garden 1957 still has some fine moments from her) despite the fact that her VERY best days were behind her. Pitch problems & strident forte high notes occur sometimes in her last public performances but there is still much to cherish, her RUSALKA aria from 1958 for example. Also surprisingly the VERDI Requiem from 1940 sounds tentative at times especially in the LIBERA ME section whereas I would always play FIRST, for someone who had never heard her, the recording she made of the 4th act TROVATORE aria from around 1951. The years 1951 to around 1955 were really vocally among her greatest & there is much evidence, LIVE & in the STUDIO to support this opinion although even during this period sometimes in LIVE performances her vocalism could be inconsistent. Apparently her NORMA broadcast during this time is an example of this. However her NORMA broadcasts from 10 years before this offer some of her finest singing. The second from December 1944 especially is the one to have if still available so I am told & I am lucky to have it.

      Hi.
I recorded the two videos in February 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in

Wonderful spinto voice. Gorgeous tone. She is Brazilian. Like a Rolls Royce. She graduated in 2016 from a Brazilian music school. There are issues with her loose vibrato. She is currently in Provo, Utah studying for her master's degree in vocal performance at Brigham Young University. Tatiana is around 26/27 years old.

Milanov best voice years were since 1937 up to 1946. (In her 1953 New Orleans Forza del destino there are high notes that are clear in color and "fissi" and flat as well. In her 1953 and 1954 Aida broadcasts she has to hurry in time for the C in O cielli azurri, and she cuts the note quickly)

Milanov needed a partner like Jussi Björling to really get airborne. Both reach that wonderful duo-sound, call it something special floating. The best description of her uniqueness : here below from Dragan Milunovic. Her spaciousness was not easy to register. Such a pity as it leaves a lot away.Strange that in the remastered recording from Verdi's Requiem-1938, conductor Toscanini and excellent chorus and orchestra, you get some feelings of her greatness in the specialty.

Although many of Madame Milanov's records give an excellent account of her beautiful singing, I have yet to hear one that reproduces the amplitude of her voice as I heard it within the space of an opera house. It was a miracle to hear!

Having heard Milanov live 1953-1966, her voice had an amplitude that needed the space of a theatre in which to be heard at full impact. Very difficult to capture in a recording.

Rosanna Carteri was born in 1930. Zinka Milanov in 1906 so there is a quarter century difference in their ages.

Terrible acting - not as good as Hilde Konetzni, Elisabeth Rethberg, Nellie Melba, and Rosa Ponselle.
