She was VERY GOOD in this. COMPLETELY underrated as an actress. She's been in bad movies, but so has EVERY actor. If she's up against Keitel, and holds her own, she can act.
@@ilovetati91 She's been good multiple times in movies. Just depends on what it is. For me, Shanghai Surprise, Body of Evidence & Swept Away are her three worst -- literally ALL UNWATCHABLE. Everything else was ok -- (Who's That Girl?, Dick Tracy, A League of Their Own, Six Rooms, Next Best Thing) or at the very least, entertaining. Desperately Seeking Susan, Evita & Dangerous Game are for me her three best film performances -- INFINITELY watchable.
She's uneven, as an actress, I would say. She was good in this, but you have to up your acting game playing opposite Keitel, or you'll go down in flames. Abel Ferrara got a good performance out of her in this, and that's what leads me to say she's uneven. Simply BECAUSE she has to be directed well to get the performance out of her, (this, Evita, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Shadows & Fog) versus just her playing versions of herself over and over again (Desperately Seeking Susan, Who's that Girl? Dick Tracy) as good examples of that. She's REALLY good when she's good, and TERRIBLE when she's not. There's no 'middle ground' when it comes to Madonna.
@@tillyboos but she’s good in all of the roles you mention. Madonna has been good more than she’s been bad. The assessment of her as an actress is uneven, biased and revisionist. Madonna has more decent films than a vast majority of actresses, and that wasn’t even her primary avenue. With hindsight, I feel her filmography is an integral part of her myth and her accomplishments.
@@solarflaresoftruth I don't think so. She's had some wonderful performances and some TOTAL stinkers as an actress. That's why I say uneven. I love Madonna, but you have to admit, some things, (like Shanghai Surprise, Who's that Girl and even Body of Evidence are nearly unwatchable). And even then, it's subjective right? Due to the fact that you might love her performance in something that I find hideous. It is what it is. I still say uneven.
Dennis Harvey I think mostly because Ferrara encouraged the actors to improvise, to naturalize the dialogue and say things how normal people would say it. He ended up only using off those extemporaneous, off the cuff lines, shootage from rehearsals or one take shots. Everyone involved except Madonna apparently realized the script of a strong surviving female character would never be used and that the entire process of filming was more a biography of her life than about the story itself. So she was practically hysterical when the movie came out because the humanity of the character that came through hit a little too close to home. Still probably his best effort, though, and I hope she realizes that now despite trashing it at the time.
Loo Eli Actually the reason she trashed it is because, as he publicly admitted, her part was drastically cut--in the editing process Ferrara decided the relationship between the two men was the real core of the story, so despite being enthused about Madonna's performance, he cut her scenes to the bone. So understandably she was upset that a lot of her work was lost in the final film.
Dennis Harvey I don't know how much was cut honestly just that it didn't make the kind of feminist statement that she expected. Although there are actually Madonna fans who turn off the second half because the story is more concentrated on Eddie and his wife. Which is insane. Her three or four scenes after the rape sequence are some of the more brilliant of the film. The whole movie has some of the best acting I've ever seen in my life.
+Dennis Harvey I think Madonna can never be convincing as an actress, because she is too much of a character herself. Her face, her voice... everything about her is too 'shaped' to be an actress. And why should she be an actress? She already is who she is. She doesn't have to become more or less.
One of the few good jobs she did at ACTING. I loved her in a number of movies, not because of her acting but just because her mere presence was great. But in this one she did a good job.
Martin Scorsese wanted to cast her in Goodfellas...n then Casino...maybe he the only big director in Hollywood that know Madonna potential as an actress..wish she will act again..with this kind of heavy role
She's been a little "uneven" as an actress, but when she gets it right, like here or in Desperately Seeking Susan, League of Their Own or at her ABSOLUTE BEST in Evita, she REALLY shines. I think EVERY actor has done some bad films though.
This is the only movie she ever did real acting. The first time I saw it I didn't realize it was her for the first few minutes. I seem to remember she wasn't happy about it and didn't like Abel Ferrara at all.
She did a good job in this movie. It was no masterpiece but if it had been an unknown actress critics would have talked her up and said she had a bright future in the biz but being it was "Madonna" no-one took any notice. Read somewhere she kinda helped bury the movie anyhow. Can only imagine some of the shit that went on in that set though. Yeuch!!!
Oddly Even At the end of the day Madonna isn't really an actress but the film is proof that any director that won't take crap from her and forces her to face her demons can pull out a phenomenal performance.
The director admitted he and everyone else personally bullied and abused her until he managed to (temporarily) destroy her self obsession and huge ego enough to get a performance out of her. She hated him for it and swore she would never work with him again. Her massive ego gets on the way of every movies she made except this one. She is so narcissistic that she cannot let go of herself long enough to play a character. She is so obsessed with "being Madonna" that she can't do anything else.
abel ferrara. welcome to new york. anyone who worked with zoe lund i dig. but abel ferrara, he's just a whole different sorta human being. that dark part inside you, inside us all, he makes it sacred and makes you almost proud that it's there in you. i say dark so you know what im talking about. but it's not dark. it's just an aspect of your persona. and i acknowledge it and even exercise it like i do the rest of my person.
Her best work turns out to be the least seen. In my opinion I feel that Ferrarra bullied a performance out of her - really She is effective here, definitely.
It’s her voice. She’s also thinking about everything she’s saying, and trying to make it sound a certain way. There are people that act in this called the Berthold Brechtian style. Aka you know they’re acting and can I be very entertaining but that’s not what this is. But again, it’s really the tone of her voice. It’s a really insincere tone and it isn’t comical or dimensional either. Her best and only watchable film is EVITA because she had no dialogue
Both Claire and Sarah are SO passive. I was rooting for Madonna's character(s) to snap out and take control over those mysogynists around her but that never happens. Nothing but abuse towards women is depicted in this movie. Abel Ferrara is a freak.
You seem to be the one commenter who believes this. Everyone else is raving about how good she is. The movie is creepy AF but she is really good here. I happen to think she’s done other good work, but often she’s typecast or given a role similar to her ‘Madonna’ public persona.
